Hey I just found out my wife got me this game for Christmas (yay me!). What server are you all on? Any advice?

I'll be getting on later since I will not get to open it until past New Years. Kids not home from X's house until after the 28th so we will not open presents until then.

Heh, wowie, SWTOR (swuh-tuhor), I don't even know where to start with you. I played you for about 15 hours and I'm still playing you (making my astromech do chores). You are a piece of work. I forgot I was playing an MMO for a couple of hours due to how engrossed I was with your quests. Combat made me want to kill things (this had an effect on my Jedi's alignment, yes, that's here too.) I literally talked my butt off with my Smuggler just to seem like a douche bag. You offer so much choices, and I'm not even a fraction of the way done with leveling.

Combat
This was probably my favorite part that sets the game from other MMOS. SWTOR has no auto-attack. This may seem counterintuitive to "good" combat, but it was probably the most engaging first 10 levels of my life having to balance attacks. You get a standard attack that you spam in between cooldowns, that costs no resource and has a non-existant cooldown (shoot blaster with smuggler, saber strike on jedi). There's really a lot more to choose from in a battle when the global cooldown is all you have. Smugglers have a system for cover, which prevents some ranged attacks from blowing their squishy asses to the dirt, and makes planning an engagement fun and engaging (don't hit me). Jedi felt right at home with a little twist to a standard fantasy warrior, Troopers felt overpowered (i could spam missiles all day) and force specialists felt very squishy but powerful if left alone.

Questing and Dialogue
Oh my Gods, you guys. This is definitely a piece of BioWare work. The tutorials themselves are amazing, I don't want to spoil it if you plan on playing, but they REALLY fit the class. Smuggler made me feel like a genuine Han Solo, Jedi had all the corny YO DAWG RESPECT YO MAGICS (force, sorry), and Trooper made me feel like I don't want to be in the military. There are so many things you can do, ESPECIALLY ON SMUGGLER. I FLIRTED WITH EVERY GIRL I CAME ACROSS AND IT OPENED SO MUCH MORE OPTIONS. The game looks and feels like Mass Effect with lightsabers. Dialogue is handled via BioWare™ Radial Menu, leaving you with usually 3 choices. Light and Dark dialogue will tell you what is what, so you don't accidentally kill someone on your little innocent Jedi.

PvP
This is my muse. My area 'o expertise. PvP in this game IS AMAZING. IT IS SO BALANCED, YOU GUYS. I could not get over how much classes countered each other perfectly. Smugglers can cheaply (nut shot with a foot) get out of Jedi confrontation, Jedi can completely counter casters, casters counter bounty hunters, all of this fun stuff. 1v1 encounters are AMAZING and are encouraged, you get more out of it. Rewards are given for successful 1v1 fights so a lot of people try them. The open world pvp is pretty fun and I'm not even that far into the game yet. Being able to level Star Wars' version of Renown/Prestige starts at level 10, so you won't be completely useless in endgame. The 3 maps that they have just in the Beta are amazingly fun, there's a Dominion like map, a standard Attack/Defend, and a weird soccer/football hybrid match with anyone vs anyone.

I really dig this game guys, and I'm buying the pre-order on my next paycheck. I really suggest some of you try the same.

Game is good, it's like KOTOR with multiplayer and less like a MMO in my opinion.

Quests are easy, flashpoints/heroics are not.

Specially when the random pool of gamers you have to play with are all from WoW and Rift and have no idea about how to correctly play most roles that require any brainpower at all.

In most of my groups and PvP I have been told I'm the only tank (Vanguard) that has been worth a damn. Many MVP medals my friends.

Playing a Bounty Hunter on Thana Vesh, if you thought the story was good at low levels wait till you finish Chapter 1. Killed the world boss on Dromund Kass today while messing around, dropped 2 pieces of purple gear, handed em to a random Bounty Hunter who stopped by to watch as they both had aim on em. Having a blast playing, a much needed break from the raid scene here.

Hoping the new players catch up soon been skipping all the heroic 4 quests because there's really no one around my level on these planets. Taris has 1 other person on it when I just logged out.

It amazes me how much of a wow copy this game is when it comes to mechanics, graphic styles (although slightly higher depth of quality), and many other aspects. With that said, I'm still playing. Quest dialog is intriguing and I could even find myself going through all the other classes at some point, but right now I'm sticking with my Jedi Consular, planning to go Shadow.

