View Full Version : HOW-TO: Play Project 1999 on a Mac
Avatar

Derubael's note: Another user has created a youtube video explaining Mac setup for Project 1999. If you would prefer those instructions, they can be found here. (http://youtu.be/_xfNbEUVweM)
Even though I'm new here, I've already come across some of the familiar "How can I play on my Mac?" requests. The replies usually follow the same pattern: One person suggests buying Crossover Games. Someone else suggests installing and configuring a Wine port. Another person suggests installing Windows into a VM, or using Bootcamp. And then there's the inevitable troll who belittles you for choosing a Mac to begin with. :rolleyes:
In response, I thought it might be useful to put together a downloadable Wine wrapper that requires only minimal configuration to get Project 1999 up and running on your Mac. This requires no additional installations since Wine is embedded in the wrapper. Note that EQ itself is NOT included in this download.
Note that you MUST play in Windowed Mode for my method to work. Playing in Fullscreen mode seems to cause the mouse cursor to stick in the middle of the screen. Feel free to tinker with the settings however, and report your findings!
Here's the skinny, so listen up. As I already mentioned, this wrapper download DOES NOT include any Everquest files at all. You have to bring your own EQ installation to this party. If you've already got a copy of EQEmu running on a Windows install somewhere, then a simple copy and paste will get you started. Otherwise you need to purchase the compatible install discs (EQ Titanium, etc.).
Ideally, you've already set up EQEmu and can connect to Project 1999.
Another important note is that I've only tested this on my personal Mac. It's a mid-2010 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.7.2 (Lion). My video card is an Nvidia 330M. I can't vouch for any Macs running ATI cards, but I'd love to hear your results. I used the copy/paste method from a Windows machine and haven't fully tested installation from CD. Again, I'd love to hear your results.
**A great tip for any Windows users would be to run EQ and set all the graphic options where you want them BEFORE you copy over to your Mac. Be sure to set the game to run in Windowed mode and choose a Window size that will fit comfortably on your Mac's screen resolution. This will eliminate a few of the steps below. Again, be sure that your EQ installation is already set up to work with EQEmu and Project 1999.
UPDATE: Phobus has created alternate instructions for installing Project1999 from scratch. http://www.project1999.org/forums/showpost.php?p=544877&postcount=37 **Download the updated Wine Wrapper from below instead of the one linked in Phobus' post**
STEPS
1. Download the Project 1999 Wine Wrapper from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?ltz58wddkaf30eh (Updated 2-12-12: CoreFonts added to package)
2. Extract the app into your Applications folder
3. Right click on the Project 1999 app and choose "Show Package Contents"
4. Inside the Package, you should see three things. A folder name "Contents", a shortcut named "drive_c", and a program named "Wineskin".
5. Copy your EQEmu installation into the "drive_c" shortcut folder. I didn't put it inside of "Program Files" just to keep the path short and sweet.
(If you are not copying/pasting, skip to Step 7 to see notes on installing from CD)
6. Rename your freshly copied EQ folder to "P99" (for the purposes of this tutorial). So far, your window should match the screenshot below:
http://i.imgur.com/6xbKH.png
7. Now it's time to launch "Wineskin"
(If installing EQ from CD, first select "Install Windows Software" and load the setup file from the CD in the following window. Install EQ into C:\P99 and then come back when install is complete and you have configured it for EQEmu.)
UPDATE: Phobus has created alternate instructions for installing Project1999 from scratch. http://www.project1999.org/forums/showpost.php?p=544877&postcount=37
**Download the updated Wine Wrapper in Step 1 of this post instead of the one linked in Phobus' post**
http://i.imgur.com/g6umY.png
8. Choose "Advanced"
9. The Windows EXE path should say "/P99/eqgame.exe". Verify that this path is valid. If you named your EQ folder something else, then replace the "P99" with that name. If you installed inside of Program Files, then be sure to add that to the path.
10. EXE Flags should say "patchme", otherwise EQEmu will not launch.
http://i.imgur.com/t4bvE.png
11. Click "Done" and then "Quit". That should be all the configuration you need to verify for the Wineskin application.
Set Windowed Mode in eqclient.ini
12. Next, navigate into your P99 installation folder and open eqclient.ini. The in-game Options tool works somewhat, but to create custom resolutions, you'll have to edit the ini file directly.
13. Be sure to set "WindowedMode=TRUE" and define your Window Size using the [VideoMode] settings. Since it MUST run in a Window, you'll want to select a size that is slightly smaller than your full resolution. This way the OS X menubar and dock won't get in the way. In the screenshot below, I am using a 1280x800 window on a 1440x900 desktop. I ended up settling on a 1400x800 window to fill the screen up more.
14. Save the eqclient.ini and then close all your open Finder windows. Navigate to your Applications folder and launch Project 1999!
**The first time you run, it may crash when you click Accept on the EULA. Relaunching seems to fix this as I was not asked again to Accept.
Enjoy playing Project 1999 on your Mac!

