Sorry if a thread just like this has already been made. I just want to see what other MMOs failed to fill EQ's shoes for you guys.

My first mmo was EQ and since then I have basically played every fantasy mmorpg that has been released with any considerable hype to it. Some I played for one week and some for a couple years. None compare to Classic EQ...none. Following EQ I played...
(this is all random order)
DAoC
LoTR
Final Fantasy Online
EQ2
City of Heroes
WoW
Diablo 2
Runescape (a little over 3 minutes, if that)
Star Wars Galaxies
Shadow Bane
Age of Conan
Warhammer Online
Aion

I feel like I'm missing a couple but that is the majority for sure.

EQ through GoD(ish - I stopped paying attention after awhile), followed by
CoHeroes for about a year, followed by
EQ2 through its first expansion, followed by
LoTRO (from alpha through Moria), concurrent with
WoW (came in at Burning Crusade, only stopped recently),
a very brief flirtation with Star Trek Online

How was Vanguard? I wanted it be like EQ in many aspects, but when it released I heard it was no where ready and didn't end up buying it.

EQ
Diablo 2
Vanguard
WoW
EQ2
Age of Conan

Vanguard was pretty cool, it was nowhere near ready to be released when it was. Even so, it was very fun, in my opinion. From what I hear now, it has made a ton of progress and is quite good now. I keep meaning to resub and try it for a month again.

Personally, Vanguard is right after EQ on my list of favorite games. It offered a huge world, diverse races and unique classes and that's all I'm really asking. I play pretty casually(maybe ten hours a week if I'm lucky) so I could've played Vanguard for a long while and not run out of content, unfortunately the friends I was playing it with left and I with them, always thinking I'd come back when the game was a little more polished, and then the population just fell right out.

Honestly, with all its naive ambition I think Vanguard did more to set back the MMO industry than WoW, even. I don't think we'd see as many WoW-Clones if Vanguard hadn't failed so miserably in its attempt to provide an alternative, and I don't mean they failed in making a fun game, merely that they failed commercially, and spectacularly.

^ Nah, the raid content was all jacked up. Ended up just being a zergfest, but the power armor was pretty dope.

EQ - Great game, many years of raiding, Velious was my favorite
DAoC - Good game, liked the RvR but didn't end up doing any end game PvE if there even was any
Matrix Online - Some friend duped me into playing this, lasted maybe a day, it sucked
Warhammer Online - Pretty decent, but it literally just came out when I played it so there wasn't much content besides PvP which got old after awhile
EQ2 - I thought it would relive the glory days of EQ, I was wrong
WoW - Great game, many years of raiding as well, but content was dumbed down too much, revival of Naxx into some sandbox raid instance was the last straw

edit: I forgot Diablo 2!!! Can't believe I left it out, twas a great game as well. Looking forward to D3!

I played all the major mmorpg's also.

EQ online adventures for ps2 is soooo underrated. Game was awesome! Almost as good as eq classic! The one expansion for eqoa was not as good as the original game. Wow is 3rd on my list to put it in perspective. If EQoa would of been a pc title WoW might of had some competition. They over estimated that console/playstation players would pay a monthly fee and buy the hd/ keyboard/network adapter. Eqoa came out the time we quit Eq pop era 2002. It is still running but hasn't had a patch in over a year.

There's a whole crap ton I can't rightly recall atm, I've dabbled a lot in the free to play spectrum of the MMO market, most are crap but there is some good ones.

I'd probably still be playing AO but the system I'm using currently has a on board video card that's 100% incompatible with the game.

Hell, I played D&D too. Started with the First editions, to boxed sets etc.

I did prefer the Iron Crown Enterprises Rolemaster gaming system because it was more defined, and left less up to the DM.

Rolemaster has gone through several revisions, but the original still beat out the D&D ruleset in my book.

ICE, ICE baby.

I think I can out-oldschool most of you. ;) Not strictly MMOs, but all in the same lineage imo...

Zork I, II, III
Ultima III
...
D&D (yeah, moster manual, all that stuff)
Hack/NetHack - classic!
...
Diablo
Diablo II
EQ starting 9/99, and now still going in P1999!
AC (beta)
VG (beta)
WoW

Favorites...
1 - EQ
2 - D&D
3 - tough one - probably about a 10-way tie