The dialog for quests has been amazing. And my class quest was fun as hell.

I'll be checking out the other class story lines soon enough I'm sure.

And you're right about it being a WoW copy for the most part. Tragically they set the bar for MMOs now a days...look at Aion / Rift / hell even EQ2.

They did something right I guess.

I like the group social things where people roll to see which dialogue open gets chosen in the quest. It's funny when you see the 3 choices and then someone picks the sarcastic one and wins.

I dont like how easy the quests are, at least in the beginning (Im only level 10 Jedi Knight) and it's not that they're easy, it's that everything is marked on the map. Being an EQ player that really annoys me.

Pretty fun overall though

Itemization and questing is completely identical to WoW. I can't believe they get away with this shit honestly. Just like Warhammer did except without the 1 redeemingly unique feature of pickup group quest areas.

The quest dialogue is totally fucking amazing, and saves this whole pile of WoW-emulated shit. Better than either KOTOR just because of that... KOTORs would have the most godawful boring English accents you've ever heard droning on to equal wasted hours, days of my life. There are one or two recycled in TOR but on the whole, it's superior.

What's the monthly sub ?
What's the level cap ?
How carebear is it ?
Do I have to be a Star Wars super nerd to excel at it ?

Q6600, 8800GT, 8GB ddr2 800, Win7 64bit, it runs pretty smoothly on this, but I have settings on low cept for texture quality is on high because a friend of mine mentioned that their computer actually runs the game better with it on high rather than low. Which is a bit odd, I didn't really notice any change with the switch.

that's kind of a dumb rationalization, how is that different from any other game?

If you want people to work well together you find a good guild and join it and acclimate yourself to there play style while trying to benefit the group by adding insights of your own.

every mmo has bad pickup groups, especially in the beginning

I was in a large preformed guild, people constantly complained in /guild and /general the game was "too hard".

Even in Warzones people played like shit and never communicated through /ops while ignoring the few that did.

Game was fun as KOTOR 3 and that is it for me. Leveling was fast, easy, and effortless while anything other then leveling that required others to work together was a waste of time with dogshit/silent players.

At least on the Republic side on the PvP server I rolled on. I was the only one who EVER had protection points in Warzones or any idea of wtf was going on.

When it came to "pulling" or "tanking" in PvE it was even worse, I was like the only tank I ever saw (Vanguard) who pulled or tanked correctly.

Everyone else ignored anything I said while contributing nothing through chat other then "Don't tell me how to play" resulting in constant flashpoint or heroic wipes.

The same people would leave immediately after wipe while complaining the game was "broken and too hard" when it was obvious the game is extremely easy but these people seem to expect free loot with ZERO effort or coordination.

The players ruined the game that was too easy and boring to play alone.

While also being too shitty, whiny, and silent to accomplish anything as a group.

I got SWTOR a few days ago... it feels a lot more like a single player RPG than a MMORPG.

Think KOTOR2 merged with WoW and then on top of that layer on all the coolest features of Dragon Age.

It's not very WoW-like in feel, more in the sense that it obviously included a number of MMO features that were developed for or improved by WoW. If you are either expecting a WoW clone or worried that it might be one, you can set that concern aside - it's not. Regular PvE gameplay feels more like Dragon Age without pauses than it does like WoW.

Also, the classes are unique - not like WoW or its predecessors in any way. I get the impression that they actually went back to old school D&D in thinking up and redesigning classes - for example, the Jedi consular/shadow I'm playing plays like a 2nd Ed. Fighter/Thief from the Baldur's Gate days (with perhaps not quite so much cheese).

So far, it looks like a fantastic product, high production quality, no skimping on the dialogue, very immersive. I like very much how it hides a lot of the network mechanics (there's a minimum of "loading please wait"), and while the difficulty level is low (so far, anyway - I can beat virtually all of the encounters using just double attack), there's enough going on in combat to keep you solidly engaged.

Haven't tried the PvP yet - that's not really my thing, even though I'll do it every so often - so I can't report on that.

If you got the $60 + $15/mo. to drop on it, it's worth your time.

usedtobejubaloftorv

and saying this is a wow clone is saying wow is an EQ clone...

WoW felt a lot closer to EQ when the former came out, than SWTOR feels like WoW. SWTOR probably represents 10x the amount of original work that classic WoW was.

