The progression of my night started off with checking out mmorpg.com..a site that i used to visit frequently back in my hay-day of mmo's.
I saw a post about this project1999.. and since i've been here numerous emotions have come over me... excitement, nostalgia, and fear.
I am fearful of a...how my life might deteriorate due to addiction, or b.. that i might be disappointed and disillusioned. I know it can never go back to what it is in my memories.
I'm excited because the one thing that EQ had, which other games that I played didn't was the community. From reading some posts here it seems that there is a good community here, and that gives me hope.
here's a little intro of my eq past:
Everquest was my first MMO. I started playing when I was 12. My parents' friends guided me along my journey. I played on Brell Serillis from '99-2002. My first character was a dwarf warrior named Borty. I was a shit tank. I ran away first; basically, I didn't know what a tank was back then.
I then rolled a druid to level 55(Kimbutachi), whereupon doing my epic quest I found out that my un-updateable (or so my parents said at the time) computer lacked the RAM to go into city of mist without crashing (I couldn't afford the quest item at the time). I then re-rolled my final main character, Kaels Yufasst. He was a monk whom I leveled to 61.
To this day, my favorite video game memories aren't of playing super mario brothers, or even the epic sieges in DAoC, but the times I spend pulling in Karnor's Castle, SolB, Velketor's Labrinth.
I've read that hybrids get this exp penalty, and people are typically grouping with pure classes. Would it be an unnecessary burden for me to roll a hybrid? Also, because I was so young (12-16) when I played, I don't know any of the theory behind items, skills, etc. like I have come to learn in my most recently played mmo's. With this community being more veteranesque, will I be shunned?

Welcome. I wonder if it was my post you saw. I got warning for posting about Emulators last week on MMORPG.com :P
The community is great and there are tons of newbs, even on the RED server.
I started two weeks ago and its a blast and people are cool and I even found a guild of low level players like myself to group with.
Nothing better than Classic EQ with a dash of PvP :)
I got a spare set of Titanium CDs, if you need them send me a PM.
there is no community here just a bunch of power gaming farmers

^^^Lies,
There are a bunch of chumps, but overall I find if you have a positive attitude on this server you'll go far.
If you are just returning to old school EQ, I'd suggest going Enchanter, Shaman, or Monk. Always wanted, decent soloability, still wanted end game.

i personally give shit to newbs all the time and so do a lot of people. you never saw that on live.

The server is great and as good as it gets with no better option. The community is by and large great, again, until you wish to raid (or even look at the PVP option, that "community" is a cesspool of childish griefers and cheaters, more intent on ruining your day than playing the game)
Raiding in this game isn't about skill, talent, or ability. It is about putting large amounts of people on a spawnpoint and waiting for the mob to spawn. Veeshan's Peak is about training, because GMs are tired of dealing with the bullshit of certain raiding guilds so they made it a "hands off" zone for GMs.

Don't listen to Harrison - despite his strong opinions, he's never actually raided and actually doesn't know anything about it on this server aside from what he hears in RnF.

As much as I loved my monk, and boy did I, I want to experience something new. Shaman is one of the few classes that I didn't roll back in the day. I think i'll give that one a shot. I like to be a buffer/healer, and the soloability higher on could lend to growth of the e-peen.
edit** I am amused that after all this time, rangers are still squishy and unwanted. I feel for them, really, I do.

Flat out lie, 100%
^in one of said guilds who are part of the disgusting raid scene shenanigans which include training each other nonstop in Veeshan's Peak, and killing epic spawn mobs to cockblock others out of spite.
I gave up raiding here because of people like this.
Like I said. 90% of this community and server is great and helpful until you reach the point where you want to raid. That portion of this server is severely mishandled, and not at the fault of staff. People at that part of the game are just massive children incapable of being mature, responsible, human beings.

I stand by my statement. You've never actually raided here, Harrison. If you wish to dispute this, would you please detail the specifics of your raiding history?
You don't even know what the fuck is going on on the server. Seriously, you get your info from a couple of RnF crybabies.
Stop pretending that you have a clue.

Guilds aren't training each other incessantly in Veeshan's Peak? The GMs didn't declare it a hands off zone because of the antics of the guilds raiding here?
Guilds don't plop people on spawnpoints to "claim" them rather than mobilize to them?
What of what I just said does not happen, has never happened, or is a lie? That's right. None of it.
The immaturity and appalling state of affairs the raid scene has been for over a year now is why I, and MANY others, have stopped playing here.
If you stay clear of this, and the guilds involved by not raiding, this server is amazing.

