I was just wondering how many people here are using a droid/Incredible/G1 whatever lately, and if theyve flashed theirs yet!

Im running a moto DROID, just flashed 10 minutes ago with Petes Bugless Beast 1.0 rom, overclocked to 1.0ghz and the smoked glass theme.

Its freaking flying now!

I'm using my old school G1. I'm running whatever's the latest release. Is there a link that I can read more about this rom?

I had to buy a new battery off of Amazon, because I was getting like 4-5 hours out of the phone, I get 2 and 1/2 days now, but it's a damn brick.

Have had a Droid since it released. Android will beat iPhone by far because anyone can develop apps for the market, compared to Apple's strict rules and BS.

I've never flashed mine. No real need for it for what I do.

android > iphone

Android will be on multiple phones on every single wireless provider around! Your iphone will remain on one phone with one provider, exactly why the MAC will never flourish!

At this point the ONLY advantage people sporting iPhones now is that they have a better app market thus far, since it been on the market longer, and though the beter app quality can be debated I still prefer an open market and a phone that we can mod, hack, and tweak to our hearts content without any fear of carrier's locking it down.

I've actually had quite a few buddies from the programming world switch to Android out of curiosity, and they have told me they're mostly happy with the switch.

I was debating on getting the Nexus One, I just can't justify spending 500+ for a phone (I have an old grandfathered plan from SunCom before they were bought out by T-Mobile, so I can't do the cheaper upgrade to it).

I got the G1 when it first came out, before Google allowed people to even charge for the apps; (I think it lasted the first 3-6 months or so). It's been extremely gratifying to see how the app market has exploded.

I think the most telling is the amount of professionally coded software that's making it's way on the Android. I'm a medical student, and there's quite a few apps that were basically considered out of reach for people without an Iphone or Windows Mobile phone a year and a half or so ago when I got my G1. I signed a petition on the designers website for one of the larger medical software suites, and recently they've released an Android version. This software is like a ~100$ software suite (that nearly every medical professional I know uses) for the year. It's nice to see that kind of development jump behind Android software.

I can't speak for Iphone (because I haven't owned one), but I'm glad my phone I bought a year and a half ago gets updated consistently to where I don't feel like I bought old technology, even though I realize the newer generation phones are much more powerful.

I'm not sure I'm a big fan of waving my cock around and saying which is bigger, but I can definitely say I'm extremely happy with my Android, and don't feel like it's lacking when I compare it to people using Iphone. That's enough to make me content.

Shadow... I have to say I'm in debt to you buddy. I couldn't get my school's exchange email to run on G1, and all the research lead me to the understanding that G1 would probably never support Exchange; I'd have to buy Touchdown for 20$ (which I tried the demo and it was cool.. but not worth 20$ to have email on my phone).

With the update to Eclair, it runs my exchange e-mail perfectly. This is something I've been fiddling with for over a year now, so consider yourself deserving of my man-crush <3 !

Your welcome! Usually people (Read, my Wife) just ask me to leave stuff "Well enough alone" and if it works, leave it be!

Im a compulsive fiddler and modder. Ill hack my phone, my xbox, my NES, my radio, a flashlight.....know what? I want a Windows powered refrigerator and Stove just so I can mod them. Play doom on my Stove? Why? I ask why not.

I am finding Android modding to be both relatively safe, and very enriching in terms of what it enables the devices to do. My wife's Droid Eris is next up, Im going to load 2.1 on that device because verizon is holding back any official release for an indeterminate length of time. If i hadnt already of shelled out full price ($600) for the droid I would of upgraded to the Incredible when it came out but with an OC kernal im actually running slightly faster now, with a higher quality (in daylight visability) screen. If anything the motorola DROID is the most modded and most active modding community for any android device yet.

EDIT: ScreenShots of Smoked Glass, this is my droid here. Took them about 5 minutes ago. One screen is missing, the forum only allows 4 images, but this rom has 5 homescreen. Also not shown is the clear pull down notification bar and the clear app tray. SetCPU allows cpu scaling, its set to 700mhz for daily use, 1+ghz for heavy duty, 250 mhz in sleep or stand by for battery. Free wireless tethering is included in this rom, so yea free no contract internet from my laptop wireless or wired through it. Eat crap iPad.

Yeah, I'm not sure if it's inherent in being a man or not... But I just am not happy with things unless I've got it exactly how I want. The exception is something I've broken, or have a high probability of breaking coupled with a low probability of fixing).

It always amazes me to see the people that have a phone for a year and are still asking how to do basic things (My mom for example.) If I get a new phone, the next few free hours are going to be spent tweaking every setting and learning how it all works.

I think the only reason I've steered away from modding my phone is the whole "bricking" worry. I have this mental image comparing bricking my phone to getting donkey kicked in the balls. Plus.. as a student I can't afford to go buying new things that "worked well enough" as you're wife would have said.

On another note. What are the two apps / mods that show the massive digital clock + weather, and the panels for controlling silent, gps, screen brightness, etc?

