This thread is for people to:

post photographs they created
give honest critique of photographs posted
discuss photography in general

If you post a picture here, please expect honest criticism even without permission, since that is a stated purpose of this thread. That being said, let's keep this thread free of idiot trolls.

I'm mainly creating this thread so I can post my pictures and get some people to tell me how bad they are and why in the hopes that I will become a better photographer. I had thought to just post a thread with a bunch of my pictures, but it occurred to me that several of you guys are probably amateur photographers and would probably enjoy that too, hence this thread.

Please don't plagiarize here, if you absolutely must post photographs by other people, at least credit them as above.

Totally dig the cactus pictures, man.

I'm far from a photographer, more like "just a guy with a camera", who generally shies away from it, yet carries a camera around on occasion "just in case". These are a few pictures from those "just in case" moments.

I had my first shot at 'sports photography' (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shannacore/sets/72157627630325741/)last weekend. It was a lot of fun. The shots come out hilarious because their faces and/or bodies are usually twisted in strange ways.

The Balloon Fiesta (http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=ballon+fiesta&s=int) is this week in ABQ. Getting up at 4am tomorrow to watch about 700 balloons ascend. Should be a great photo op!

Really good stuff in here (Hasbinbad + Deathgurl esp). Those are awesome.

I bought a Canon Rebel last year and only rarely use it, sadly, due to the combination of size (not very portable) and also me just not knowing how to use it effectively.

Painting is my thing so I'm also content to just take inspiration from photographers who know what they're doing. ;)

http://i.imgur.com/WJ1ng.jpg

That cactus blooms only once a year, and only if the summer is hot enough.

I am a certified photographer (Formally educated)

My opinion;

1st pic has alot of issues, first of all the umbrella is very distracting even with selective focus it is very noticeable (probably a result of the contrast of no color (the flower) to orange (the umbrella). The cactus is the subject and therefore should be larger (i.e. take up more space in the photo). 1/5

2nd pic is better, proper use of selective focus and the umbrella is hardly noticeable. The subject is in the rule of thirds. Much more detailed image of the subject although I would've like to have seen more of it (you cut it off the top, which could have just been a poor choice of crop) But overall not bad. 3/5

Stay at it and you'll train your "shooters eye" for better composition.

This isn't a bad photo but I feel that you went a little bit too shallow with your depth of field. I like the idea of leaving the back or front portion of the artichoke blurred, but you caught more of a diagonal stripe down the middle. Move the artichoke more to the right a little and try to get some sun/shadows going on.. I never realized how cool artichokes looked!

Nope! The only photoshopping I do is removing artifacts if the digital sensor on my Nikon D80 doesn't pick up a color right or for color filters. Other than that I tend to just do natural light photography. For this photo I did use Lightroom's color filter to bring out more color (I actually used the "Yesteryear" preset because I haven't gone into much detail with tone curves).

All of my shots are with manual telescoping style Nikkor lenses, meaning no light metering or autofocus. I do it all by hand! That shot was with a 50mm F1.8 lens which simply brought the depth of field down and a polarizer to get rid of reflections/washout from the moisture in the flower petals.

Taken with a 50 mm - F/1.8 lens that I haven't played around with much yet.

Learn to love it! That's one of my most used fixed lenses, moreso than a 35mm. It's perfect for portraits and with a large aperature you can really focus in on objects or do low light shots with relative ease.

Pacific Ocean off Kaua'i

The colors are very beautiful in that photo!I love the view but I dislike how in every ocean shot I've ever seen the water looks fuzzy as though it had aliasing problems. It's a product of the lens/sensor, but that always bugged me.

OngorDrakan

Low-light and lots of tiny waves. I was using a 70-300 for it too. I just loved the colors from the sun on the clouds and ocean.

Those are amazing pictures, Drunke! You make me envious with your film production quality. I think I have an old Nikon FA or FM that I'd like to muck about with but I'm not really excited about procuring slower shutter speed film types to get the results I would want. At $5-7 a pop for just a few pictures I'd probably murder myself. 9/10 I'm shooting at 100 ISO... the film camera hits down to 50. I want that.

I looked at the camera.. it's an old FM and actually does have light metering capabilities... funny that... my D80 doesn't support light metering with manual lenses but the FM has it built right in. welp! Also it goes to 12 ASA which if I am reading correctly is also 12 ISO. Yowza.

Using a Sony alpha 100 (the first sony dslr) with the PoS kit lens it came with and some old minolta maxxum lenses.. 50mm f1.7, 70-210 f4 (the "Beercan"), and 28-135 4-4.5 macro (the "Secret Handshake").

Those sunset shots were within a week of me getting a dslr for the first time (this all just happened like a month ago), and I didn't know about meticulous wiping of my lens. That shit can be fixed in post anyway. Also, some of it is fungus, so I'm partially screwed.

You pulled a Hasbin on 1 and 2 and went too wide with your aperture. I've read that lenses are only really sharp 1 or 2 stops up from wide open, so even more reason to have faster glass..

I don't like 4 because it reminds me of the never ending struggle I have with high dynamic range subjects. HDR pictures are bad ass, but without a tripod it's hard and makes my head hurt. So, I can just see it wash and the top and shade at the bottom, and that's the only reason I'm saying anything. Someone teach me how to avoid this so I can stop hating. Arrrrrrgh!

3, 5, and 6 are really great pictures.

These pictures are mainly Point&Shoot, but some of them are nice and/or interesting.

Guess I'll add a some more. Wish I had a DSLR, I'd probably have more higher quality pictures, but I fear if I buy one I won't use it enough.