Confirmed Working Systems
Please post your specs if you have success setting this up.
2011 Macbook Pro i7 2.2 GHz with a AMD Radeon HD 6750M card
Mid-2010 Macbook Pro - OS X 10.7.2 - Nvidia 330M
Mid-2009 MacBook (2.13 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) - OS X 10.6 / 10.7 - Nvidia 9400M
Macbook Pro (2.4GHz) - OS X 10.7.2 - Nvidia 8600M GT
2007 Mac Book pro, intel 2.2 core duo, 2G ram, GeForce 8600 GT
Late-2006 iMac - OS X 10.6.8 - Radeon X1600
iMac (2.4Ghz core 2 duo) - Unknown OS and Video Card
Got it set up, but the graphics don't seem to be registering. It's just a mumble of black/pink lines and shit. I can press buttons around and get to the options though and when it says to select your video card nothing comes up.
Any idea what went wrong?
OSX 10.5.8
It's a mini mac with graphics Intel GMA 950
I know it's integrated graphics but it ran WoW, it's just not detecting the graphics or something.

Got it set up, but the graphics don't seem to be registering. When I open EQ it's just a jumble of pink and black lines with the warning text from the EULA all fucked up - can't even see the EULA.
Any idea what went wrong?
Make sure the color, bit depth, refresh rate, and resolution of the game and wineskin options are all the same as - or a coherent multiple of - your desktop settings.
Yeah, will check those settings in a bit. I'm a macnoob so learning as I go, no idea how to even access half the things lol.

The in-game Options menu doesn't detect my 330M either, but I could still click Next and set character models, etc. I'd definitely recommend going through the eqclient.ini file and lowering as many graphic options as possible.
Just out of curiosity, did you copy the EQ directory over or install it from disc?
I installed it from disc. Just noticing now that my eq folder size is a few gigs bigger than hers and the eqclient.ini file has ton more things - hers only had like 8 or 9 lines in it and I had to manually add the windowed mode.
I'm going to try copying it from my computer to hers.
Ok, so I reinstalled from the beginning, made sure everything was according to the directions step by step. This time I copied it from my computer and edited the eqclient and everything beforehand.
Same thing. I get the black screen with pink lines and it says E U L A. Definitely a graphical error. Now, I closed it and tried to open it again... and it won't even open. It bounces up and down retarded-like then the icon sits still and I get nothing opening.

You need to open up Wineskin and kill the process in the Advanced settings (or just reboot the computer).
I don't have a system running 10.5.8 to do any tests... I get the feeling it may be due to older drivers. You may want to try changing the engine from WS8WineCXG10.x to one of the older WS8WineCXG9.x engines. Shot in the dark.
Sometimes changing the engine will screw up the whole wrapper though, so you may want to make a copy of it before trying.

Yes.. bootcamp works fine. This thread is about using it with wine.

Nice, thanks for this!
I just installed it following your instructions and it works great. I'm using a late-2006 iMac with the Radeon X1600 running 10.6.8. I had been running EQ under a Parallels VM, which is alright but this seems faster.
I did run into one issue: the stock fonts were horrible. I did some digging around, and was able to fix it:
- Open Wineskin, and go to the Tools tab
- Click the Winetricks button
- Under fonts, check the box for corefonts
- Click the Run button
- Once it's done downloading and installing, close Winetricks
- Click the "Kill Wineskin Processes" button and restart the P99 Wine wrapper
Now you should have the expected in-game fonts.

Working awesome for me:
Macbook Pro 2.4GHz 15"
4GB 667 ram
Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
on OSX Lion 10.7.2
My only issue is the text of my ui is a bit ugly. Font issue, I'm sure. The normal text fonts for chat are just fine.
Thanks for the hard work!
Dave
EDIT:
Copied the fonts from c:\windows\fonts to the c drive shortcut\windows\fonts and the fonts are perfect for mobs and menus, etc. Any idea how to show exactly which font was needed? That was 635mb of fonts. :P

I just successfully installed P99 onto a 13" mid-2009 MacBook
2.13 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 800 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256MB
Mac OSX 10.6
I opened EQ on my windows machine, set all the display settings the way I would want them on my macbook. Closed EQ. Installed the zip file from the OP to my applications folder, transferred my EQ folder to the P99 package as instructed. Renamed the folder from Everquest to P99. Verified the settings. Opened the program with no trouble except for the aforementioned font issue.
I then UPDATED TO LION FROM 10.6 and after the updated P99 still ran just fine.
--
I then installed P99 onto an iMac:
2.4Ghz core 2 duo, 3GB 667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM -- Runs fine except the font issue.
--
Followed Phobus' steps to correct the font issue. Now my P99 is running on both macs with correct fonts, and they are both running great. In fact it runs a lot faster than my PC did.
THANK YOU!!!!

First of all, to the OP, thanks for the great post. It's really hard to find any current resources regarding EQ and OSX.
Now, I'm sorry this doesn't exactly pertain to P99, but does anyone have current-day EQ running in OSX?
I'm using an early 2010 MBP, Radeon HD 6750m, 8GB ram, i7 2.2Ghz running OSX Lion 10.7.2
I've followed the tutorial completely, but every time I try to run it with my setup, I get a crash with eqgame.exe. If I set the target to EverQuest.exe instead, the patcher will launch and update files okay, but then after clicking login I get the same error. I assume it has something to do with the different client files, but I haven't yet been able to find a fix. Works 100% fine in Boot Camp, I'm just a lazy bastard and don't wanna reboot to play!
This is all I get:

For you guys who suddenly have a black sky, and maybe other things that don't render, you are missing files in your Resources directory.
It seems like when you copy a folder over an existing folder in OS X, rather than merging the contents of both, you replace the old one (and all its contents) with the new.
In other words, when you copied Resources from eqchangesv20.zip, you wiped out all the existing stuff under that folder and were left with just the new GlobalLoad.txt.
This isn't really what I was expecting to happen. Luckily, I had a backup and was able to just add the new files to that, and that fixed my sky rendering issues.