Turns out its damn near impossible to brick a droid. Ever an insane 1.5+ ghz overclock will just boot loop it, then you just pop into SPRRecovery and reflash your lower kernel. Viola. Thus far, outside of manufactured defencs or phones that had suffered extreme abuse I have yet to read of someone who permanently bricked their DROID.

The Clock and Weather and one widget, the other control are the same widget actually just split off. Its called WEATHER AND TOGGLE WIDGET on the market, its completely reskinnable and customizable, the the clock and weather widgets can also be split up if one so desires. I just picked it up 2 days ago though so i cant give a full review just yet, but i do like it.

One thing ill give the iphone: It "Works". Kinda like a mac. It works the same, all the time no matter what. Its simple, straight forward and unkillable without root acess. At the same time its another tightly closed system, not customizable outside of pre-selected apple approved options.

With the droid its more technical, buggy if you dont know what your doing, and so adjustable and customizable and OPEN that some users get lost in it, having a hard time making basic functions work for fear of hitting the wrong options and getting lost.

Some like it one way, others another.

You have any games running on your droid?

I've taken a liking to WordUp and Bebbled for mental challenges. (Played Torect, but I just can't figure out the damn puzzles).

I beat Age of Conquest to the point where it wasn't fun. JewelLust was pretty, but didn't have playability beyond a few hours.

I probably got the most play time out of Robo Defense, but can't stand to look at it anymore (because of how much I played it for a few weeks).

I'm currently playing Pocket Empire, which seems fun to hop on now and then since it runs real time.

I checked out iMobsters and WorldWar, but they just seem gimmicky.

You have any experiences to share?

I got a Droid the day it release (Nov 6th) and haven't looked back since! (although I did totally destroy that one by accident, and am on my 2nd Droid... I have pics! Haha!) It's an amazing phone. Running 2.1, non-modded/rooted. Only "mod" I have is a Zagg InvisiShield for just the screen, which is a very nice screen protector. Just makes the screen more "tacky" feeling, and not as smooth as the glass.

Games:
UniWar (think Advance Wars)
Bonsai Blast
Raging Thunder
Totemo Lite (not sure if I want to buy this one.. sometimes brutally hard)
Parallel Kingdoms (google map based MMO game.. cool and crappy at the same time)
Light Racer demo
Air Control
WordUp!

I keep dreaming that someone could get a big game running on it... like EQ or WoW or something... well most likely would have to be through a RDP type service like OnLive! is boasting to do. Because I know the specs can't handle it. The HD space is there, but everything else isn't. I love pocket devices and the portability, but am still waiting for them to able to play PC games well :) Seeing Quake & Doom on the Droid is awesome! Stuff like that.

Droid is ho-hum. Sweet phone, but the N1 and the Incredible are lots better. Droid only if you NEED a keyboard (I am in that boat ATM). I still have my G1 I got at launch, and am kind of seeing how this year pans out for hardware upgrades. Qualcom is coming out w/ a 1.5ghz dual-core cellphone chip, and it's supposed to land mid to late this year.

The incredible is fucking awesome to say the least. Played w/ one last week, and it's a beast. Even faster than my friend's N1 (which is weird because they have almost the same hardware...) which he has on AT&T. Both are still faster than a 3gs.

The incredible comes w/ tethering out of the box, straight from Verizon. They have an included app lol. <3 Android. Only people who don't love it are people who haven't tried it. Know a few iphone converts.

What gamepad are you using for the Droid? Can you post a link to one? I'm interested!

And does overclocking it really get that extra performance for Quake? Are you playing it solo - or online against others?

Flash already works, if you run a custom rom like Bugless Beast etc. It also works completely stock on my wife's eris already, no mods needed.

http://sites.google.com/site/gamegripper/buy-game-gripper

The gamegripper actually works REALLY well, and runs only $14. Otherwise alot of common bluetooth game controllers also work fine.

The 1ghz overclock on games (Rather than the stock 550mhz) seriously boosts the consistency of the FPS in a game like quake or doom, and makes SNES or other emulated games run like their original counterparts in the few cases they actually HAD issues to begin with (Super Mario RPG, and a few super scope 6 games). In quake at 1ghz ill average 30-50fps or so, with little to no bogging except in the worst firefights where it might drop to 20ish. I havent figured out if it actually works for lan or net play actually, just haven't checked.

I have on authority (one of my good friends is working on the project), that they're working on releasing a mobile version of EQ2.

He pitched developing a huge MMORPG to his company, and they didn't want to give him a go without something to show for it. He finished about a week early from his given schedule, and they were really excited about what he had put together.

Next thing he knows, he got a call from Sony asking him to be on the EQ2 mobile development. He told me to keep it on the D/L (which I'm obviously somewhat breaking now), but I figure this is a small enough community, can't hurt! =D

I really, really fucking hate not having a keyboard. I've been a blackberry guy for a long time and pretty much got the point where I send a text message at 70wmp and not even look at my phone aside from selecting the contact. Once my most recent blackberry went through water for the 8th time and finally died, I got a refurb 16gig iphone 3g for 99$; not bad I thought. Texting on it drives me insane, at this point, if It wouldn't cost me money, id probably sacrifice the browser just so I could fucking type like a bandit again and go back to a blackberry. The games don't impress me, and not being able to run pandora while I browse/text/anything is straight fucking retarded.

