View Full Version : Warrior Race Question

Hey guys, I was talking to someone on Red in game the other day casually, and when they found out that I played a Human Warrior they pretty much told me that Humans were the 2nd worst warriors in the game and that due to the lack of the slam ability in PvP and inferior stats to all the other races, and that the only worse race are Dark Elves. So pretty much my decision choice was narrowed down to just delete my character and roll an Ogre, even though kick causes a stun effect at level 55 in Kunark.
So basically, for times when my friends aren't on Red I decided to re-roll a Warrior on blue and start over from scratch.
Now here's the twist. I am a big under dog kind of guy and I always like to take the less chosen paths in life and I don't really like to follow the crowd. So I kinda looked at it like a challenge (since he claimed that even in PvE they are not that good), I enjoy when things aren't easy and I think adversity adds to the feeling of accomplishment you get out of a game when you do something that others deem to be hard to do or that you shouldn't do. So basically I want to play a Human warrior and try to prove that any race with enough skill and decent gear can tank at the high end. But at the same time I remembered him mentioning that Dark Elves were even worse than Humans. So that leads me to my final question.
Should I make a Human or a Dark Elf?
I expect to get trolled and have a lot of people will just post a few words and just say "play a large race." but I believe that each player should choose what appeals to them and their play style no matter how weird or different that play style is. Even though I don't actually RP in game I care about things like what deity my character chooses, even though nobody else may care at all. Anyway, just these forums would be a good place to bring this up since I don't have any RL friends that play Everquest to talk to about it, not to mention everyone in my Skype group plays other games. So thanks for reading my post guys and you all have a great day / evening.

Consider trying an Iksar warrior. Their stats are roughly in line with gnomes, which you suggested in the post above, and are the only tanking class that can't currently wear plate armor. If that's not enough of a challenge for you, consider the fact that you're forced to worship Cazic-Thule and are KOS in nearly every city in the game, have virtually no mobility, and will be expected to pull aggro off of Ragebringer rogues for the first 45 levels of your already difficult existence.

dark elfs look way more badass than humans
edit: iksar is kinda a cool choice too, because velious will reward you a bit for your effort before. Vellious iksars get access to good armor finally and they still get the regen and ac bonus.

Play whichever one sounds the coolest in your head. You know - roleplaying!
Don't let the min/maxxers get you down. Skill always trumps stats. I bet an evil Human warrior could up the difficulty a little bit, plus it's probably rather rare.

All your suggestions sound really cool and Broot you got the idea, I would be the only Human Warrior that follows Bertoxxulous. RP is so under rated and almost nobody cares about their characters background or their origin anymore. Well I guess I am one of the ones that do. Now before anyone flames me and says "This isn't Live." I just wanted to point out that for a long time while I was playing on Live the top Warrior in game cross server was a Dark Elf. Once again, I know Classic and Live are two totally different games completely, but I found it kind of ironic that the so called "worst" warrior in Classic, The Dark Elf, was the best of the best on Live.
Also funny fact, I heard that Sword and Board is now the preferred tanking setup for end game tanks on Live these days. I guess there's not much difference between WoW and EQ Live anymore. :b

Trouble is on this server there will probably never be any AA's. And that tends to level out toons on live. On here a Ogre Warrior has a ton more Str and Sta than a human. Let alone the frontal stun resist. No other race is going to have more AC and HP than a Ogre equally equipted. So you are not going to be the Main tank I don't give a crap what anyone says unless you are the Guild Leader and it is his or her toon.
But like a lot of people say play what you want to play. It is your toon, pick what you want, but don't make is sound like you will be the top dog as a DE or Human. All the top end guilds have the same gear on the top people. On a raid if the Main Tank dies it is a wipe. I am not going to Bat Phone 40 peeps to have a lesser Tank be there. Ain't happening.