Now you're just flat out lying.
I, with my own eyes, have witnessed the poopsocking and general douchebagginess of this server's raid scene. You can make all the lies you want about your individual guilds in an attempt to save face, but about the entire state of affairs you cannot.

Harrison, you are flat out wrong and stupid. VP was made "lawless" before it ever opened. It wasn't in response to any sort of behavior. You are so incredibly dense.
Whatever it is you have to say about the raiding game, Harrison, don't pretend that you get your information from anywhere other than RnF. You are a stupid pud.
The raiding game on p99, although cutthroat, is pretty amicable generally! It is not the shitshow you imply. Yes, incidents do occur, but overall, it is pretty friendly, competitive, and fun.
Once again Harrison demonstrates to us that you can make things true by saying them enough times (not really). Harrison, get your head out of your broke ass.

Luckily for me, EQ was about the journey, not the destination (well, hitting 60 was an AMAZING feeling). The only raids I ever did on my monk was an application raid at NTOV, and then I think I did Chardok once.

You'll have fun here. Just ignore the fools shitting up your thread...they don't have much else going on.
Make sure to hit up crushbone, oasis and lake of ill omen around. I've seen 20-30 low level people in those zones at prime time. Seems like the low level scene is fairly vibrant at the moment. And if you need any help, most higher level folks are happy to lend a hand.

Server is great so far. Im a level 8 troll shaman - Darlia - , in a couple of levels gonna start farming GLS for that book quest in sro for plat so if ya wanna join me ya can.
As for the raiding thing, thats pretty normal, at least it was on live. Nothing wrong with a lil campetition.

Just yesterday I was sitting on the bridge to NK in EK with my lowbie enchanter, medding low on mana, when a DE cleric came running up and told me to zone, that a big train was coming. So I zoned with him, and a few seconds later some other players also zoned, with a sigh of relief. I thanked him for the heads up, we traded buffs and moved on.
I can't remember anything like that happening on EQlive servers. I do remember shouts of TRAIN TO ZONE and getting splattered before I could close my spellbook.
I understand that training happens quite a bit among raiding guilds on this server. I wouldn't know and probably won't get the chance to find out. Not sure what you might see at the end of the road, but you will find some decent helpful people along the way.

I played on Brell, Dark Elf Warrior, Maleick.
I also had a boxed cleric named Noval when the real Noval went to the Navy.
I miss Shakerpaging in Fungus Grove! Two AA's per 6 minutes.
Not sure what class I want to roll this time around. I made a dwarf cleric but I can't decide if I want to stick with that or make a Enchanter or Bard.

The bard idea popped into my head as well. I had one who horribly lost his body because I died in Najena right before my family moved. He was a lot of fun though, as I remember.

Word to big bird. Some people in competing guilds are good pals. Just like all news, you almost always only hear the bad, not the good.
In general we are all the same EQ geek, just with different guildtags. Alot of us recognize that. There are notable exeptions of course.

Don't listen to retards like Harrison who only come here to post on the forum and do not actually play.
Is the end game raid scene competitive ? yes.. do you HAVE to play that way and still get awesome items and raid with friends ? NO..
If you play and meet people in game you will come to find that the people in game are not very representative of alot of the no life trolls you find on the forum.
Welcome and enjoy P1999!
missingno, if you do decide to start a shmmy i have a charred gaurdian shield and a few various other lower end items you can use. my only request is that you hand them off to another noob in need when you out grow them. my name is mala in game as well, send me a tell later today, i should be on.
and as many people in this thread have described, just stay away from the forum drama and this server is amazing! and not nearly as bad in the high end as harrison describes, i have a lot of fun raiding.:D

The forums and IRC channel can make it seem like the server is a battleground, but then you actually log in and everyone's just having a good time together for the most part. Probably why only a minority reads either one.

This will surely be suppressed because the devs/GMs here have "I do no wrong" attitude towards their actions but GM favoritism and preferential treatment, while not as bad as many emulator servers I've encountered, does indeed exist here. The population is low enough that you're unlike to encounter these problems at low levels but at I guarantee at higher levels you'll encounter the bullshit.