I had the black sky issue as well. I followed Phobus' advice and I was indeed missing a bunch of files from the Resources folder. For reference, you should see a couple of folders in there. One is named "Sky". If you're missing yours, you probably have the same problem. I just re-ran the installer and did a Repair and it added the files back. If you do it this way, you'll want to go through all the EQEMU/Project 1999 steps again because some of the files will get reverted back to the original.
Also, don't be a doofus like me and forget to change the sky setting in options back to "Simple" or "Complex" after you do this.

I'd love to try and help you guys, but the power suppply in my Mac blew up a couple days ago and I'm waiting on a replacement.
In the meantime, though, I can tell you that most of the issues I've run into with the game not starting properly stemmed from windowed mode not being set correctly in eqclient.ini. For starters, open that file in a text editor and see that you have lines that look like this:
WindowedMode=TRUE
WidthWindowed=1024
HeightWindowed=768
WindowedWidth=1024
WindowedHeight=768
If the height/width numbers are different, that's probably fine. Any resolution you want should work. I think all that matters is that both resolutions match, and that WindowedMode is set to true.

Hi everyone. Sorry I've not been around to help field questions. I had some RL issues come up that have kept me fairly restricted. I'll update the thread soon with a new version to download (with core fonts installed) and I will also update the compatibility list.
Special thanks to Phobus for being so helpful here! He seems to be much more knowledgeable on troubleshooting this stuff than I am anyway. :)

Okay, so I did some troubleshooting today to see if I could figure out why people were having problems on new installs. For some reason, when you run EQ for the first time under WINE, it doesn't create an eqclient.ini. Those of us who copied an existing install were unaffected, but anyone trying to do a fresh install crashed. It seems you can get started by creating a barebones eqclient.ini with only the following:
[Defaults]
WindowedModeXOffset=1
WindowedModeYOffset=1
WindowedMode=TRUE
[VideoMode]
Width=1024
Height=768
WidthWindowed=1024
HeightWindowed=768
WindowedWidth=1024
WindowedHeight=768
FullscreenBitsPerPixel=32
FullscreenRefreshRate=0
While I was at it, I documented the steps to do a new install from the discs under WINE. Here's the minimum of what you need to do to run EQ under Mac OS X using Avatar's WINE wrapper:
If this is your first time setting up Project 1999, complete steps 2 and 3 (only!) on http://www.eqemulator.net/wiki/wikka.php?wakka=PlayGuide to setup your accounts.
Download the Project 1999 Wine Wrapper from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?ltz58wddkaf30eh
Extract the app into your Applications folder
Right click on the Project 1999 app and choose "Show Package Contents." Inside the Package, you should see three things. A folder name "Contents", a shortcut named "drive_c", and a program named "Wineskin".
Open Wineskin.
Click the button that says “Install Windows Software”
Insert disc 1 of Everquest Titanium, or if you backed up your discs to ISO files, double-click the first one and it’ll mount on your desktop.
Navigate to disc 1 and choose setup.exe.
Follow the installation instructions. When prompted for a destination to install to, change it from the default to C:\P99.
Continue following the installation instructions, inserting/mounting the next disc when prompted.
Once the install is complete, Wineskin will ask you for the main executable. Make sure eqgame.exe is selected and click OK.
Choose “Advanced”
The Windows EXE path should say "/P99/eqgame.exe". Verify that this path is valid. If you named your EQ folder something else, then replace the "P99" with that name. If you installed inside of Program Files, then be sure to add that to the path.
EXE Flags should say "patchme", otherwise EQEmu will not launch.
Click the Tools tab.
Click the Winetricks button.
Under fonts, click the checkbox next to corefonts.
Click the Run button. When prompted if you wish to run Winetricks, click Run.
When it’s done, click Close.
Click "Done" and then "Quit". That should be all the configuration you need to verify for the Wineskin application.
Go back to the Finder window where you were looking inside the Project 1999 package. Open the the drive_c shortcut, and then navigate to your P99 folder. Remove (drag to the trash) the following files:
arena.eqg
arena_EnvironmentEmitters.txt
lavastorm.eqg
nektulos.eqg
Nektulos_EnvironmentEmitters.txt
Download and extract http://www.project1999.org/files/P99Files30.zip (if this link does not work, go to http://www.project1999.org, download the latest patch, and continue with these instructions. Also, PM me a reminder to update this post:)). Copy the following files into your P99 folder. You will be asked if you wish to replace the existing files; say yes.
dbstr_us.txt
dsetup.dll
eqhost.txt
spells_us.txt
spellsnew.eff
Copy Resources/GlobalLoad.txt and Resources/loadscreen.jpg from that zip file into your Resources folder, replacing the existing files. DO NOT just copy the Resources folder from the zip file. You will overwrite your existing Resources folder and lose a bunch of needed files, and you will have to start over from the beginning.
Copy everything from within the uifiles/default folder of that zip file to the uifiles/default folder within your P99 folder, replacing any existing files.
Open TextEdit and paste the following:
[Defaults]
WindowedModeXOffset=1
WindowedModeYOffset=1
WindowedMode=TRUE
[VideoMode]
Width=1024
Height=768
WidthWindowed=1024
HeightWindowed=768
WindowedWidth=1024
WindowedHeight=768
FullscreenBitsPerPixel=32
FullscreenRefreshRate=0
Under the Format menu, choose “Make Plain Text.” Save it to your P99 folder (easy way to avoid having to rifle through your system: in Finder, drag one of the files in the P99 folder to TextEdit’s Save As window), and save it as eqclient.ini. Make sure “hide extension” is unchecked.
That should get you into the game. I also suggest installing the updated textures from here (http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2482) as well as replacing the loading and login server screens with Classic versions from here (http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2651). Of course, you can also install any custom UI you want.
All you guys having issues with black screens, crashing on startup, etc. please try installing from scratch using these instructions and let us know the results. Good luck. =)

