Boyfriend and I kind of went on a board / card game binge this weekend. Started with Monopoly, then Life, then poker, then Zombies!!! (http://www.twilightcreationsinc.com/en/boardgames/zombies.html) (Just picked it up this weekend, way fun), then me getting my ass severely kicked in Gin Rummy (http://www.rummyroyal.com/gin_rummy/), then Skip-Bo.

What kind of board games do you guys like? I'm not looking for more shit like Yahtzhee! or Monopoly. I remember back in Colorado they used to have these stores that sold collectible shit / model airplanes and stuff, but also had rows and rows of board games. I'm a big fan of stuff like Risk, Carcassonne, etc. Interested in finding more stuff like that. Suggestions?

You mentioned Risk, so I can only assume you want more from a strategy board game. If you're really serious about board games, and also like strategy, there is only one choice: Go. Go is the ultimate in strategy, and its longevity is testament to that fact. So many games have spawned from this most abstract of war games, but they are all pretenders, and do not offer anything close to the depth offered by Go.

Chess is good if you can memorize openings. You can also not memorize openings but be very good at mid- and end-game chess and be fairly good, but you will never be as consistent and able to beat noobs as if you memorized openings.

Stratego is good if you like chess but you're bad at it or you're a kid.

Don't forget about checkers.

Clue.

I'm always a huge fan of Pictionary if you have enough people to make it fun (4+).

Operation is really super extra fun if you're drunk and controlling enough to actually get people to start playing.

Battleship or one of its modern variants for 2 people is definitely a good time.

Trivial Pursuit is fun but can be one-sided.

Blokus is cool.

--

Of course all of this ignores the fact that there is a huge industry of people who take board gaming off the board and just cover their whole table. There are dozens or hundreds of books of parameters and rules for how to play. This is the world of miniature gaming. Games like Warhammer.. ..and.. ..Warhammer 40,000 will bring you into the strategy like never before. BEWARE miniature gaming can lead to LARPing.

Talisman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talisman_%28board_game%29). Be the Monk, always add to your craft, and you can't be beaten.

I have Talisman!! I forgot about that one. Not sure if the boyfriend would be into it, I don't think it's really his 'genre'. Worth trying out though.

Talisman is so fun. You get fucked over pretty easily if you end up with a shitty class in the beginning though. A few of them are just so OP.

Axis & Allies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_%26_Allies)
Settlers of Catan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Settlers_of_Catan) (online Java version! (http://nand.net/jsettlers/))

Spades (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spades)
Hearts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearts)

Although I think all the above games are best with 4 people (at least more than 2).

I've honestly never played A&A myself, I just know that its similar to Risk and Risk sucks with 2 people, its best with 4-5 people, so I figured A&A would be similar. *shrug*

Oh. I was agreeing with you. It sucks 1v1, 2v1 is "ok," but it's not really fun till you have 2v2 or 3v2.

Ticket to Ride (http://www.daysofwonder.com/tickettoride/en/) is a lot of fun, too.

We almost god smallword. The duder at the gamestore suggested it. Zombies!! was like, $20 cheaper though so we went with that. Smallword looked really cartoony, is the game itself as cheesy as the box made it look?

Pinochle and Smear always my favorites for 3-4 people, yes I know they aren't board games, but card games so much more superior, leaves much more to imagination.

The game is awesome. I'm not sure how it would come across as "cheesy". It essentially a PVP game between different races and you use the territory and abilities as utility. There is some neat mechanics (mainly the race and ability selection being randomized)

The Z-Man B Movie games are a lot of fun. I have taught at least a half a dozen people how to play it who have never touched a collectible or strategy card game before. Also there is a lot of humor in the quotes and art work.

Yeah it's a little more involved than the typical board game.

(ever play Strip Talisman? :))

How about simple games like Sorry! or chinese checkers? Or if you're feeling adventurous, try to find some MECCG cards (Middle Earth Collectible Card Game). It's been out of print for years but an old girlfriend and I used to spend a lot of time playing it. We had a special Strip version of that too ;)

(We had Strip versions of everything lol. Monopoly was especially fun. Chance and Community Chest cards were awesome)

why not? i absolutely love playing euchre. i recommend downloading the free app on your mobile device to get better at it, if you really care enough. it's fun to make into a drinking game too, whenever a team gets euchred they have to do a shot, and a team wins all the tricks the other team has to do a shot.

Never played Mexican Train myself, but I play dominoes a lot with guys at work. Double-six set, 2v2 block game. Never gets old.