Really the only con I had about the droid was its bulkyness, otherwise everything on it was spectacular, too bad im AT&T fucked for another year and a half.

Yes, it is worth it. The phone overall is faster, more responsive. It fixes the annoying hangs on some phones where using the phone and returning to the home screen could randomly lock it up, among other issues. Also, allows full market use and properly enables full multi-touch, google voice nav and all the other goodies from 2.1

I used to use a rooted G1. Aside from the dull look of early Android phones it was a good phone. It's Sidekick roots were obvious, too (key layout and the way alt worked, etc). I approved. I beta'd Palringo on it for awhile, but what frustrated me the most about Android (and devs) was how screen orientation essentially makes them close and reopen the friggin' app, and the whole "6 open apps only" and how the phone would often close my damned IM app or what not as it wanted to. I'm glad there are more apps on the Android Market, and the Market is superior to iTunes in a LOT of ways. Specifically the My Apps sections and the 24-HOUR REFUND. Being able to set up individual text alerts for people via various sms apps was nice, plus I love multicolor LEDs. Next iPhone needs this. :)

I hope the multitasking has been fixed at some point, but I like my (jailbroken) iPhone 3G S more in almost every possible way. Auteureist, Bleep!box, BeeJive, MyWi, and Blue FiRe get tons of use from me. Not to mention most apps from Amidio and the other music apps I use. Android is pretty dry on creative writing and music apps, sadly. There are some promising ones, and I'm sure it will catch up.

My iphone does auto correct.. sometimes it works well.. sometimes its an annoyance.. Ive been typing on the screen for 9 months now, I can type fast on it aside from the lag and the occasional fat finger, but never will I be anywhere near what I could do on a full keyboard blackberry..

I complained about this to someone who used iphone from day 1, and he goes "I can type really fast without looking at my phone so dunno what your complaining about.." So I said ok look me in the eye and type out a long sentence without looking at it... Yea - it came out - OK - but nothing like a full keyboard.

My favorite thing to do on my blackberry would be walking around, stores, work, whatever, looking forward and talking to people while typing on my blackberry.. always freaked people out...

My sidekick is a POS but you will never text easier on a device :)

Most full keyboard devices are going to be extremely easy to text on, but I think the one that was far and away the easiest for me was the Blackberry that had the navigation wheel on the sides.

http://patterns.littlespringsdesign.com/images/a/a3/Blackberry-scrollwheel.png

The wheel had two directional movement and it could also be pushed in for opening menu, then selecting option. This might sound restricting, but it was much, much faster than the current scroll balls that can go 4 directions. The reason being, is you could "feel" every click or push. The UI was very intuitive and helpful.

For instance:

Unlocking the phone: push wheel once, down to clicks, push wheel again.
Sending Text: Unlock, 5 wheels down to get to contacts, push down once to select contacts, put in first couple letters of person, push down once, menu came up that auto selected call, second option send text, so one wheel down to text, push wheel down once, type out text, push wheel down once to bring up menu, menu auto selected on send text, push wheel down once again.

It sounds like a lot, but you got so used to it, that you could send texts/emails/call/etc. and never look at your screen and do it without messing up since you had a full keyboard.

Anyway, I'm not sure I described that very well, but I was much faster with the side scroll wheel in using the phone then I have ever been with a phone since. And never had to look at the screen...

OK Shadow... i've rooted my Droid and am now running Bugless Beast V1. Tell me where to get those sweet apps you have on your desktop :) I'm looking for that CPU monitoring one, and the nice quick buttons for everything (turn on/off wifi stuff like that). I kept the "standard" theme instead of going to the Smoked Glass one.

Any other sweet apps you could recommend?

OK so thanks to Shadow I rooted my Droid... very cool. I'm going to load Bugless Beast next cause it looks like an awesome ROM. I am using Titanium Backup first to back all my stuff up though.

Question - when I switch to BB V1, will I need to reload all my apps & settings? Or can Titanium Reload them?

Depends, titanian can do full restores if you want it to, but SOME apps have issues being suddenly restored to a different rom than they were originally under, and it can cause bizzare issues. For the most part though you should be good to go. Should...heh.

I take this opportunity to manually reinstall everything, it lets me really know if im using an app or not. If icant remember it, then I probably didn't need it. I suppose its my way of forced system cleaning on a regular basis.

EDITL The clock and toggle widets are the same app, called perdictably Weather And Toggle Widgets on the market.
SetCPU is how you'll overclock. It includes the optional temp/clock monitor widget. The music player name is there on it, MizZing..i use MortPlayer audiobook version for my audiobooks when i drive though. Some other fun apps besides just games would be a Police Scanner...I own real scanners also and the portable nature of the droid and the streaming scanners are a lot of fun.
If anybody wants to tip my poor lv 6 ranger I would be adverse to it =P
