View Full Version : Game Mechanics: Food size duration is not respected.

Per the other thread on this - http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?p=37846#post37846 - it looks like this is a legit bug.

A "snack" sized food lasts as long as a "miraculous meal" sized food.

I made up a serving up fish rolls (0.1 weight, banquet meal sized food) and found they were being eaten at the same rate as a normal water flask.

Food duration wasn't added until Luclin when stat food started to show up.

There was without question food duration at launch. I remember distinctly that Iron Rations lasted almost twice the amount of time regular rations did.

The difference with Luclin was that was when stat food did arrive and also longer duration food. Prior to that, I believe Iron Rations were king of the hill...they were a pain because they were more expensive and heavier, but food/drink was very much a real issue pre-luclin.

food/drink was very much a real issue pre-luclin.

Not much of an issue iirc. The way I remember it..

Iron rations lasted longer than ration. Ration lasted longer than muffin.

Fuzzlecutter 5000 lasts longer than water. Water lasted longer than milk.

I might be wrong about this...trying to find old stuff. WIll post if I do.

Well, I remember it being an issue at low and mid levels...iron rations were expensive.

The above would put it in Velious era though.. Luclin was December 01, Velious was December 2000.

I would have swore that food duration was classic.

Why was Fuzzlecutter so popular? Did people just not realize that it
wasn't lasting any longer?

i know people that buy the fuzzlecutter even now cuz they "believe" it's longer lasting even though i tell them it isn't

Food durations and stats have been covered many times on the forums.

My guess would be that durations were one of the many things that they intended on messing around with then they launched EQ but never got around to it till later on. This is no different than the fact that there were many recipes in classic that you could find throughout the world that did not actually get added to the game till Kunark.

Again, this is just my guess, but until I see proof otherwise, all food had the same duration UNTIL the changes to food duration were implemented. It really makes no less sense than any other silly classic things (like clerics with + intelligence gear).

With the current P99 release, Rations are not lasting as long as Iron Rations. This does not match the 2000-era Classic timeline.

I recall food durations from EQ pre-kunark did work. Iron Rations was a thing, I distinctly remember lower guk camping with several stacks of water and 1 of Iron Rations. Regardless of the patch notes, they are wrong. Food durations were working from Beta 3.

Sad to see that durations are not working in P99, which is a departure from how it was. Baking skill is therefore completely and totally useless.

I have the differing values (durations) per era working.

Does anyone have more research on the following:

A definitive time of how often a character should eat or drink?
Large races eating more than smaller races?
Drinking more in desert zones?
Anything else about food/drink that is relevant?

I had dug up some evidence about desert zone consumption, seemed to be a 2:1 ratio in the Ro deserts + Oasis + Lavastorm (for consuming drink). Should note there was some conflicting evidence and no logs posted of timing it.

I had never timed it myself on Live but i'm not sure if it still exists there.

Here's some of the in era comments I dredged up.

Mccoy ate/drank mostly summoned stuff - so you might get some timers from his logs. Not sure if it helps starting out empty and knowing how many he had based on "you begin casting abundant drink" or what have you.

Qien should have fuzzlecutter in his logs if you're looking for the "enduring" duration too.

Dug a little deeper, certainly warrants further research. I verified Qien/Mccoy/Gdevash each purchased "Water Flask". I am not sure at this point what triggers a 'low on drink' message. Is it 1 item remaining? 2?

My baking conclusions - Everquest Message Board (archive.org) (https://web.archive.org/web/20000611213831/http://boards.station.sony.com/everquest/Forum8/HTML/000978.html)

This thread from 2000 states food is consumed every 30.5 minutes.

I would like an accurate pre-Apr2001 baseline. From my math, food/drink on p99 is currently eaten/drank approximately every 33.75 minutes.

Remaining steps:

1. Ensure consumption timer is correct pre-Apr2001
2. Create a modifier that will apply an accurate difference for duration, assuming that no food/drink post-Apr2001 is consumed at a faster rate than pre-Apr2001. (For example, if any post-Apr2001 has a lower duration than pre-Apr2001, that would seem strange, but if there is any evidence for it, please let me know).

Additionally, was any food or drink (not alcohol) clickable for force consumption prior to Apr2001?

Rygar
09-27-2023, 04:18 PM
well, it certainly seemed to be around 28.5 mins in the Qien logs on average. Although, possible the food physically disappeared a message later or something like that, and who knows how zoning affected the timers.

It did appear the Desert drink consumption was bogus, or at the very least patched out with Luclin.

I'm not sure what my older logs show, i'll see if I find any pre-April 2001.

nilbog

Did some more work on this.

If food duration value 1 = 144 seconds, that would mean:

item name(value) = (value*144) in seconds

ration(15) = 36 minutes worth of -hunger (15*144/60)
iron ration(25) = 60 minutes worth of -hunger (25*144/60)
birthday cake slice(2) = 4.8 minutes worth of -hunger (2*144/60)

Does this seem accurate? Are there a few examples of known definitive food timers to check?

Rygar
09-29-2023, 12:22 PM
Found some 2003 food timers listed, fairly comprehensive. Just curious that he seems to state the 'consumption period' is a bit randomized? For example a snack may be consumed every 2 minutes or every 10 minutes by his claim.

https://mboards.eqtraders.com/eq/forum/tradeskills/baking/5421-food-and-drink-durations

Quoting here in case link breaks

got curious, which is a dangerous thing. So I made up a list of the durations of various foods and drinks in EQ. As near as I can tell, the number listed is the number of real-world minutes that the food or drink will last if you right click it. It lasts twice as long when eaten normally (without clicking it). Keep in mind that times will vary depending on who you are, whether you have a horse, and what zones you visit (for instance, water is used up faster in some desert zones).

It turns out there are about 500 types of food and more than 50 types of drink. More than 60 percent of the foods are 'meal', and most of the drinks are 'drink'. It appears that the categories are

1-5 snack/whistle wetter
6-20 meal/drink
21-30 hearty meal/refreshing drink
31-40 banquet size meal/lasting drink
41-50 feast/flowing drink
51-60 enduring meal/enduring drink
61-240 miraculous meal/miraculous drink

My spelling should be correct, although the capitalization isn't. I believe all player-made (or fished or foraged) items are listed, but there may be some store-bought items or rare drops still missing. (btw Dawnshroud Seeds, Arctic Clams, and Sewer Catfish do not exist. Also it seems that Honey Mush Bread and Catfish Croak Sandwich don't exist.)

Almost all of the information comes from Lucy (lucy.fnord.net). There are still about 20 items in the list for which I don't know the duration. None of the items actually have parentheses -- all the comments in parentheses are my notes.

EDIT: I think I misunderstood his initial classification. Consumption period isn't random, each category (such as meal) can have individual meals that have different consumption timers.

EDIT #2: Spot checked and Lucy lists the same timers which is the 'right click duration'. So regularly eating these should last twice as long.