Everything is running pretty good for me, except that the game (or Wine) will not trap my mouse cursor so when I mouse look, it only will work for so long until I it drags outside of the Wine window. I've tried sizing the window to the same size as my desktop resolution however it has no effect. I can't seem to find any Wineskin tweaks for this. Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem; I never actually see the mouse cursor, but it does stop me from panning in one direction after a while, as if the mouse cursor had reached the edge of the screen. I still have enough room to spin around a few times, so it's never really bothered me.

I now have a sky, weather, and a brighter game. I increased the gamma through the wineskin options after correcting my resource folder.
Everything seems to be working great! Thanks again!
How did you manage to change the gamma through wineskin? The game is soo dark -_-
Works pretty well except for:
Sound only turns on or off, slider does nothing.
Using mouselook, the game stops at 180 degrees. This could potentially be fixed with MouseWarpOverride settings in Winetricks but I remember the outcome being that your mouse cursor cannot be released after pressing right click so I wouldn't do it unless you'd like to prove me wrong.
Game is incredibly dark, gamma setting in-game does nothing.
f keys will only activate the shortcut they're assigned to (volume up/down etc) and using the function key does not work.

Heya,
I got this working on my 2007 Mac Book pro, intel 2.2 core duo, 2G ram, GeForce 8600 GT. It's really nifty and thanks for the good work! Now its just like eq mac, except on an authentic classic server! My one comment is that it seems to run slow in a weird way. the framerate is fine, but its like my toon runs slower, casts slower, even jumps slower, than on my PC. For instance, when casting a spell, the casting time slider will go down slower than on my PC, and the spell will actually land with the slider still not finished yet - as though the server knows it should land then, but my end is displaying things too slowly! Anyone else get this? Anything to do about it?
thanks

Oh, could this be a dual-core issue? Says "slow movement" can be a symptom of it in the other thread.

It wouldn't hurt to try, there's a dual core fix option in there. I thought that was mostly characterized by warping/intense moments of speed but you should definitely try it. :)

OSX 10.5.8

I know it's integrated graphics but it ran WoW, it's just not detecting the graphics or something.
Taken from WineHQ, there is something wrong with (linux+wine+eq) that I fixed related to graphics bugs... you could try this and see if it fixes it.

In Game Options
You must change some options in eqclient.ini in order to run the game properly. If a setting is missing, like TextureCache, just enter it into the appropriate section. If you use the default file, VertexShaders are already TRUE, but so is TextureCache which needs to be FALSE.
- You can log into any zone you have previously zoned into and also any small zone like the guild lobby. If you log into one that you have never been in before, you get fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_CreateVertexBuffer Out of memory! (TextureCache)
- If your first toon on char select is a Drakkin, the animation is broken except for the primary and secondary weapons/shield move. If you select any other character at char select, the game crashes. (TextureCache)
- Game crashes at char select. (VertexShaders)
[Defaults]
VertexShaders=TRUE
TextureCache=FALSE

any idea on how to multibox with that set up ?
falkun
02-08-2012, 02:01 PM
Multi-boxing doesn't exist on this server. You are IP restricted to 1 account per server per IP for P99 & R99 (so you can play one character on P99 and one character on R99 concurrently, but not 2 accounts on the same server). If you have another real life person on the same IP as you, such as a roomate or spouse, apply for an IP exemption in the Petitions & Exploit (http://www.project1999.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25) forum, following the IP exemption request (http://www.project1999.org/forums/announcement.php?f=25) guidelines. Once you have an IP exemption, there are also repercussions for being caught multi-boxing.
TL;DR: Play 1 character at a time on P99/R99.

In that case, I would recommend you connect with the EQEmu community for more general information. Since you posted on P99/R99 forums, I assumed you wanted to multibox on these servers. Here is the EQEmu homepage (http://eqemulator.org/index.php). If you drill down into Server List (http://eqemulator.org/index.php?pageid=serverlist) and then select "View" under View Information column (The Hidden Forest Example (http://eqemulator.org/index.php?pageid=serverinfo&worldid=792)), you will find the homepage for the specific server you wish to multibox on. You may also ask your question in the Forums section of EQEmu (http://www.eqemulator.org/forums/index.php). Those are more appropriate places to ask about multiboxing on other EQEmu servers.

