Download, change compatibility settings of EverQuest.exe to 256 colors, and run it
When asked for login info, just click ok. When it tells you it can't connect, hit ok again and it'll start up.
You can tell that it was much closer to Everquest's DikuMUD roots at the time.

Lol. Ok, I'll post some screenshots in a sec but they look really fucked up because Windows can't handle running a program in 256 colors, and there's no in-game screenshot function so I just have to print screen and paste it into paint. Gimme a minute.

Here's a youtube of what it looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0GyQCYVb2s
Here's a few screenies I just took. Looks like shit because Windows can't handle the colors. It doesn't look like that when actually playing, but capturing a Windows screenie fucks it up.

If you run the game, it looks like it does in that youtube vid. It's a small window and you can fullscreen it with F2, but it crashes if you downsize it again or alt-tab away.

I saw some video where McQuaid talks about how the game was originally going to be software accelerated. It was a big risk for them to convert to hardware acceleration for the Voodoo cards of that era. This was considered "pushing the envelope" at the time, and I have to say, the EQ that we still play and love looks thousands of times better than that video. Especially once you copy the s3d files from the downloadable trillogy trial... EQ has never looked better.
