She was already fixed when we got her, luckily. She wasn't named Akita when we got her, but I did like the name. I liked 'Bandita' better but the boyfriend was not a fan.
She has white worms in her poops :[ Apparently not uncommon for dogs out of a pound, but we'll be taking her to the vet this week.

Awesome! Please train her well using positive reinforcement (treats for a properly performed command) and not negative punishment - and pleeeease don't ignore her. She will need attention throughout her life, not just a leash on a tree, which too many owners do these days.
Gratz on your pup :)

cute dog...
name her what you want...he could have called her "Bandy" or something for short, lol
the worms are prolly tapeworm segments; no big deal. just make sure you wash your hands well after handling her...the usual. vet will fix her right up.

When you say negative punishment you probably mean positive punishment (applying an aversive stimulus in order to reduce a target behavior). Hitting or saying "no" are examples of positive punishment.
Negative punishment is removing a positive stimulus in order to reduce a target behavior. A good example of negative punishment would be to turn away/ignore the dog (remove attention) when it tries to jump up on you.
P.S. - cute pup

She's been really great so far. Hasn't chewed on anything, and has only had one accident in my apartment. We swatter her on the nose and then immediately took her outside. Hasn't happened since!
Now kennel training has been harder. She's comfortable walking in and out of the kennel but won't lay down in it. We got her a little doggy bed that she's really fond of, thinking of putting that inside of the kennel once she's really attached to it.

When I have my degree in December I will pursue a real job in my field. For now, my Student Employment job allows me to do homework when the office is quiet, and I can easily take time off for school. I don't work where I work because I want to be an Administrative Assistant for the rest of my life. I'm there because it has pretty good non-monetary benefits.

probably a troll comment, but you need to fix your pets so they don't get pregnant and then you have to deal with 2-10 puppies.
Also don't get pet clothes... they're dumb.
burkemi5
04-25-2012, 10:47 PM
well that's true, i guess it would be difficult to have your dog get pregnant accidently. However, I will note that male dogs who still have their balls can be VERY aggressive, territorial, and basically driven to hump every chick dog who walks by. Some people are okay with it, but i think fixing dogs makes them more friendly, tame, and less primal.

If you have a vet appt today I would suggest waiting on any type of home treatment.
I just got a new puppy from some lowlifes last week that were going to put him in the pound. I did not give him any frontline or anything else prior to his vet appt and the vet was happy that I refrained from self treating.
Not treating the puppy myself allowed the vet to treat him as he saw fit, which ended up being a prescription strength pill that killed ALL fleas on him within 4 hours and keeps killing them until his next appointment (in 2 more weeks now) At that time we'll decide on what options to go with for fleas, ticks, heartworm, etc - which will depend on lifestyle (walking, hiking, etc)
The vet said that had I treated him with Frontline or any of the other over the counter meds you can buy, it would have limited his tx options

The city is really nice in the fact that if you adopt a pup from them, you have one week to make an appointment at participating Vet offices for a free appointment. Any treatment required at this first appointment is free. So while she will require a lot of treatment (she's pooping worms, has ticks, runny nose), it won't cost me a thing.

This was my thought, too. I could have gone out for tick soap and what not but I figured the doc should diagnose first. Her appointment is in about four hours, I'm excited to get her better.
As a side note, I am so impressed with how happy of a pup she is with all these ailments! She's super outgoing, happy, and excited despite having worms coming out of her butt and blood sucking vermin on her skin. She's da best.

Vet prices are outrageous. My dog got a fish hook stuck through he cheek. End up costing me like 200-300 dollars because they sedated her, then she started crashing so they had to use another medicine to un-sedate her, ect ect. knew i should have just taken it out myself, they almost killed her.

She has white worms in her poops :[ Apparently not uncommon for dogs out of a pound, but we'll be taking her to the vet this week.
These white worms are actually a very beneficial source of several vitamins and natural protein. If you can pluck them out it's ok to just eat them right there - no need to cook or anything. Try it. :)

Overall he said she was a very healthy pup! While the adoption center had her listed as three years old, she's much closer to 1.5 or 2. Which is okay by me!
As for the worms - 24 hours prior to the vet visit she quit pooping worms. They did a fecal analysis and said she came back negative for parasite eggs, and that she was most likely just pooping out the adults that were still in her tummy. They gave us a dosage of deworming stuff, which I gave her last night. As of this morning she's pooping worms again, but the vet said that's just the deworming meds flushing out the final round of wormies.
As for the ticks - He gave us some ointment to put on her neck that's supposed to get rid of ticks asap. We haven't found any more, so hopefully that is all taken care of.
Other than that, she's a super healthy 13 pound puppy. Her teeth looked really good, her muscles/joints looked really good, and her lungs and heart sounded just fine.
I was SO relieved after that visit. Akita did really well so we took her to PetCo for some stuff!
