There we go, the perfect solution to all those saying we need global /ooc "for the noobs so they dont feel alone".
Amelinda is making a guild called <global OOC> for all those players to join. Finaly this will silience all the trolls who are useing that smokescreen of "helping the noobs" to bring their forum warring in game with a /ooc channel.
Well done Amelinda, I support this new guild. It will help save the rest of us from 24/7 rants and flames in game.
to the global /ooc proponents: no more legs to stand on, "the noobs" have their global ooc guild to join for groups/community, etc.

I guess this is a step in the right direction even if it doesn't appeal to people who want ooc for the sense of a community and are already guilded. I guess.

No, this is real life.
I thought you would be happy, the newbs wont have to run from zone to zone lfg anymore, they can all be in the guild <global OOC> with a simple petition as per MOTD.
Rejoice.
You still have RnF on the forums at least.

How about global /ooc for people who aren't newbs just to have more then a couple people in guild to talk to for shits and giggles?
It will help save the rest of us from 24/7 rants and flames in game.
But I guess since you're too dumb to figure out how to turn off chat filters we can't have that.

Appreciate the thought though guides trying to help, but if they do have <global OOC> as a guild it should be automatic at char creation.

Well, this is an unusual solution. Have to admit that, if it's serious, it's kind of neat and I admire the creativity.
I see two major problems with this, however:
1) As earlier stated, unless joining this 'Global OOC' guild is automatic upon character creation, new players may not be able to use this function. This also includes the times when /petitions are not answered(GM's are not robots, and are not available at all hours). This could be fixed, if it's possible to code it so that all new characters join Global OOC by default.
2) Small groups of players who start on the server often enjoy making guilds so that they may play together under their own, unique banner. Some recent examples from red99:
-Tallon Zek
-Meow
-Toof Spittaz
-The Ancient Mariners
Players in these small, new guilds would be unable to make use of the "Global OOC", as they are not in the "Global OOC" guild, even though they are newer players and may benefit from global ooc chat in general. I don't know of a proper workaround for this issue.
Like you, Arzak, I am not a proponent of global OOC. I also recognize that there are inherent downsides to the issue: for example, if the forums are this polluted with trolling/flaming, how then, would a 'forum-like' channel be any better on a server with dynamic chat(that is even harder to police) as opposed to static chat such as here?
That said, I don't feel like the solution you have presented here is adequate. I would rather wish to see the effects of a trial run of global ooc on the server, and if it is TOO terrible, then it can be removed.

You can easily turn off global /ooc or any chat channel through filters if you don't like seeing it because of "flaming or trolling" it's a voluntary action.

I agree. I was just expressing the kind of argument that would be put forth against global channels.
The counter-point to your counter-point, according to the previous debate(as made by players such as Zyrin) is that, if global ooc is used to reveal player locations, or other such information, then one doesn't have to be a part of global ooc to be affected by it, as such channels can be used against a player who is not even listening to the channel. By that reasoning, players would have to tune in to global ooc to determine if their location was being exposed publicly.
I don't really agree with that point(this IS a PvP server, and there should be inherent dangers, global ooc or no global ooc), but that's the argument that was made.

honestly, at this point, i wouldn't even bother. i spent a long time helping new players in the hopes they'd stick around, but the real problem is that even when a massive majority of the playerbase asks for something (e.g. yellow text, global 1-30 chat channel) to promote a growing population, it gets turned down by devs that don't even play on this server. the fact that rogean peaced to play swtor, and posts on the FOH boards more than he does on his own servers' forums, speaks volumes.
this server will limp along as it is now, slowly bleeding off players until gw2 is out - after that, i won't care what happens to it anyway.

No. Chuck, after our heart to heart - i'm kind of offended at your response. I do the best with what i'm given. I do not have the ability to turn global OOC on. That is an Admin thing. ALSO this is not my server even though I am the GM. I did take this to rogean again last night but as of yet he has not responded to it.
Appreciate the thought though <del>guides</del> GM's trying to help, but if they do have <global OOC> as a guild it should be automatic at char creation.

