It was obviously a joke, seeing as it would have been quite easy to align the numbers correctly making it much more convincing, had he intended to truly fool anyone.

Don't worry Brut. As an Ogre it's already as if you were wearing the shield, but it doesn't take up an armour slot.

Dwarves get pretty screwed on occasion too. Can't wear the Hero bracer, can't wear Powered Gauntlets, can't even wear the infamous Tree Weave of Kunark era.
I always thought it was because Dwarves had an innately high STR, but I notice Barbarians can wear pretty much all the things Dwarves can't. Quite confusing.
