View Full Version : Night-time brightness

I was on temporary hiatus from P1999 and its forums for most of the past year, but recently I read a thread suggesting/hinting that the P1999 developers may have begun working on and/or discovered a way to eliminate the artificial brightness that EQ Titanium provides at night-time. Can someone provide a link to such discussion if it in fact exists? I for one (as someone who plays Human characters, no less) would vastly prefer properly dark nights if it's at all possible. Of course I may have mis-interpreted the comment I read as well.

Oh yeah, it's a really simple fix. Just kill your gamma correction, then turn your monitor off. That aligns the settings to a more classic set.

Heh, funny. It wasn't really that bad though except in a few areas where light sources didn't work right.

I distinctly remember rolling an erudite, getting lost in toxx forest. After about 15 mins of what i thoought was wandering, i was informed by some druid passing by that i was running headlong into a tree lol

lol, that's awesome. But yes, turn your gamma down or off and that should correct the night.

I really think the problem with night blindness can be attributed to Video Cards and Monitors and possibly newer version of Direct X
I may in 1999 and early 2000s Most monitors and Video cards did not handle Gamma correction properly (the way they do now). Not to mention the cheapest video cards are at least as powerful as the most powerful cards from back then, with better drivers and software to run 3d acceleration. The same can be said of monitors (back then 1024x768 was pretty much the best resolution you'd see) and most of these tube monitors did not even come close to the flat panel high resolution monitors even the cheapest lap tops use.
I remember running around on my old 17inch CRT with a voodoo 2 video card and as a halflign everything was dark, i could only see the glow of the firebugs in misty thicket. I would bet if I loaded eq onto that old rig again it'd look the same (if it could even run the game now days). I may be wrong, I have not looked at the code, but I do not think there was much wizardry done with the gamma correction. Maybe Direct X of today is better at translating it, but it's probably a combination of Direct X, your elite monitors and video cards (relative to 2000ish hardware) that is responsible for the lack of "night blindness"
In other words I do not think it's a problem that can be fixed, or maybe they could force everyone's gamma slider down super low which opens another bag of problems itself.

Thanks Webrunner, that's the sort of commentary I was looking for. Thread purpose can be considered achieved.
The Titanium client has a sort of auto-brightening ultravision-like effect that kicks in outdoor zones when night falls. I also notice that if I log in at night, the world'll be dark for a couple of ticks until the game pops the brightener on. That's a client feature and has nothing to do with overall gamma settings.
You're quite mistaken Knotty. The Titanium client is a late 2005 era WoW-influenced version; the brighter night is directly a result of that influence. Remember this was the period when Sony's flagship was suffering mass exodus and the owners were desperate to try anything to stem the avalanche. This client wouldn't look the same on your old PC as the original game clients. I still use a CRT, for that matter, because LCD screens give me migraines.

The only person that's gotten close to achieving this goal is Secrets.
I did something similar to this by hijacking dynamic lighting. Lighting used to be static, so by forcing all lighting to be one value, you'd fix this.
Unfortunately I never looked into it past disabling lighting entirely, but I am fairly certain it's possible to do.

I did not know that the Titanim client was adjusting brightness, that's pretty neat find, if true it will probably be fixed eventually.