I have to work with what I am given. I don't have unlimited free reign on this server. I am the GM but this is still Rogean's server. I can't make a major change like implementing global OOC but I did my very best and provided unguilded people with a way to talk to other people.
If you want to talk in the guild or use it to find groups then make a level 1 and petition to join it.
Is this a perfect solution? no. but it's the best one i have for now.
this idea is like a poster child example of how to take a good idea, remove any possible benefit, and pretend like you are doing something helpful

Put this in the right context before bashing Amelinda. She is trying to solve a problem with limited means available.
That should be respected, but I'll be candid on the idea itself: it would cause more trouble than it's worth (and more than global OOC/auction, I think). I'm not going to get into the fine details of why. Start with the concept of a guild being very different than just letting people communicate, and it would only cover a small subset of the playerbase. Players will still be asking for global channels when the pop is < 300-400.
This is besides the point though. We don't need to come up with complicated partial solutions to what could be a 5 minute change. And we don't need to spend hours talking about problems that apply to any chat on the internet (What if they troll it?!?), before those problems even exist and when those problems have easy solutions already anyway (/ignore and filtering are easy enough). After the initial handful of spammers got smashed with the banhammer, the tone would be set and there wouldn't be much moderation required.
There is a big elephant in the room that should be acknowledged: Rogean needs to water his plant (let's say it's an ugly cactus) or at least let everyone know if he doesn't plan on doing so. Specifically, the other people who are spending tons of their time dumping fertilizer onto it trying to keep it healthy (this would be Sirken, Amelinda, etc). And yes, I know that analogy is awful. It may be fair to the red players because we truly are a bunch of assholes, but it's not fair to them.
I think he created this server as a philanthropic act to give red players a home, but not because he has any sort of passion for this type of EQ server (old school RZ/TZ/VZ/SZ). He didn't play on those servers. I cannot really blame him for not wanting to touch this server since red is a different beast with an unappealing player demographic, but give the reins to Null if that is the case. Let someone who cares do that kind of work. Then we can appreciate Rogean forever for putting this server up, while he isn't held accountable for doing all the other shit.
This poll was put up in January
http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=62364
It has a 65% vote in favor of something (72% with neutrals), on an issue that has been brought up constantly for the past five months on this forum.
The "why have you quit?" thread, as gloomy as that is
http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=68211
Has a substantial chunk voted for "lack of GM communication", and the other various votes (features, lack of staff, etc) are connected to what could be addressed by the main developer of the server. Not Amelinda, Sirken, etc. They are just the ones eating shit for it because they're actually here.
Regardless of what Harrison constantly trolls here with, not all (or even most) players are making these threads just because they are trolls or ungrateful scumbags. These are players on the server who want to make it better and providing that feedback. This is the majority of your playerbase. That developer/player relationship is crucial, even if it is just an occasional "I'm listening" reminder. I'm tired of getting asked by my guildmates "if Rogean cares". I don't know if he does, and it's honestly not my problem to solve. I can't set up a candy trail leading from his Star Wars cantina to this server and hire a bunch of strippers in Leia cosplay to make him want to spend time here.
.... or maybe I could

Amelinda, a couple things.
1- i DO play on this joke of a server, just because I don't have time to play 12 hours a day like most people doesn't mean I dont at all.
2- although i'm way too lazy to make searyx-esque tl;dr posts, the point behind my two posts in this thread stands. a "global ooc" guild removes a huge portion of whats helpful about global ooc. Let's say random newbie 005 sees red 99 on the server list, thinks it looks cool, and makes a toon. Great! Now they are a level 1 elf in empty gfay, with no one to talk to and no resources wrt to the server. Unless people are auto-joining this guild, it doesn't really solve the problem at all. In general, anyone who is active on the forums/irc will find people to play with regardless. However, i would venture to say that a large portion of new players/people trying out the server aren't active on the forums. Thus, not only do they not have people to play with, but they also know literally nothing about this guild.

You people are missing a very important point here: I am not a server admin. I do not have access to turn on global OOC. Even if I do have access to turn it on...I don't have permission to turn it on. This server is owned by Rogean. Nilbog is another Admin. I am not.
I am here day after day, busting my ass to help the players, to take care of shit for the server and trying to help encourage people to play. I called Sirken and sweet talked him into coming back. I do my best and then all some of you can do is sit there on your high horses and cry a fucking river because "Amelinda won't turn on global OOC" "GM's don't care" or whatever else.
When you make posts talking shit about me or lack of GM attention it is Quite honestly a big fat slap in the face and is very insulting to me and the time i spend GMing here. It is insulting to Sirken and the time he spends guiding here.

No offense Amelinda you're a great person irl, but this isn't what GMing and promoting server health is about. None of that shit mattered on live. The server is incredibly unclassic and over policed in many regards, not just RMT. GM inteference is absurdly high. I honestly can't see why you even want to stick around because you have a nice family who is more deserving of your time, the server population is incredibly self-invested and immature, and no one appreciates what you do whether it be good or bad for the server (most of which is bad imho, EQ live was about little to no GM intervention, while this server is smothered in GM intervention).