But more than that it's a lot more coherent - when you go from area to area, it's not just because you've outlevelled the last area and you need something new - you get led there, compellingly, by the plot.

I haven't played SWTOR, but I have played WoW. From reading what you guys are saying, it sounds like WoW has ruined people's expectations of what to expect from an MMO. On WoW you can grind to max level in two weeks and acquire gear that is slightly below raid level in less than a month. Personally, I found the WoW paradigm to be pretty messed up, and hopefully this isn't how SWTOR is working. Ninja, hopefully your future groups won't be full of people from WoW who expect to be handed max level and almost max gear in 2 months.

SWTOR can only use a max of 2 GB Ram (Since it is a 32 bit application, even running on a 64 bit machine). That would explain why it wouldn't improve the performance of the game, and it did however let your tasks in the background keep their memory, instead of paging and forcing the computer to pull all that from hard drive after leaving the game.

However, now that I think about it, SWTOR actually utilizes two processes, which means its theoretical maximum memory usage is 4 GB.. But I don't think that it will be splitting the memory load that evenly, one of those processes has to be responsible for graphics while the other is responsible for mechanics and gameplay, and the former would be using the bulk of memory.

I dont know what server you're on, I picked one that was labeled population "standard". there seems to be quite a bit of players. Anyway I have run into a few people that get discouraged easily when things turn bad. But I think that's the culture for video games these days.. Easy mode.

That said, I have run into a considerable amount of players who don't give up on shit and aren't expecting handouts.. they quickly get put on my friends list and I've pretty much done all my heroics and flashpoints with these people up through Alderaan.

I think it's more about finding likeminded players and ignoring the newbs.

While the main story quest has been quite easy, some of the heroics/flashpoints can certainly be challenging especially if done at the proper level range.

I was kind of hoping the P99 people that are playing this game would play on the same server whether it be pvp or pve and start a guild so when the time came we could own eternity vault and the palace thing and do them on hard/nightmare.

But that seems to not be happening so far.

I've actually been creating the challenge for myself. I am progressing along my class quests 2 levels below the level recommendation on the areas. Solo the entire time except for 1 Flashpoint. I'm doing the typical procedure of grabbing every quest in an area when I show up, but I do a lot of sneaking around unless the quest has a bonus kill quest.

Playing correctly is the key though.. I take time to learn what my abilities are and how they work, and how each can influence the others, and form a strategy to use. The game is filled with wow players and etc that want easy-mode button mashing. I've solo'd Champions 2-3 levels above me.

Cool so far. You'll rely a lot on Qyzen Fess to tank for you so you can get behind and backstab (Shadow's Strike). I'm specced infiltration and I got to the point at level 20 or so that Qyzen simply can't keep aggro over me anymore due to the damage I'm doing, especially because I come out of stealth to attack which gives me 50% Force regen, so I can do like 3-4 backstabs in a row. I've resorted to sending Qyzen in first on a mob to get the attention of all the mobs in the pack and I can go around and backstab the weaker ones, which usually kills them in one shot or a subsequent saber strike.

Expecting people to be able to play well this soon after release is not realistic. I got a level 23 Shadow going and I'm still trying to develop basic tactics. Heck, I'm not even sure what the hotkey bindings are other than movement - I'm still clicking everything other than basic attacks.

As far as it being easy, yes it's terribly easy so far, but I haven't gotten to higher levels where the challenge should be yet.

But even if it doesn't last, so what? I got what I paid for which is essentially KOTOR3, and I'm satisfied with that alone. All the multiplayer stuff is just a bonus.

We'll find out in good time whether this game has the stamina to last, or whether it's a flash in the pan, but either way I think it's a good movie!

Im really enjoying this game so far, has me way more interested than any mmo ive played in the past 5 or 6 years, besides p1999 of course. Playing a Jedi Guardian currently with a few RL friends on a pvp having alot of fun. They do need to really work on the battlegrounds system though, having level 12's thrown in with 50s and just evening out the stats is incredibly dumb. However, having dialog and cut scenes is something the mmo genre has needed for a long time, it makes you actually care about the quests you are doing. Also in regards to key binding, its really best to just bind your abilities and learn them from the start, its much harder once you get used to clicking imo.

might not be a cap on the world bosses, but:

-they can all be done with 10-16'ish of the proper level
-even with massive force, the first operation group to attack are the only ones eligible for the drops.

of course I suppose they can pass them on to whomever as long as they dont bind on pick up.

there's 3 planets with contested bosses at level 50. the rest are from leveling up. Drops are BoP i believe. You're going to need a lot more than 10-16 to take on the 50-70 sith heading your way.