This thread is getting to the point where it may need to be rebuilt and expanded into two threads:
Installing P99 on a Mac
Troubleshooting P99 on a Mac
If only to keep the information organized and easy to follow. It still is if you read the thread from start to finish, but it would be nice to have it in a pretty presentation.
I will post instructions on increasing gamma through wine.
I will also post instructions on how to use wine to simulate a three button mouse with a single button mouse. IE: OSx allows you to use control, option, and command but EQ does not using the default installation instructions.
I work support for a software company, so I could probably do this for the community.
Phobus and Avatar if it is okay with you for me to repost your work (with credit of course) I will do so.

Since Crossover Games is based on WINE, shouldn't the performance be pretty close to other programs like wineskin?

Hello all!
Just to add my experience with this too. Just found that thread about it, but I'm using that easy way to play EQ on all my Mac.
Already used Virtual PC (with Vmware Fusion) to play Everquest, was pretty easy and worked perfectly since last Fusion update so switched to this.
Now using Wine and everything is perfect to me.
You can add my configuration to your list:
-iMac, early 2009
-3,06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
-OS X Lion 10.7.3
-NVDIA GeForce GT 130
and
-MacBook Pro, mid 2009
-2,8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
-OS X Lion 10.7.3
-NVIDIA Geforce 9600M GT
Just have a question for user of this method: anyone knows how to enable the auction tracker from Tristantio (ahungry.com/eqauctions) with Wine? Would like to continue to contribute to that :)
Thx all and happy hunting in Norrath!

Hi All,
I am having the following "problem", which seems to me is my inability to see something simple: I can run EQ excellently given that it's the first run following the steps provided on the first page. However, after quitting the program (Project 1999 via the Applications Menu), it will bounce in my dock when I try to start it again until the application no longer responds (and requires a "force quit").
Things I've Tried
(1) Killing All Wine Processes
(2) Restarting the Computer
Again, everything is working great. Indeed, I can even make things work again if I unzip the Project 1999 wineskine and copy/paste the EverQuest folder back with my current settings into the freshly unzipped skin. I merely wish I could run the program a second and third time without repeating all the initial steps.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Alright so I can launch the Project1999 app, I log in, select my character, then while it is loading it says my client may have crashed. I did all the steps you said yet I am still having trouble getting into the game. I have tried logging in with multiple characters but nothing works, any advice?
Also I tried installing the latest update files that are on the project1999 homepage, but it won't me me extract to the P99 folder. The only way I know how to access that folder is buy right clicking on the Project 1999 app, but it is grayed out and won't let me. How do I extract these files to my P99 folder? Assuming that is the problem.

Mid-2010 17" MBP (330m, 2.53 GHz i5)
Anyone ever come up with a better fix for the mouse look thing? Drives me a bit nuts only having 180 degrees.
Well I rebottled wine with winery, used the latest engine & released versions... mouselook still stuck at 180. I applied the override force and yes, the mouse is just stuck in the center of the screen. disabling or enabling it doesn't change that you are locked at 180. I've seen several issues on the winehq forums but they all have been fixed (and I assume integrated into the latest Wine, which I just tested with)
So long story short, I can confirm p99 works on the latest Wine via WineSkin wrappers, but the mouselook (viewport stops turning after 180 degrees and you have to unclick, reclick and drag again for the next 180, rinse & repeat) issue still exists.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30473
I'm going to see about trying it in Cider or using the CX engine.
edit: Tested on CX11, mouselook issue still exists.
I suspect the mouse look issue has to do with running in window mode instead of fullscreen. Can anyone that has bootcamp or some
Method of running fullscreen see if when they go window mode their mouse look stops when they get to the edge of the screen instead of continuing?

Under the Format menu, choose “Make Plain Text.” Save it to your P99 folder (easy way to avoid having to rifle through your system: in Finder, drag one of the files in the P99 folder to TextEdit’s Save As window), and save it as eqclient.ini. Make sure “hide extension” is unchecked.
When I uncheck "hide extension" it automatically adds .txt to it... Is there a way to prevent this?

You can just change the ".txt" part of the filename to ".ini". At least, I can. If you can't for some reason, save it as whatever and then just rename it in Finder. Make sure the file extension isn't hidden, though, or that will change what the actual filename is as far as EQ is concerned.
Once you have your eqclient.ini setup properly, the game should load. I think the reason it's crashing for you is that the file doesn't exist.

Should I delete the original eqclient.ini?
Sure, there's really no harm in that. All you should need to be able to run the game for the first time is an eqclient.ini with the barebones settings I listed in my post. Once the game runs for the first time, it'll write out its own version with its full list of settings.
The important thing is that the true filename is "eqclient.ini". If your OS thinks the file should have a .txt extension and is hiding that from you, you might think it's named eqclient.ini when in fact it's really eqclient.ini.txt, and the game won't see it. You can click on the file in Finder and use File -> Get Info to check on this. Look under "Name & Extension".

