It appears the SOPA failure backlash will be felt by Megaupload first.

The guy behind Megaupload is a huge scumbag. Kim Dotcom (Kim Schmitz) has an extensive criminal background and that is most likely the reason why the site was targeted.

I'm not sure giving the U.S. government more incentive to want to control the Internet is such a smart move on Anonymous' part.

Here's one reason they've been able to muster so much firepower: Anonymous members are distributing a link that ropes internet users into an illegal DDoS attack against these websites simply by clicking it. The link is being shared widely on Twitter and in Anonymous chat rooms, often with no context except that it relates to Operation Megaload. I clicked it a few minutes ago because it was being spammed in an Anonymous chatroom and found myself instantly DDoSing Universalmusic.com, my computer rapidly pinging the page with no way to stop except quickly closing the window.

Anyone have suggestions for other similar sites for uploading large files now that Megaupload is gone?

From the sound of it the owners had plenty of money so they will have some good lawyers. This will probably be temporary with the possibility of it being permanent. If it does stay down permanently somebody else will step up with another website.

You can read the indictment here:

It's over.

Of all of the millions of videos, music, and pirated files uploaded since 2006, they chose to cite an uploaded song by 50 Cent in the official indictment...

"Any Internet user who goes to the Megaupload.com website can upload a computer file. Once that user has selected a file on their computer and clicks the “upload”button, Megaupload.com reproduces the file on at least one computer server it controls and provides the uploading user with a unique Uniform Resource Locator (“URL”) link that allows anyone with the link to download the file. For example, a link distributed on December 3, 2006 by defendant DOTCOM (-www.megaupload.com/?d=BY15XE3V-) links to a musical recording by U.S. recording artist '50 Cent.' A single click on the link accesses a Megaupload.com download page that allows any Internet user to download a copy of the file from a computer server that is controlled by the Mega Conspiracy"

I just found that interesting. And yes, they will likely not recover from this. Also, expect to see a lot more of these types of charges.