Hey bros. , downloading the swtor client now. I want to play Jedi guardian. Couple questions: is Jedi guardian the only class w heavy armor(or sith version of guardian). Can I level to 50 in a reasonable amount of time ONLY doing warfronts after level 10?(I did this is rift on several characters and could keep geared buying pvp gear, will this work in swtor?) also I'm in Texas, any suggestion for a pvp server where the Jedi team plays well in warfronts? Also are queue times long for pvp? Thanks.

Jedi Guardian is the only jedi allowed heavy armor, same with Juggernaut, you're missing on literally 75% of the game if you only pvp, and pvp queue times depend on server.

Troopers also get heavy armor. I wouldn't advise relying on pvp to level to 50. You should definitely do the daily pvp quests, but non-pvp questing keeps you updated with gear, credits, and experience.

Also, do your class storyline, that's like 95% of the reason to buy a bioware game

Nedala

Arent you kinda supossed to do the storyline? You get your ship and all your companions during the story line, and other stuff too.

I really like the game so far, especially the quests. But im disappointed by the space missions you cant even fly on your own. They should have made the space battles like in battlefront, with huge pvp combats.

The Revanchist

They're confirmed somewhere (read: rumor) that we'll be getting guild capital ships, and with that will come guild vs guild space combat; that will need free flight space to pull off.

I was reading a thread on SWTOR.com about free flight, and someone in there said it was confirmed. I'm taking it as rumor, but I can hope.

SWG had a decent space flight system.

But a combination of Eve and SWG, in SWTOR.. would probably be epic. (I didn't really play Eve actually.. but from the videos I saw it looks like a good open flight system.)

Any server really right now.. maybe pick one with a moderate to high population if you want fast warzones. Queue time for me on a standard load server is anywhere between instant and 2 minutes. Even off prime time the queue are relatively fast, but you'll start bumping into the same opposing players more often. There's also no "Jedi" team.. you would be republic (and queue with troopers and smugglers).

I only like the alderaan civil war warzone, other 2 are gay.

I just finished sentinel story couple days ago, I'd do the story line quest if I were you, but yea you can certainly gear yourself out in pvp gear only if that's all you do, probably want to finish coruscant in order to get your ship though. only way to get companions though is by progression through story.

also there is more PVP stuff that opens up on Ilum when you get to level 50.

but fuck PVP in the mouth imo, never been a big fan, and solo queue'ing is 50/50 if you're gonna get grouped up with a bunch of fucking idiots and lose miserably.

if you group queue with known good players PVP is fun.

the game is fun, but it's no Everquest -- EQ retains #1 mmo all time ranking

Occasionally I group with a guardian friend of mine.. which might give us a slightly better chance on Huttball, since he can jump to enemies and friends, and pass me the ball if he needs to.

Also have a sage friend I'm trying to get into pvp, which helps for both heals and pulling teammates up platforms.

Overall I'd say all 3 are fun warzones, and all 3 can be influenced by how good or bad your team is. I do pretty much all pugs and yea its hit or miss whether you get a group of people willing to work out a strategy at the start, or a bunch of level 16's who do nothing but BREAK MY FUCKING MIND MAZE ON THE ENEMY HALF A SECOND BEFORE I PLANT THE BOMB ON THE DOOR OR CAPTURE A TURRET AND LET THEM INTERRUPT ME !@#!%@#$#@

Sorry, got carried away.

People on Ilum (the high level open pvp world) trading kills to finish their Ilum quests and get the bonuses.

Basically one team is stacking up to get aoe'd down, then the other team does. I've never seen this happen in-game, but apparently it's a big problem on some servers.

I don't know anyone who wouldn't lie, take the first kills from the opposing faction, and then refuse to let them kill you - so I doubt this will ever go down on the server I play on. But then, Imp/Rep really, really hate each other on my server, up to and including camping each other's bases and killing anyone who leaves town.

Most of this game is kind of boring (instances/"end game" are nothing super cool yet), but the class stories and pvp are really fun.

