I used to do this all the time. I don't know if SOE ever fixed it as I stopped playing around when EQ2/WoW came out.

Yuppers, viable technique. Bards are a handful in PVP :)

I think it got fixed at some point, can't remember when.

It was one of the perks of being a high elf mage on a PvP server, most bards couldn't poof your pet (racial teams).
