It was in for a day, long enough for me to almost die not expecting it to work and then almost die again from expecting it to work after it was ninja removed.

Either that or sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I was assuming they removed it since you can canni / nuke yourself / etc and trigger guards attacking you.

well in classic eq it was more entertaining because it had more advanced code where it was faction-based .. you'd have to predict if your faction is better than theirs. You can also find certain "soft spots" where you can cast from if they were in range. There were a lot of tactics involved, but all risky in case guards notice. If both ally, they let you duke it out.
If dubious, they won't protect you at all unless the other guy is dubious too (gotta be indiff+), if both are between indiff to warmly, it's whoever attacks first. If one is ally, he can freely attack anyone else. If both are ally, no guards assist at all.
This server is just ... guard see, guard kill.

I believe it was said that pre-Luclin guards did act this way in classic (ie that only when Sullon Zek was introduced did guards assist based on faction as opposed to just assisting non-kos people). I don't know which one is true and I don't really have any evidence either way, just thought I'd chime in.
