View Full Version : Odd Phase of Olden RPG's...

Hey! Lately I am going through the weirdest phase, ever. I didn't start playing MMO's until WoW Vanilla, so obviously I'm going to be lost, but that's half the fun I suppose. I have been playing some of the older RPG's as of late and even a few tabletops and so far I'm highly enjoying the experience.
Hopefully, I can enjoy this one just as much. Just wanted to drop by and let myself be known.

Pretty much on the money x3
Little bit of Pathfinder as well, but if my friend is right they should have an older version before 3.5 around somewhere.
Hounded down FF6, but so far no luck on getting my SNES to be nice .-.
But yeah, should be fun! Contemplating on either rolling Bard or Paladin.

Let us know in server chat if you need pointers :D EQ doesn't hold your hand the way WoW-->thereafter does...
And this is probably off-topic, but a fun topic...Try gemstone 3/4 (http://play.net/Gs4) if you're up for a text-based mmo. That MUD rocked. I'd still play it if i wasn't so stingy about paying 14.99 a month when I wouldn't play it that much...It used to sport 2000-2500 people at peak. Like P99, it's usually more like 200-600 nowadays. The combat system is actually really elaborate for a text-based game, complete with death crits, monster invastions of the main city, etc...
But for now i'll stick to my once-or-twice-a-week p99 playtime...

I really loved that game too. So much, in fact, that I wrote a clone of it and ran it locally for a couple of years.

My guess is you've already bailed on your olden RPG quest and have decided to spend all of your time playing EQ.
Good choice :)

If anyone made a GSIV clone F2P I'd be all over that.

SSI's Pool of Radiance. Came out in 1988 or 1989. It was one of the Gold Box games and it had a sequel or two. There was also a Dragonlance game that used the same model. Old D&D 2nd Edition stuff!

Really no ultima underworld?!?! Thats what started the 3d RPG and set the game standards that even EQ used. If you want a true throwback to the mmo world play some underworld.

My wife and I played the original Baldur's Gate on an ad-hoc network. We each controlled 3 characters... such fun. Before I met her I was a veteran of Phantasie II and Pool of Radiance et. al.
Get me out of this hell... hole...
And then I kicked him in the head 'til he was dead! Hahaha!

I played a bunch of those gold box games or advanced dungeons and dragons as they were called. I was hooked two minutes into the game and haven't stopped playing(this genre) since.
I played ultima 5 through 9 and underworld. EQ was my first MMO and for some reason, my favorite still.

You and I are the only 2 people in the world who prefer ff8 over ff7. Rinoa Heartilly & Squall Lionheart for life, yo.

I've seen a few folks find p99 who never played in live EverQuest. I say the same thing to all of you: I am so jealous that all of this will be new content for you!
Welcome to the heap. Be aware, EQ as it was (and mostly is on this server) is more unforgiving than most games you will have played. It's not super hard, but it's not going to hold your hand and lead you to the next quest hub.
There's SO much content for completely new eyes... ah... again I must say I'm jealous of your clean slate.
Make sure and enjoy it! It's magic the very first time around =)

Oh and related to Final Fantasy...
I preferred FFIX to both VII and VIII. It had better characters and a feeling of whimsy akin to the Tales series.
Of course, my favorite FF title, and my favorite console game of all time: Final Fantasy Tactics!
EverQuest and FFT showed up side by side in Game Informer's best 200 games of all time list a few years back. 43 and 44 I think. =) My two favorite games right next to one another.

I really enjoyed BoF 3, I'll have to scrounge up an emulator for 2 and check 'er out.

Revenant was a good RPG. It was for computer. Not terribly old. But a great game for sure. Think it was 1998-2000 release somewhere in there.

It has a weird (but ok) storyline, the combat system is fun, and there's some interesting side-quests you can play with. Definitely worth a play.
Not quite snes era but Vandal hearts and Final fantasy tactics were both pretty satisfying

zelda: link to the past. one of the best in the series imo, behind ocarina.
final fantasy II (IV). the earlier version was pretty hardm can't compare the playstation/gba/ds versions to the snes version.
secret of evermore didn't grab my interest the same way mana did. i don't think they're related, other than by similarity of titles.

i mean with smb you kind of already know the jist of what is going on. princess is getting "kidnapped" even tho i'm pretty sure the slut wants it from bowser (which is a pretty stand-up guy, if you cut through all the propaganda), mario wants her princess vagina, and luigi wants to steal her away and get seconds like a sissy.
it was an ok game from what i remember, just not quite on the same level story wise.

I just remember reading the Player's Handbook back in 1980. I was hooked then and dice rolling as often as I could. I was in the Army over in Okinawa a few years later when another Monster Manual came out. I think it was MMII. I was going back to the states on leave and had $150 for 10 copies of the book from the group. I ended up throwing out most of the civilian clothes I had in my bag when I went back to make room for all the books, dice, and figures.

Yeah I think that might have been the RPG that opened the doors for me. Just checked and it came out in 96' so I don't feel all that bad for being excited about mario lore, I was like 11

Here is a definitive list of the best RPG's:
1. Earthbound.
Good game, but...No sequels or anything. Really unsatisfying to have a good game be in total isolation and never see any expansion of scope.
Plus EB is one of those single-track RPGs. Very little replay value once you beat it 2x. Lots of easter eggs, but again - it's all single-track.

It has a sequel called Mother 3 (or Earthbound 2; it's only been released in Japan but there's a fan translation that's very good). It also has a prequel named Mother (or Earthbound zero) that's also never been released, but has an official English translation.

I haven't played much of Mother/Earthbound Zero but my impression is that it has serious balance issues, isn't very fun gameplay-wise, but has good story/dialogue. I've played Mother 3 and I'd say it's almost as good as Earthbound.
