View Full Version : Global OOC In Game vs. IRC Channel

Uh, guys, why don't you just set up an IRC channel for OOC and log into that whenever you're playing? Isn't there already an IRC channel for R99 that you could effectively use for this purpose? Is it incredibly important for this feature to be integrated into the game itself instead of using an IRC client?
If I'm missing something, please let me know. Just trying to help out.

They know there is an IRC channel, they don't use it.

The irc channel is not well advertised.
I suggested they put the info in a sticky on top of the pvp forum but it never happened.
Too busy not doing anything about harrison shitting on the forums maybe.
Im sorry, that was a cheap shot.
For god's sake, ban this fucking moron.

lot easier to have an in game channel than it is to wait for people to download an irc client (isnt like the old days where everybody used irc) and for some of the younger folks learn how to use it/configure/whatever.
essentially how many people participate in something is directly proportionate to how much of a pain in the ass it is. this universal law of truth can be applied to anything, a good example is the 500 people that quit when they remembered how much of a pain in the ass levelling in eq was.

Before this thread gets all shat up with people calling each other names and arguing about who exploited what and who cuts what kind of meat at where, let's just agree not to go that route this time.
Is this assessment accurate: the IRC channel is a viable alternative to OOC. Barring some deus ex machina scenario in which global ooc is implemented, it should be publicized more to let people hang out/communicate despite problems with a low population.
Edit: Sorry Darwoth, I didn't see your post while I was typing mine. Maybe there are simpler alternatives, like a chat room service that runs entirely through a web browser, that could be used?

Please keep your highly delusional messianic complex type comments to yourself for the duration of this thread.
If you have anything meaningful to say that is relevant (i.e. not related to somebody's reputation as a cheater/exploiter) feel free to say it. Otherwise we can look at your post history and pick one of about 95% of your posts and hear that sort of thing.

Secrets I <3 U. Wouldn't this involve some kind of staff involvement, though? I'm trying to point out that there are really simple solutions to the OOC problem that don't require any staff approval / development work.

Yah, it is. How many features should we pointlessly defer to third-party programs that have low conversion rates?
Being forced to trade on the forum instead of /auction in game is also bad. Merchantquest is far far better on the blue server atm due in part because it has active /auction.
This is a five minute change to the source code and should have been turned on months ago. The server already has less people than one zone did back on live anyway, so it doesn't even need to be called "global" chat anymore. It can just be "chat that gets used for intended purpose".

He had a 6 paragraph long post about how black people are evil and the usual KKK stuff you can read around these here parts. My guess is that he got banned for that, but who knows.

I don't think it was so much his initial pro-racism rant so much as it was the insults he later posted about Amelinda for locking said rant.

IRC has rate limits, better security options for voicing people, and other things that can be considered useful.

this is actually worse then normal global ooc, why? because it will attract trolls that isn't even playing on the server to chat through their irc client @ the game.
I don't want harrison shitting up my ooc from his daily deli break, if he wants to participate in the ooc, he better be in the game.
just 5 cents
