View Full Version : Class Questions

I'm new to EQ pvp and I have a few question regarding classes.
I'm pretty set on either playing as a Monk or a Rogue, I was wondering if either of these classes are going to perform well in a pvp setting? I know that pure melee are at somewhat of a disadvantage in EQ pvp.
Also, for the Rogue I was considering either a Barbarian for slam and the str/sta bonus or Dwarf for the MR bonus. I was wondering if the Dwarf MR bonus (starts at 30 MR) is worthwhile?
Also I suppose Halfling remains an option due to excellent agi/dex and it can hit 95 base str; plus the exp bonus will help me get ahead of the leveling curve early on.
As far as monks go; I was wondering if they will really be viable at all? Rogues get free invis but Monks seem pretty vulnerable, however early on they have an advantage due to not needing weapons or gear to be effective and later on I'd think we really just need some resist stuff to do well vs casters.
Yes, I am a major noob and probably suck at pvp etc but I'd appreciate it if anyone could help me out with some of my question or even provide advice/tips.

First off, you've chosen probably the two worst classes for pre-Kunark PvP. Rogues and monks have a place in high-end dungeon PvP where it's all about the melee assist train, but other than that, they're among the weakest classes. Monks barely even have any gear until planes, and they can't wear most of the easy resist gear so it's extremely difficult to get even 100MR.
If you really wanna play a rogue, I'd recommend dwarf. Dwarven ringmail tunic is like the only resist chestpiece until Velious or something, and since there's nothing a barbarian can wear on the chest that helps noticeably in PvP, the dwarf essentially has a 13MR advantage. Statwise they're pretty equal and slam has very little use for a rogue because it shares timer with backstab. Dwarves are also small, that can be an advantage now and then.
Halflings are just not good. Agi and dex are pretty much worthless stats if you're not a tank and you get nothing out of racial hide as a rogue. You might as well go with dwarf if you wanna be a shortie.
Monks have their uses, mostly in endgame PvP as mentioned. They're pretty durable between raw tankability and mend, plus the ability to feign off mobs is more important than you'd think when you're fighting over raid content and such. For 1v1 fights in East Karana, it's probably the worst class. High-end guilds competing for content always want a couple of monks with them. They're good at preventing trains, good in assist slugfests, and good at getting to enemy groups in dungeons or scouting places where mobs will spot rogues. I'd never recommend it to someone who's new to PvP or doesn't intend to become a high-end player.
Is shaman or druid a better pvp class? I'm already assuming necro blows both of them away

Shaman and druids are great at pvp. Its too easy, actually. Both can beat your necro without issues.
im a sexy barbarian shaman

Necros are solid but actually not that insane until Kunark and Velious. 1-50 necro spells are kinda weak. Shaman and druid are fine and pretty newbie-friendly as well.

Getting off "Splurt" later is a joy unequaled

Splurt sucks. What makes necros strong is the big Kunark lifetaps and dots that tick for 100+. Splurt just gets pumiced before it ramps up, nobody should use it in PvP.

Everyone who thinks splurt is a good spell in pvp is a moron. Friendly fyi

Agree. Seeing it go the distance is priceless however. Reading too much into a statement IMO

They aren't, they just don't peak until Kunark.
why are necros "bad" btw
It's not that they are bad, it's that the other casters are better when no one has resist gear. DoTs and lifetaps blow when wizards and mages can use their biggest nuke and 2 shot you. Kunark brings in a lot of resist gear such that people are no longer JUST stacking MR. In other words, people are going to have decent levels of FR/CR.
Wizards get lures which don't hit much harder than necro taps (and don't give HP, obviously). Granted, you'll probably be dotting or using deflux. Mages and other casters don't get resist mods.
I can't really predict what shape enchanters will be in with P99s code. Charm is pretty much ruled out unless you sacrifice every slot to charisma.

Play what you want because this is a PvP server.
Let me elaborate, on blue99 you can be a untwinked ranger and be ignored and shunned like the plauge....
but...
on red99 no matter what you are, you are "something" and an asset to a guild in their wars and struggles vs their evil enemies.
So you are a monk "but monks suck!" everyone shouts. One guild rejects you because you are not a uber mage like they are.
ok, then that guilds enemy recruits you and you help kill the guild that turned you down. Who feels stupid now, sitting naked wonder where the nearest malachite vendor is while you walk your monkish feet over their corpses with your guild.
On red servers, its the player/human that is valuable, not <insert class here to fill out our perfect raid roster>.
We get asked allllll the time on Al'kabor by new players "what class is needed?", and the answer is always the same..
"play the class you want to the most, because then you will play longer/more"

do some research theres 12 years worth of it floating around.

Probably the monk who has been taken out of the fight permanently by a mage who sent his Earth pet on him.
Play what you want, but don't expect much out of rogue/monk until Kunark. In which case, enjoy god mode as you Innerfire/Duelist and one round everyone.

Ugh I've been way too excited about Red99. I keep thinking about what to play when it's released and changing my mind over and over. Cleric! No, druid. Paladin! No, wizard.
And stuff. Now I'm seriously considering being a rogue at release. And OP.. rogues at start of Red99 will be hard mode! With no resist gear, any caster pretty much as kill you. It especially looks bad because of all the mages that are gonna be starting. Earth pet roots you, good luck getting a pumice to channel while being beat on by pet. Time to pull out the bow lol, or pk a pet to cost them a gem :P
But EQ pvp is really not about the solo game. As a rogue, you will hopefully be in groups a lot of the time. And in group vs group pvp, you likely won't be the first target, allowing you time to help gank some fefs! I guess pvp for a rogue is a lot like pve for a rogue: solo isn't your thing, but you have a lot to offer groups!

Rogues are fun. 200+ BS in classic still hurts. Just don't expect to solo any mages.

Earth pet used to resit just as much as regular roots. It will hopefully be fixed before launch, it will be pretty stupid if it isn't.
Monk is also quite hard to gank - run into mobs and feign, people aren't typically coming in after you.
Rogue is awesome for ganking that clothie sitting down medding or afk, but remember just how often you are going to land that backstab... Typically you'll be hitting in the 20-40 range otherwise. :( Don't get me wrong, I love rogues, my fav class in EQ by far. I don't think I'll be able to stomach playing one for the first few months.