Rogean

It was surprising to actually chill out and talk to some of the imps I had been targetting in warzones and cursing at when they killed me (especially the chain tracer missile spamming assholes), and they turned out to be pretty cool about everything (and some even had a good sense of humor).

pvp rewards suck, the columni and rakata stuff is miles better.

which u get from PVE

ergo PVE is far superior in mmo's of all kind!

plus they're going to change mechanics to those ilum daily/weeklys

my server right now all people do is drive around and snipe the boxes as they spawn, they dont even fight each other lol, and it's usually only 4-5 people in the central base at any given time.

standard server pop which apparently is full of incredibly slow level'ers

So hooked to this game. I am currently playing on Krayt Dragon, dunno if any peoples here are playing there or not.

Currently have:

50 Sorcerer - Basically my main. Has near full set of Champion (Missing 2x Relics, Boots, and a Hat).
37 Mercenary - Started and planned as my main. I really wanted to be able to play a healer and I felt that the Mercenary Healing system was just not as easy at the Sorcerer's healing system. The non-linear regeneration rate for the Bounty Hunter works fine for DPS but can get annoying as a Mercenary. Maybe I should have stuck it out further to get further up the healing tree but I just didn't enjoy it.
23 Assassin - I started this character as a PVP only type of character. I leveled up to level 15 and got my ship so I could do space combat AND PvP to level it up. I then found out that your Valor Rank can't be higher than your actual Level and stopped playing the character. I couldn't bear the thought of doing Balmorra again.
17 Vanguard - I just wanted a character on the Republic side and Vanguard/Powertech really interests me. It has been fun but I am busy with other characters at the moment.
15 Operative - Two friends and I all made Imperial Agents and we all chose Operative as our advanced class. We are leveling these characters only together. It has been pretty funny and a blast thus far. We just run the flashpoints three or so times in a row to get gear hah.

Overall I didn't expect to enjoy PvP but it has been a ton of fun. When you play a class that is useful at Huttball (ie. Not Tracer Missile n00bs, Not Operative Stealth BS n00bs, etc) it is actually a blast. As a Sorc I can bubble and heal as well as sprint to open areas to accept passes, sprint to open areas to pull ball carriers to safety when they aren't smart enough to see a pass etc.

My only real complaints at the moment are that new Ilum is no better than old Ilum. The new ilum (at least on my server) still has no fighting, and it makes the daily incredibly tedious to get. The old ilum had no fighting, but the daily was too easy. Neither were the right solution, but lets hope they find something soon so that Ilum just doesn't die out. On my server, the republic are so badly outnumbered, that basically no one on the republic side even tries to complete their daily. The Empire is basically left to collect these stupid boxes all day, or hope a few unknowing Republic players stroll into Ilum unaware of the faction imbalance.

A lot of the things I didn't like are actually being changed in upcoming patches such as the change to top end gear mods. They advertised this "Orange Armor" system to allow you to look like whatever you want and still have great stats, but the part they left out is where you are gimped because you have to use 51 grade armorings instead of the 56 or 58 armorings that your PVP/PVE Raid gear has. Apparently from what I have heard, they are going to allow you to take out item armorings from these PVP and Raid gear and allow you to slot them into any orange items you want.

my experience in warzones is sentinel/maurader are top damage 90% of the time. This is contrary to all the bitching about how the class is underpowered (something I've never noticed as a 50 sentinel combat spec'd from level 10)

I rarely do warzones, but when I do I've never been outside top 3 damage.

could just be the server though

You can take out the 56 mods right now anytime you want, same way as any other mod. I do it alot because I prefer +critical over +power, and sentinel only gets 1 choice with columni/rakata/tionese, and they are switched in which pieces are spec'd for critical or power.

so for instance, my columni legs have power mod/enchancement where as tionese/rakata has critical - I can't get rakata yet, but I took out the mods in the columni and replaced with the ones I had in my tionese (bit of a stat drop but meh, not too bad). Alternatively the columni helm already has critical same as boots, and gloves are power again..

Yeah. I got my 4th set of Champion Leggings yesterday. So I got some leggings and ripped the Mod and Enhancement slots out of them and slotted them into my orange hat. It helped quite a bit for stats.

Apparently they have said that they are going to be allowing you to remove all slots from Purple items (including the Armoring mods) which will mean you can wear PVP stat gear in basically any orange gear that you want.
