Wizards can absolutely kite. In fact, they can quad kite.

Things to consider:

1.) Wizard snare is AE and will snare you if your target is too close. It is relatively higher mana cost than Druid's, and last only 90ish seconds compared to Druid's 12ish minutes! Sometimes snaring is not worth the mana investment / resist chance.

2.) Access to Jboots will be much better than SoW potions in the long-term. Wizzie has a huge mana pool and will spend enormous amounts of time on med breaks, so that actual amount of "uses" out of the SoW might feel super low. Jboots and levitate make wizard beastly and ridiculous. In trouble? Bolt off in a direction for a minute and teleport to Gfay. Gate back to your exp spot. Whee!

3.) With enough INT you can quad as soon as you get your first targeted AE. It casts fast enough that snare is unnecessary, though it will take large amounts of time to build enough distance running around. If you can land the snare on all 4 targets consistently, snare will save you lots of time and effort.

4.) Single target kiting is super simple because wizards have such massive dps when mana conservation is not a concern. It is not the most effective experience-for-time invested, but if you have a safe place to med and something to do it's very consistent, easy, and doesn't take much time at your keyboard. (I got lots of cooking, cleaning, studying, playing Xbox etc... finished while popping over to my wizard and absolutely mowing down a mob in 45~ish seconds total time. Sit down for another 3-4 mins and do it again.

If you are looking seriously at it I can give you some tips on locations. Played a wizard both Live and as an alt to p99.