My compass is all over the place... Has anyone had experience with this?
Crazycompass is probably due to your sense heading skill being very, very low. Mine doesn't dance around, but that may be the UI I'm using? Not sure. I think it's normal, though.
phobus
07-01-2012, 09:31 PM
Level your sense heading. :)
Once it's maxed, the compass will always be accurate. Until then, any time you're able to successfully sense your heading, your compass will work for a short time and then it'll start to go crazy again.
You can level it quickly by creating an extra hotbutton bar with a bunch of sense heading buttons. Then go into your key bindings in-game and add all your commonly-used keys (the ones bound for movement, auto-attack, etc) as bindings for those buttons. It'll warn you that the key is bound to more than one action, but that's what you want. Now whenever you hit one of those keys, you'll attempt to use sense heading (if it's not cooling down) as well as do the normal action for that key. Train a couple points to get started (those first 20 or so points take forever to get) and you'll have it maxed around level 10.

Now when I launched P99 on a windows it ran the patch for me every time... but on my mac it does not run any patch for me automatically - I must have to do this manually? How do I go about doing this if so?

No, the opposite. Came back from break and EQclient didn't start after patching with EQEmulauncher. Copied a vanilla copy in and patched manually.
Everything working perfectly now. Just running a bit slow. Guess i have to look into the multi core problem.

P99 was running fine on my Macbook Pro 10.7.2 install.
After upgrading to Mountain Lion (10.8.2) it will not start and I have to force quit. Beware :/
I have the same problem with 10.8.2. It worked fine with shipped OS, but after latest update it stopped working. I am thinking about install it again to see if it were one of the patches that made the problem

The issue has to do with Wineq. You need to upgrade it to 2.5.8 I believe. I'm not at home to check but I think that's correct.

Did a quick search on wineq turned up almost nothing. If we have to update it, how is it done? I think most of us downloaded the wine package and followed the steps. So kinda clueless at this point on how to update it.

I think he meant Wineskin.app (inside Project 1999.app) needs to be updated. I used Wineskin Winery (http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads) to update it. The engine I updated to: WS9WineCX11.2.0 with the wrapper: Wineskin 2.5.8. After updating these two things and launching Project 1999.app it worked just fine again.
thank you, that was it. Updated and all work again.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get the game to run at normal speed?
Everything works running it in my Mac, but I move way slower. Similar to the multicore proc issue in windows. Is there a way to run the wine instance single core?
Edit: disregard. There is an option in Wineskin -> Advanced -> Options to force single core.
Anyone have an issue with the mouse look? I feel like I turn 90 degrees to the left and it just stops there... have the let go of mouse button and try to force it to turn 180 degrees (if that makes sense...)...

Yeah, it's a known bug: see here (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29844). Supposedly it's fixed if you use wine 1.5.11 or later, and Xquartz instead of the X11 server included with Wineskin. I played with that last week and it seemed to still have the same bug (as well as some texture issues). I haven't had time to try and do any more troubleshooting.

If you have a working eqclient.ini you can use that.

Dragging and dropping is fine to copy the files over. But don't drag and drop folders; the contents of the destination folder will be removed and replaced with what you dragged. P99 updates only include the new files, so you have to make sure those are updated without losing any of the existing files.

Up before today, I have never touched wine, wineskin, winery, or any other type of "wine" program.
That being said, I have carefully read and followed the instructions on Phobus' post and the Project1999 program seems to not want to open. I checked the eqclient.ini file and it definitely doesn't have the .txt extension. Other than winery/wineskin, do I have to download some other type of wine program?
EDIT- Updating Wineskin did the trick.

I have a 2008 Macbook. I have tried installing and reinstalling with all the correct steps. Once I get in and select my server, the game tries to load(not showing the background picture, just the loading bar with its text) and once it gets to character select I can see the UI buttons but no background or character. At this point its crashes. Any help?
I have also Updated the Wineskin Wrapper to 2.5.8 and the engine to WS9CX11.2.0 and the same problem still exists.
After a full reinstall, after Wineskin was updated, the game now loads into the character select. Now it says my spell files are out of date. I have downloaded the newest spells files according to the page http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=84589&highlight=patch+info

I seem to encounter a problem similar to those posted before--when I attempt to open "Project 1999" it bounces on the dock and needs to be "Force Quit"ted. The apparent solution to this problem was to update Wineskin, but when I go to Advanced>>Tools>>Update Wrapper, I am presented with the following error notice:
"There is an error with the installation of your Master Wrapper. Please update your Wrapper in Wineskin Winery (a manual install of a wrapper for Wineskin Winery will work too)"
Any idea what I've done wrong/how to fix this? Thanks.

I experienced the "nothing happens" thing just today. After various attempts to work through the problem, I finally go to the message you've indicated, telling me I cannot update the Wineskin. I looked online and found the "Wineskin Winery" application, made for Mac, installed it. I updated the "Installed Engines" box with "WS8WineCX11.0.0 (I also installed the engine our "project 1999 wrapper" claims it is using). I updated the second box "wrapper version" to the most current version.
This got me into the game and stopped the "non-action" i was getting for the most part of the day.

Please explain "goes to shit"? Using Linux, the issue I've been having with mouse-look is that I cannot continuously mouse-look. I can do X-degrees (I think somewhere around 140deg mouse-look turn), and then the turn angle locks and it switches over to zooming the camera in and out. I don't know why it does it, it didn't do it on Windows, and its annoying. I'd like to be able to perpetually mouse-look turn as long as I'm holding down the right mouse button. Is this the same issue you are having?