For my money, Dark Elf or Wood Elf for racial hide. You will be amazed at how useful that can be, especially when you are a class with zero utility like a warrior. And they are both badass looking in plate. And they are both the perfect size and camera view for tanking for me....I always feel like I'm meleeing with one of my shamans when I try to play a large race tank. I always percieve being evil as more of a challenge, so for you a Dark Elf would be my reccomendation.
By the way, despite what the minmaxxers will say, every race class combo is entirely viable. Your choice may limit what you can do on the high end, but warriors are no exception. You likely won't be a main tank for raids, but not every ogre in your guild will be either. If you don't plan to raid I wouldn't sweat race at all. Wouldn't sweat it anyway.
I respect the hell out of your approach. minmax on red....you need every possible edge there. on blue, have fun and play whatever appeals to you.

If you want to be a group tank, try a shadowknight, paladin, or monk instead. All three of these classes have gigantic advantages over warrior for holding aggro, which is your #1 job, or in the case of the monk, buttloads of versatility on top of their tanking ability including extremely high dps and great pulling.
If you want to do high level raiding, a warrior is best. And then an ogre is best. They are unquestionably the best merely because of stun resistance, but you can max out stamina eventually in Velious with nearly any race, at a educated guess. Even then, Ogres will still always be best, by a wide margin, and at a mere 15% exp penalty, they are probably the most economical for the power you get, as well.
I'm just thinking that you don't understand the power loss involved in not choosing an Ogre for any single class they qualify for, even considering your underdog predilection. It's more than significant, it is basically game-breaking.

The most glorious tank to ever play Everquest was a human warrior. Maybe you've heard of him.
Play the race you enjoy, not being an ogre certainly won't prevent you from being the main tank in TMO, our main tank isn't an ogre.

yup you have to roll a an ogre or you are not consider a warrior... i would take halfling innate hide ability over frontal stun immunity any day. wanna interrupt? equip a shield.

Another thing to think about here on a Human is the night vison thingy. I have a gut feeling the devs are toying with making them and Barb really suck like they used to in the start of EQ. I have seen them in 2 threads hinting about it. It would be more "Classic"
They totaly sucked ass at night. The tunnel between Everfrost and Blackburrow comes to mind. A lot of Human Monks will be unhappy pullers in Dungeons if that does happen.

Bobbarker...?
Anyways....
This is indeed a tricky one, I have also found myself in the same dilema. I have been here several years now and started off with a Wood Elf warrior, purely for a change as I had been playing an Ogre for 10 years on Live.
Anyway I deleted the Wood Elf at lvl 31 because of my piss poor allocation of his starting points and re-rolled a Gnome and slammed all the stat points into Dex. The Gnome soon got old though, I have it currently at level 48 and I have rolled an Ogre (common I know blah blah) just to jog my memory, again all starting points went into Dex and he is pretty sound, and I am loving the frontal stun immunity.
Agro was always an issue through classic and Kunark, and I know myself from Live that this did not change for me until Velious when I scored a Venomous Axe of the Velium brood (Proc'd lvl 1+ 85dd) and a Frostbringer (Proc'd 40+ 60dd) and even then you were still at the mercy of your dex.
Anyways....roll whatever race you like really, stick it all into Dex as a future proc investment....and have fun.
Peace,
Wudan

+1 for human bertox war.. especially in the early levels, qeynos catacombs are awesome.
However, if you were to go with something else I would say probably wood elf. I'd wager they are the rarest warriors.. possibly even rarer than gnomes since that is the obvious option for those that seek a unique warrior race. Pick the most pissed off face (the one with the slick black hair.. can't miss it) and worship Rallos Zek. Then just spend the rest of your character's career trying to prove to everyone how badass a fruity wood elf can be.
Don't worry about the 'game-breaking' repercussions of not choosing ogre.. that only matters if you truly play this game for the numbers, and the numbers only. What's truly game-breaking is losing interest in your character and rerolling.. this is especially relevant with the tedious life of a warrior.

This is a game. Play it the way you wanna play it. I rolled a wood elf rogue. People said I was dumb, but I proved them!
