I remember a handful of people pulling Phinny to zone in Kedge Keep and getting banned for it. Not necessarily true. Only reason I'm not playing online poker is because of the shutdown in America and not wanting to move. I have plenty of friends still making 6 figure incomes playing online poker in various countries, Canada mainly. Each of them plays a varying amount, depending on their ability to table select, multitable, and what stakes they are playing. Missing a month or even playing only 3-4 tables while leveling is very possible. When I played on VZTZ I played poker while leveling, raids, etc - made a little more than "rent and keeping the electricity on" too, it paid for graduate school. I don't doubt others being able to do the same.

Granted, a modest 6 figure income isn't exactly world beating - but it is respectable for the time, effort, and education required. Most either don't invest (wisely) or they are making a living for a family and live off a strict budget. I know one guy who plays 8 hours 5 days a week grinding away with 12+ tablea and makes right at 100k - 2 kids, wife, mortgage, etc. He treats it like any other job. Another friend of mine plays day to day only when good games are going. Parties more than anyone I know but table selects at higher stakes like a champ and doesn't put in near the hours as my other friend.

It may not produce a tangible good to society, but poker players provide a service the same as any casino, dog track, etc.
