Hi guys,

Long ago on live I used to play a cleric. It's been a while now of course and just wanted to play one again. Tried a necro here, but everything I do makes me want to play a cleric instead.

What race is a better choice, and how about leveling areas?

Thanks.

Halflings = xp bonus...but as a clr you'll be leveling in groups pretty much.

Dwarves = best overall stats, highest str.

High Elves = people like elves + highest wis, lowest Str

Dark elves = petty?

Erudites Humans and gnomes - relativley unique.

Pick the race you are happy with. But yeah Halfling gets bonus and Hide. Dwarves with High strength? please, what does a cleric need for that? Dark elves also can hide and get a snare necklace, but are hated in lots of towns. Others like have higher Wisdom, not a game breaker but nice so you can worry about other stats instead.

But seriously play what your going to have fun with.

One nice thing about Dark Elves is a high innate Hide skill. Having a 50/50 shot at an instant invis when a huge train shows up can be a nice convenience for you and your group.

Bear in mind that the DE quested snare item is only effective at low levels. It gets resisted to the point of uselessness at a pretty low level. At least it was on live. Halfler sneak/hide is a huge boon.

Hide has saved me more times than I can count, just make sure to con a mob after you hide.

Also DE's look cooler, our city is better, we worship the god of Hate and we may be kos everywhere, but it's more like you're an outlaw (cause were badass).

also HI VOHL :)

Dwarves with High strength? please, what does a cleric need for that?

The fact that clerics are the weakest of all plate wearing classes in the game. The first decent armor a cleric sees is usually bronze, and just a few pieces of that stuff will easily encumber a high elf. Being encumbered is at the least an inconvenience and at the worst will get you killed when trying to flee.

I would say Halfling - sneak/hide, small race, exp bonus are all great positives.

Biggest down side to a halfling cleric is being asked for SoW or ports your entire career.

Dark Elf - if you like playing an evil race.

Dwarf - Best for min/maxing stats, dorf roll.

Dwarfs get "barrel roll"

I usually think dwarves are the best.
Gnomes look cool in the plate armor
I like halfling too because they get hide and the xp bonus.

For the PvP server though I like dwarf. Yeah wis stuff is easy but on a PvP server you play in your resist gear almost all the time. Hide is pretty important though because lots of time people don't have see invis on and you can disappear from them.

Dwarf is statistically best. None of the other races have any valuable advantage, just largely useless gimmicks, and playing a plate class whose gear doesn't give strength is pretty hellish if you're a weak race. Since you're asking what's best, you're obviously not too concerned about aesthetics and roleplay, so the absolute answer is dwarf. Good wisdom, highest stamina, highest strength, no disadvantages.

DE gets hide(+), is KoS is more places(-), and is blue.

Go with halfling, they get hide, isn't KoS everywhere, AND get an exp bonus

Halfling sneak to use KoS merchants is another bonus.

Also, Hi yourself, Malev!

Not to mention Dwarves get innate MR bonus I believe.

Dwarves are one of the best non-ogre/troll/iksar races.

Agreed, dwarf is probably the way to go. If you're new to the server you'll enjoy the high STR for looting plus wearing heavy armor (if you progress beyond Leather/Woven armor).

halfling is the only race for clerics.

Bubbles

If I had it to do over again, Bubbles would be a halfling no doubt.

They are just dang cuter, really.

From a min / max perspective, you need to look at the combined 4 main attributes of relevance to a cleric: (STR / STA / AGI / WIS)

STR - it's just.. amazingly necessary with all the plate you'll be wearing. You can go around with low STR if you never want to loot anything.. ever.
STA - HPs are good, 'nuff said.
AGI - helps with dodge and avoidance a touch. <75 = annoying AC penalty
WIS - mana. yep.

DE - 65 / 70 / 90 / 93 - Total 318
ERU - 65 / 75 / 70 / 93 - Total 303
GNM - 65 / 75 / 85 / 77 - Total 302
HUM - 80 / 80 / 75 / 85 - Total 320
HLF - 75 / 80 / 95 / 90 - Total 340
HIE - 60 / 70 / 85 / 105 - Total 320
DRF - 95 / 95/ 70 / 93 - Total 353

Clearly Dwarf and halfling are heads above the competition. In this comparison.

If we want to remove AGI from the equation:

DE - Total 228
ERU - Total 233
GNM - Total 217
HUM - Total 245
HLF - Total 245
HIE - Total 235
DRF - Total 283

Dwarf is now an even clearer winner, although keep in mind a dwarf starts at 70 AGI and needs 5 to avoid an AC penalty.

Probably the one biggest boost to High Elves is they will have far, far closer to 200 WIS in full resist gear if you are interested in raiding.

But for situational every day grinding, dwarves and halflings are going to have the most utility.

For true roleplay, I'd go for dwarf cleric.

For usefulness:

darkelf - ultravision, hide, snare from regent of innoruuk necklace (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=170)

I did enjoy that necklace *and* the hide on live a lot. OTOH I was boxing on live, with the necro and cleric, so it was convenient to hide the cleric while medding and the necro could kite his mobs all over the place without danger to the cleric.

But still - hide while medding is awesome to avoid getting jumped by live mobs/spawns. Also for AFKs. Incredibly useful skill imo. Especially since you can confirm success by considering non-indiff mobs. You could even use it to "invis" past roamers with a bit of skill :)

Of course, that works for halfling clerics also, but they got furry feet! Yuck!

I've saved myself countless times using Hide as a Dark Elf Cleric.

The snare necklace, Regent Symbol of Innoruuk, has Clinging Darkness -- At level 60 (and even back as far as I can remember duo/trioing Efreeti, down to low 50's) I can snare the imps in SolB Efreeti camp so when my monk is killing them they don't run into other mobs.

I haven't had a lot of problems with the snare sticking; I don't really care about the damage.

Also, I can fear kite if I really, really wanted to.

I have my opiniion about the best race.

But choose the one you want to be the most. They are all pretty much OKAY even humans and erudites. Choosing a non dwarf or human paladin really impairs you with bad stats but choosing any cleric race is pretty much o.k.

So choose the one you think you want to be.

i would say dark elf for the snare necklace. stats are pretty unimportant in the grand scheme of things, snare is something that only a few classes can do.

I'd say halfling.

Sneak gives you a lot of options to faction quest/merchant etc etc

Hide, is really nice when you need a quick invis.

Exp Bonus never hurt anyone.

Halfling!

Except you get asked for sow and ports even in full purple armor. :(

At level 60 [..] I can snare the imps in SolB Efreeti camp so when my monk is killing them they don't run into other mobs.

You mean on EQLive, right?

My original cleric was a halfling and it was awesome. The hide feature saved my ass more times than I can remember. Sneak was nice when it worked correctly and of course it was fun to tell people ok porting .. and hit gate and then tell them your a cleric and how many times are they going to think your a druid in plate.

If I had the time and effort to play a cleric again, Id make him a halfling in a second.
