Swarm Kiting

I am new to this swarm kiting and have watched a few videos. Seems like the range is a lot shorter than the video I found here:

Also, when I auto run and just try to turn/strafe with the mouse only, it turns very slow. What Am I doing wrong?

Practice with 4-5 mobs that you can easily take a beating from. When you are able to take out those 4-5 without getting hit, easily, then go out and grab 25 mobs and do the same thing.

If you are having a lot of trouble with the range, just stick with the level 18 song that has an extended 5 yard range and take 2x longer to kill everything. Most of your time kiting is spent gathering the mobs anyway.

Sometimes I can do it without getting hit, but sometimes I get hit. I am using the lv 18 song with the horn but it still seems like it has the same range as the low level one. I guess practice makes perfect. Oh and I am lv 19 now lol!

I'd be interested in knowing how much exp I really did w/ exp leeching/exp penalties/75+ exp deaths/44 Levels, lol god damn if it isn't over 60. I'll take a free L60 if kunark ever comes out. I do think its funny that anyone would try bragging about their snail-pace, poopsock necessary leveling to 50 after I didn't play for over 3 days straight, another 1-2 stint, had pretty much leveled the two highest level characters on the server L28/9+L25, did it all solo (well reverse-solo considering the above), vs..

Considering your the only person with this problem im pretty sure you just suck. Kiting is easy once you get the hang of it, I have no problem using the level 2 dot consistently and the level 18 should be very easy. The "lag" you talk about is non-existent, I even level up in the middle of my kites and don't have any issues.

To the op: I wouldn't take any advice from cast since he openly demonstrated how bad he was(is?). If you do feel lag from particles or something, just turn them off, but from people zoning into the zone, LOL, yeah that won't mess you up. Cast just trying to come up with excuses to why he died 75+ times.

If someone zones in there's a slight lag delay I believe or sometimes just a small one at random. What happens if you turn around complete while strafing and turning. I had some freeport guards get trained on me and chase me, while running for NFP, I had this happen and barely zoned with like 3% hp... It turned me completely around.

Anyone who says there is no lag from zoning, has never tried to AoE kite in Butherblock. I can tell you when the boat arrives from anywhere in the zone, before it is even visible.

Dying 75x is pretty pathetic though, especially without any competition. I died ~10 times from level 1-40 and 8 of them were from being rooted and 2 were from the lag in BB.

Ok try taking that lag you're talking about, and doing it in any zone when any person zones in/out/levels up

Instead, I died over 75 times to mobs. That's what my logs say anyways, I contend it should be a lot more, though I didn't necessarily ragelog all that much so I guess its close...

Viola any disk access is the same as ram access i.e. no lag.

Eq was unfortunately designed to stop everything the moment it needed to show/load anything.

Thought I'd add a how to do this in easy to follow steps:

1) Trim your eq installation or a copy of you installation (if you want to log in to other servers with post-velious material) using Duxa's Installer (http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=28335&highlight=duxa)

2) Get ImDisk (http://www.ltr-data.se/opencode.html/#ImDisk), allows you to make a virtual disk from system memory (ram)

3) Create virtual disk with 3GB of system memory, it only uses what it actually uses, 2gb disk can give you low-mem warning.

4) Copy the entire Everquest folder into the new virtual disk, (should take a min or two). Run that EQ version.

5) Remember to copy your UI or other changes as once you shut down your computer the ram copy will disappear.

Side-effects: 1) You will zone insanely fast. 2) You may have to fiddle with UI every time. 3) You have only yourself to blame for kite deaths now.

Yeah windows reserves about 1gig for itself. You will typically hover around 2.8gig used in the task manager. That said if you open too many other apps (browsers can be massive hogs), you will start using the page-file which will grind your computer down to a halt until you close things.

EQ installation 1.96GB, EQ ram usage up to 512MB, system usage anywhere from 300-750MB. You can use classic themes to lower usage, but you shouldn't need to do this.
