So I want to roll a chanter but i have no idea how they are in pvp. Are they viable in pvp? Also, i played a DE Necro from 1-50 and i was htinking of making this chanter a human due to the decent base stats of everything but int. How gimpy are human pure casters?

Anything other than a darkelf enchanter is a waste of time.
Hide $$$
Enchanter is good. Human is not so good. The groids are best, but HE DE and Gnome are playable. Statwise anyways. DE has hide for charming.

I've always made Enchanters. I've always been fascinated with charm.
For this reason my enchanters have been High elf with charisma maxxed.
A few things for exping with charm. It's now much more efficient to simply duo with a healer class than to attempt to solo. The inability to heal will slow you down, no matter how well you play.
On blue 99, a way to circumvent breaking your charm with invis was to simply duel your groupmate and have them kill the charm when the mob you are fighting gets low.
Pro strat:
charm 2 mobs, try and charm healing mobs as they wont heal themselves, let the mobs fight and hopfully your pet either wins with a sliver of life, or your pet is going to die, in which case, send in your duo partner druid/shaman/cleric to talk a few hits until the mob dies.
after the mob dies your pet should be a single nuke to death. Bam double xp.
On RED99 I made a human enchanter > looking far far ahead to Rod of Annihilation, the 60/40 one hand bashing wep. That +20 STR will be useful one day :)

solo pvp:
Early game enchanters are great, late game suck (all spells are MR based)
Group pvp:
-where they shine in late game.