This is the same issue I am having, somewhat. On the OSX side I can mouselook left/right for about 180 degrees before my cursor leaves the EQ Window, which removes focus from it/requires me to reclick/restart mouselook.
I've noticed that the x degrees is tied to width of the EQ window and also to the max FPS. Maxing EQ as wide as my monitor's native resolution and putting it down to 30 max fps allows me to turn 360+ degrees continuously, but still has the previously mentioned issue with anything past that.
edit: also the "mouse sensitivity" setting is tied to the amount of degrees. Low sensitivity = low degrees. I have mine at 100 which does not change the actually sensitivity of the mouse, heh

Yes. Sort of.
The only thing you need to be careful of is, if you copy one folder over another in Finder, everything in the existing folder will be removed and you will only have the contents of the new one.
Sometimes the patches include files with in the Resources folder, so you have to be careful otherwise you'll end up deleting stuff inadvertently.

Hey guys
newb here, I installed from these instructions on my rMPP. It works soso, I don't like the mouselook, so I tried it on parallels. It works better over there IMO.
what still gets me, and maybe this is just EQ behavior and I don't remember it, is sometimes I get into this wacky always mouselook state, which means while I am trying to loot I do this crazy nauseating disorienting spin and end up looking straight up.
Is there a way to make it never mouselook unless R Click is held down, or is this just a mac thing? I too am finding that when I get in this mode, sometimes I accelerate out of the window and lose focus too. It's a royal PITA.

wineskin winery is what was messed up. took a while to narrow that down. it wasnt pulling down new wine versions. i had to manually install them then update the wineskin in the package, works great now although i sometimes crash when zoning into high pop zones.
im also having an issue with mouselook that I haven't been able to resolve... the X axis look is effected by the mouselook sensitivity section but the Y axis is not

2. Extract the app into your Applications folder
I just got my mac air yesterday. I am not sure what step 2 means. I have copied the file to the applications folder. Before I got the entire eq directory copied over when I opened project 1999 it would open the wineskin options thing. Now that the entire eq directory is copied over from a working folder on my PC when I open project 1999 nothing really happens. If I try to open eqgame.exe with project 1999 nothing happens.
Not sure what to do. :confused:

That is what happened to her also. I think it has to do with the resolution. I think if you search resolution in this forum you might find something helpful. Again, if not resolved I'll get you help later today.

Not working on my brandnew Macbook Pro, did everything correctly from instructions. Copied my working EQEmu folder from my Win7 x64 desktop and when I try to run it, it puts it in the bottom bar and doesn't load anything. Going to sift through all of these posts I guess.
If anybody knows what the problem could be any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I updated Wineskin and still not working.

Do you *have* to update your wineskin?
On Ubuntu, I use a virtual drive with my P99 folder. If I update wine, I just move the pointer for P99 back to the virtual drive for P99 again.
You could also save your P99 folder to a different location (eg: USB), remove your wineskin, and reinstall (update to newest wineskin) and then move P99 back within your wineskin.

2013 macbook pro retina problem resolution.
At first I couldnt even get a window to open upon launching the program. This was fixed after updating the wineskin wrapper and engine
1 -- download http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads
-- get the latest engine and updates from the latest tool, then open the wineskin configured for EQ and update the wrapper and engine from the tools menu
2 -- get the updated textures http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2482
personal preference
3 -- install directx9 from wine tricks menu
required to get part the char select screen
4 -- use this in eqclient.ini:
[Defaults]
WindowedModeXOffset=1
WindowedModeYOffset=1
WindowedMode=TRUE
[VideoMode]
Width=1024
Height=768
WidthWindowed=1024

I understand most people want a wrapper to emulate Windows, but honestly, I have Bootcamped a separate SSD (swapped out the DVD drive for it - it's a fairly simple process), and am running "native" installs of both Windows 7 and OSX. As a gamer who also loves Macbook Pros, it's the only option IMO. Solves all the issues you guys are having here, and you get the best performance the machine is capable of as there is no overhead.
You can also just partition the default drive and Bootcamp the partition (Mac's Disk Drive utility is great and has no trouble with this).

Windows installations aren't always viable these days, especially when we are talking about precious SSD space.
This is naturally the ideal option if you aren't running one of the skinnier sized SSDs, but most models are shipping with SSDs and the most popular capacity is 128-256GB. Pile on your regular Mac applications, personal storage (photos, video, music), and the idea of devoting 60GB+ to Windows for a game installation becomes impossible to embrace.
I'm of course talking about default configuration machines, and you aren't running the default configuration. Many people aren't aware that you can retrofit a second drive in place of the superdrive in the standard Pro models. This of course, isn't even possible with the Air and Retina models, but I am quite positive that any MacBook model 2009+ can run this game.

Sounds like you are missing key files. I assume at some point you copy/pasted entire folders (either during original install or with patch items). Maybe you did it correctly with the patch file, but perhaps not with the original install.
1) Make sure you replace all of the files as outlined in the original post. Do NOT just copy over the folder, you have to go IN to the folder, copy the items, then copy them IN to the correct folder. Just copying over folders replaces entire contents (containing key files to run the game).
2) Once you have done that, repeat for the new patch files and folder (again, replacing contents within the folders, not replacing the folders by a simple copy/paste).
Start over. I made this mistake myself but doing it carefully a second time and it worked just fine.

If your sky's missing, you probably were not careful when applying the latest patch. In a nutshell, if you copy one folder over another in Finder, you will replace the old one rather than merge the contents of the two.
To safely apply the patch, you need to copy the contents of each folder separately.

