Dunno about battle music, but I do know my favorite music comes from FF7. Had some darker sounding stuff. I enjoyed some of the music on there.

Warsong! Awesome game with good soundtrack.
How about Master Of Monsters? That's a lesser known game with an even better soundtrack.

I played a similar one called Crusader Stronghold.
Was kinda funny setting up ditches with pitch, and setting them on fire with archers + braziers in towers.

I LOVED STRONGHOLD. Took them forever to release that patch man and shit still was buggy. Still loved it.
**Started playing Warsong - god is it difficult. Stuck on saving the town from the thieving marauders.
Try clearing the very first level in Warsong. I managed it once. You clear the whole thing and then the king says something like "we held them off this time, but be prepared for a second attack". The characters all gain good XP for when you find them later.
Oh, and go for King and Saint as upgrades, not Grand Knight and High Priestess.

Stuck on the 5th campaign in Warsong ATM and I think I need to restart completely since I lost the Kings guard beating the 4th campaign and saved over it by mistake.
Yes I'm mad.
After not being able to beat level 1, I tried running away from the castle and it worked or bugged? and got me to level 2.
You're supposed to run away, but I played it often years ago so one time I decided to try to beat that first level, and eventually succeeded (it's really hard to do; comes down to luck mostly). All the characters from that level retain the XP they earned when you find them later so it's worth it.
As far as the king's guard, I think that's the character that accompanies the main character? I do not remember any of their names. If so, don't worry about him because you lose him no matter what. Don't even give him XP. Use him to weaken enemies and give all the XP to your main character.
Just looked up their names. Garret is main character and Baldarov is the one accompanying him. You lose Baldarov so don't bother leveling him.

Wow - if what you say is true; then I have no fucking clue how I'm gonna beat level 5 storming the castle. The difficulty is fucking disgusting yet enthralling at the same time.
Do I RONLY get XP if Garret kills an entire squad or if his soldiers under command kill units? Please advise.
I can't remember. I'm actually considering playing it again after all these years. It's been 19 years so it's amazing I remember as much as I do. I have it for an emulator but don't play it.
Loaded it, and wow nostalgia overload! I'm gonna try to beat level 1 again, and when I find out about XP I'll let you know.
EDIT: Troops also grant XP.
(if you want a really fun game from the sega genesis days, play Master Of Monsters. I linked one of the songs from the soundtrack already)

Disciples yes, HoMM no, but I have played the series' predecessor King's Bounty which I just found out was sort of remade a few years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNKrDl1ykik
