Was also more people playing on blue at the time.

This is a pretty inane statement. Plenty of people run stuff like this without making money because they have other enjoyment they receive from it. My bet is it's probably close to break-even or maybe a tiny bit more - but nothing even close to a real business.

Because as soon as they take R99 down, the Vz-Tz dudes will start screaming about how "if there was only another stable box, then everyone would play and it would dwarf blue 99 and it would be awesome" or some other nonsense.

R99 basically proves that no, not that many people are interested in EQ PvP, and for good reason. As long as it stands, they shut their stupid mouths and don't run around ruining our forums like they did a short time after the last VZTZ collapsed.

While I agree that the "It's free to play so we should have no expectations" crap is a terrible excuse and people should stop using it, to assume this project is profitable enough to be a business is absurd.

First off I'm pretty sure that Rogean hosts more servers than just P99/R99. I believe PEQ is also hosted by Rogean. When I was a GM on BoTA I know he offered to host that server for Akk as well. There's likely others. Then there's the login server as a whole which I believe he has a part, if not the primary role, in hosting. This forum/site. The EQEmu forum/wiki etc (I believe he also hosts. If not KLS does). etc etc etc

People forget there's a lot more being paid for than P99/R99. Yes there are ass tons of people here that donate. Some that feel compelled to do it almost weekly/monthly. I donated as well a couple times back when I was on PEQ, when I was more financially stable irl. I can't speak for the project's finances, but I'd venture a guess that even with all that plus adsense etc I highly doubt the server/project is making any profit at all. At absolute best it's breaking even.

#1. The underlying cause of the crashes over the past month or so has been corrected, we believe. It is important to us.

#2. If 500 players are using something, there is a greater chance a problem will occur than when 25 players use it. Make sense?

You are ridiculously wrong. Donations barely cover the hosting costs.. and I mean barely. Lots more people used to donate than do now. You would think having two servers would have increased the amount of people who would donate, but that assumption would be wrong.

Also, knowing that I don't make any money from doing this, it's quite offensive to hear someone like yourself say you're tired of hearing the 'it's free' excuse. You see, I get paid to develop things irl, so I know this is fucking free. Else, you would be paying our developer salaries from your subscription fee. You aren't required to pay anything, so it is free.

Pretty much this. I can't speak for all members of the staff, but I 'donate' a portion of my RL time every day recreating classic everquest just so it will exist somewhere. I have spent a ridiculous amount of time and would destroy everyone at Everquest trivia :P

As I have stated in the past, the excess donations go towards future payments for hosting.

If something happened where donations no longer reached the necessary amount for hosting, Rogean and I would cover costs for the server, but I don't know for how long. He might feel differently than myself, but I'm not keen on working for free and paying rent for random people to complain for no reason.

Personally, Nilbog, I don't know why these threads endure. You don't have to explain yourself to people like this. Anyone remotely smart and grateful knows what you guys do for all the players here. I know it gets your goat when people say you guys make money hand over fist doing this and aren't doing shit for the players, but I think the forums and the server as a whole would benefit tremendously if these threads were deleted and these idiots who complain weren't given a voice.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. This post is ridiculous. I only just started playing two weeks ago, and I have yet to donate. But I will be donating what I can when I can. If there was a product like this that I had to pay for...I would. Because I enjoy this. If you don't enjoy this, don't play it. Others however do. And are greatly appreciative of the time that is spent keeping the servers up and operational.

Takes a lot of nerve to get something for free and complain about it.

Even if these Devs made money hand over fist, which I am sure they don't. Would it matter? If the product was free to you and they made a ton of money it still doesn't take away the fact that the game is free, and you don't have to pay for it.

I sure hope none of the developers take offense to this too greatly. I'm sure this guy is completely in the minority. And to say you can't keep using the excuse that it's free...yes you can. Because the game remains free. As long as it's free and as long as you don't have to pay for it you can use that excuse as long as you like.