Hello. I apologize if this isn't the proper place for my question. I do own a mac and like what this server has to offer. I played on the Al'kabor server for a brief spell but paused due to a hectic schedule. I'm excited about P99s classic environment and the player engagement it fosters.
The EQemu Mac installation guide here seems straightforward enough. However, finding a reasonably priced version of EQ Titanium seems presently unrealistic. I've internet searched and the results have been far and few between. The cheapest used price on Amazon is about $70ish. And I'm not sure about the viability of purchasing a used version from a private party. Since a downloaded version is unacceptable, I'm hoping someone here might be able to direct those of us needing the mega installation CD set to to an agreeable retail haven. :D
I normally would not post questions such as these but I've been hard pressed locating physical discs that aren't exorbitantly priced. :eek:
Thanks for your time, Salient

Any suggestions where I need to copy files from on my computer?

You need to install the most current Wine Engine. That solved this exact same problem for me. Also, update Wine itself, and update to the newest Winetricks before you use any. If you messed up starting over is really easy and recommended.

I'm pretty sure I did that. When I select the update wrapper function it alerts this message before asking if I want to force an update anyways.
"Your wrapper version matches the master wrapper version... no update needed. Do you want to force an update?"
Did you look at the numbers? Is there a later wrapper?
Not sure that it matters but I am running OSX 10.6.8.
Thanks. I will check the Wine site again to make sure I have the latest wrapper.

So the wrapper is the newest. I don't keep release versions in mein noggin.
Use the newest engine here (at time of post it's 1.7.4): http://www.mediafire.com/wineskin#u3ekk5q5y3fb1
If that link doesn't work, go to: http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php -> click "Downloads" in the box -> The find "Mediafire.com Wineskin download location" -> http://www.mediafire.com/wineskin -> find the newest one
*also download newest Winetricks from the advanced menu

I followed your great tutorial to the letter but unfortunately I ended up with the same black screen containing a rectangle of pink & white letters; but this time it didn't say EULA. I am on OSX 10.6.8 if it matters.
I did notice that in the UI folder of the wrapper mine has "default" and an "old default" folder, which yours did not contain. I tried temporarily moving the "old default" and starting the program but it was the same.
I really appreciate all the time and effort that many of you have given to help us Mac users out. I'll check back in when I have more time to dedicate to finding a fix.
Thanks again.

As a last note: As you may have observed, I am using a macbook pro but have a secondary monitor (Syncmaster) that I use as my main monitor. Not sure if the issue is truly graphics related but I thought it should be clarified if it's part of the equation.
Seem to be getting allot of these:
fixme:d3d:buffer_PreLoad Too many declaration changes or converting dynamic buffer, stopping converting
Thanks

Yo. In the video they clearly show that they are using the same outdated engine that you are using. You are on an older Mac, as am I.
I solved THE EXACT same issue you are having by upgrading the ENGINE, not the WRAPPER, to the most current version.
The dude that made the video above did not have this issue, so good for him. But I did, and you are now, and I posted several times on how I solved the issue.
I imagine since we are on similarly aged systems, this is an issue for us, and not the dude with the tutorial.
Use the wrapper download included at the beginning of this thread, and upgrade the engine as I have suggested. THIS IS A SEPARATE DOWNLOAD AND INSTALLATION PROCESS which I gave links to in a previous post (and you'll have to upgrade the wrapper too if you are starting fresh).
I got all of my tips from the WineSkin forums. They have a compatible gaming database. I cross referenced my errors with their current support forums for games to find glitch parallels.
After you install everything as I've instructed, come back and ask me how to get rid of the d3d lag issues, messed up pointer, how to upgrade the textures and whatever else you need.
I will be so happy if you can get him in the game, kingthumper. Thanks for helping.
Got this working on my 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo MiniMac on 10.6.8
Thanks for the great guide!

Followed the guide step by step and when I open the Project 1999 file it opens but never actually does anything.
I'm new to mac having only borrowed this computer from my family, and have only downloaded the files in this thread, do I need to download another program to emulate windows or should I be alright with only the files in this thread. As well as my EQ Titanium install.

In that case you need to click the download latest wrapper in your Wineskin, and also, as I mentioned about eight posts back...
--->>>Download the latest engine from the wine website.<<<---
When I made my build a month ago the latest engine was WS9Wine1.7.4 but I'm sure it's advanced because the developer's are in a state of rapid micro-updates solving one issue at a time. They're great, read their forums.
There are other things you'll need to tweek once you get it running. I posted links and more details in my previous posts.
Good luck doodz

Updating the wrapper from the Advanced Options -> Tools appears to have fixed my problems. Thank you
Thanks for the great guide! I managed to set everything up on a 13" Retina MacBook Pro.
I only have one issue/question. How do I change the default keyboard layout in Wine for EQ. Any help would be much appreciated.

If you're wondering about Wine's choice of key combos for right-click, center-click, etc., I believe it's hardwired into the software. ie The key choices can't be changed (at this time).
Here's their tech forums, I don't recall where I read the above bit but feel free to look around.

Thanks! My issue is that my Y and Z keys are switched. I suspect it's because Wine is loading qwerty keyboard layout instead of qwertz (which is my system default). I tried to search their forums with no luck.
