View Full Version : Anyone play on mobile broadband?

There aren't any unlimited mobile broadband plans. Anyone have any idea how much bandwidth it would eat an hour to play p99 (roughly, obviously). Looks like plans are either 5GB or 10 Gb that I would get (no overages possible).
Just curious how many hours that might net me a month. Typically, Id only use it for playing EQ. I can get almost everything else from my phone.
Also, any idea on streaming videos/movies ?
It looks like they push these plans for simple tasks only, which I can do from my phone.

idk dude.. im like in the middle of no where.... can't even get a land phone line...
I use the internet on radio waves (and you thought radio was dead ;p)... not super ridiculous fast but get 5 mb/sec and 40~50 ping
most mmo dont need more than 56k for info either way.. all the hard work done on your comp
edit and yah.. here i'm bored ;p

Completely anecdotal and may be,completely wrong:
I remember EQ wanting 3MB an hour, so if you have 5 gigs a month you could stay logged in 24/7

I've got 4G unlimited plan through Verizon and use it all the time.
yes there are those that lost their 4G plan when upgrading to the new 4G phones from 3G.
Luckily I was not one of those people :)

EQ bandwidth is less than just about anything else. I played EQ on a 33.6k modem once upon a time. 3MB/hour sounds reasonable.
Also, know that you don't need to pay for tethering or a USB modem or anything if you have a properly compatible device (not sure if you're talking about phone data or the "computer oriented" data plans...). I have unlimited data on my android phone, and I just tether with Easytether Pro and get a great connection to P99.
I have an iPhone 4. I have one of the unlimited plans (was grandfathered in on my iPhone 3G) I cannot tether without jailbreaking. I have no interest in risking my unlimited status, so I don't want to do any of that.

My plan is to get one of the mobile broadband plans.
I might also get a new sleek laptop. I was going to buy a desktop, but my current laptop is too big for travel and my netbook is junk. Big mistake to purchase. It serves it's purpose, but I never use it.

I'm out in the country, so i used to use ntelos which i got into before they had a limit, only was able to get 1 meg down sporadically due to trees n shit in the way but it held out alright, i suppose it would probably work a lot better in a clearer area. Thing is, whenever i lost 2 pings in a row = disconnection, which got a little frustrating, luckily there are other options rather than satellite now where i live so thats a thing of the past.

I don't know about iPhones, but there's no need to root(same as jailbreak...) an android phone to tether, and your provider isn't going to notice if all you do is play EQ, since that's considerably less bandwidth than playing Pandora or watching YouTube. Cost me $10 for the app that makes it work great.
They limit it on the iphone. You have to buy a seperate tethering plan.

I have the original droid and tether using the program "PDAnet", everyday. I use it to play P99, wow, and other mmos all the time. I'd be lost with out it actually haha, but it runs fine on 3g network.

I'm going to get a dedicated line for my laptop. Just bought a new thin one for travel (powerful enough to run battlefield 3, though) . It should arrive next week (good timing for pvp server). I haven't decided on a plan, yet. Leaning AT&T. Service in my area is excellent.

I use AT&T on my ferry rides inbetween cities and it's awesome. Only time I've lost service is when I'm out in a 30 mile wide channel or something.

I play tethered to a Droid X on Verizon using PDAnet 3.02, got lucky enough to be grandfathered in to unlimited data but considering I used to play this on dial up it generally doesn't need more than 2-5kb/s.

Anybody connecting via a tethered iPhone? My wife's iPhone 4 is an early enough version to jail break and we both have unlimited plans. I was wondering if using a VPN would prevent them from seeing what you're using it for.
I play from my AT&T iPhone 4 with pdanet with no issues

i play using virgin mobile wireless broadband unlimited data (5gig cap then slows after that)
it has good days and bad days,
i ping usually around 200ms, wouldnt trust it kiting, but it works
i can box 9 chars on peq without problems unless its super cloudy out , otherwise they wouldn't all load and i'd get droped zoning.
but i live 2 miles off a paved road with the nearest neighbor ....1 mile away
which means no land line or cable, so this gets me by....
oh, and i do go over the 5 gigs, but not by much...

i try to take a screen shot but it takes to long, i will be dead, the i see the 75 lines of hits i get, then loading...lol
im on a at&t 3G air card 5GB plan, i use the air card in a cradelpoint mbr1000 router
the speed i get on speedtest.net is 135ms ping 6.53 Mbps down and 1.07 Mbps up
any1 got any ideas?

I have unlimited plan with Sprint. Which some day they will take away, but this plan is still available to new customers.
When I am at work or on the move I use USB or WiFi tether to play. 3 MB to 5 MB per hour is about what I see.

Grandfathered unlimited Verizon account, my main line is my Thunderbolt on the Los Angeles 4G netword so its usually rock solid, I run tethered off it (No its not paid tethering, custom ROM) 15+ MBs down / 5-8 MBs up on average.
I run torrents off the same line on occasion, ive managed 120 GB down this month and no issues with verizon. I also have 6 4g Lines on my account, been a customer over 10 years, and i change the device ID regularly so I imagine their not about to bitch about anything soon.

Same exactly, but I use the HTC droid. Love PDAnet except I can't seem to use VPNs with it...

I have tethered off my phone just fine and played eq. Did this while on a bus as well.

When I was still playing WoW, there was a period where I was without internets and went into withdrawels and managed to figure out how to tether my iphone (AT&T) to my comp. Needless to say, I was able to box THREE accounts (my own +2 friend's) in Alterac Valley just fine. It was some period where the battlegrounds where giving some stupid amount of experience per game played, just had to take advantage! We were all taking turns boxing them to get as many level 80's as we could while it lasted.
Anyways, tethering is more than enough internetz for EQ!

Just remember EQ uses UDP. So make sure the app doesn't just support TCP.
