These guys were blowing up a couple months ago on a forum I used to post on from time to time... I'm not a huge rap fan, but do listen to a bit.. these guys just do nothing for me though. I really don't see the appeal.

Kind of crazy how a popular youtube video can make a band these days though.

I thought this was all a big joke.

In a way it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Antwoord

It's just an act, one of this guy's many personas.
It's like art school hip hop.

All the Die Antwoord interview videos like this are just a ruse:

Also this is not their neighborhood:

Yolandi is actually his wife and that chubby kid is not their DJ.

It's quite ingenious actually. Soon as I found all this out my respect for them grew exponentially.

Not that anybody cares but I found it interesting.

/veto. They are far from the first group of people that has used shock or oddity to sell music. David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust) did that shit way back in the day. So did Freddy Mercury, Alice Cooper, Ozzy, Manson, Lady Gaga.... just rebranding the same thing all those people did.

Only difference is that Bowie was way more talented :)

Have to disagree with you here. I don't see the use of shock or oddity anywhere in their music. Die Antwoord is basically just doing a parody of Zef which is the South African version of "trailer trash rap".

If you take a look at the other stuff they have done, this guy is an artist, he makes stuffed animals, bizzaro art videos, etc. maxnormal.tv in particular has all sorts of interesting stuff.

I know it has been done before, but I fail to see how that should detract from what this guy is doing. He fooled tons of people and at the end of the day he's doing performance art. Also some of the people you mentioned had 1 new shtick and that was it. Cooper, Manson, Gaga, etc. This guy has changed like 5 times now. Also Ziggy Stardust was at a time when androgyny was in to begin with (ie: new York Dolls). Don't get me wrong though, I love old Bowie!

I think the main reason I respect it is because he's not following any sort of fad to make quick money. He just does whatever and is fairly convincing. I'm not saying he's a musical genius or anything like that but it is fun (and I like his stuffed animals :p .)

Fuck all of you who said I wouldn't make it. They said I was a loser. They said I was a no-one. They said I was a fuckin' psycho. ..but look at me now. All up in the interweb. Worldwide.

Basically, haters gonna hate. However he got to the point where he could say that, he got there. When you think you can do better, I await your interweb fame.

If the last decade of reality television has taught us anything, it is that anyone can become famous. So no, I don't think this guy deserves any special respect for that accomplishment.

Who really wants to be famous though? Certainly not me.

I completely agree with you on this point.

However, to be fair reality tv generally gives fame to those that have no talent and/or simply signed a piece of paper saying you can video tape me 24/7 making an ass of myself.

Labels have been trying to sign him for a while now. If he purely wanted fame we would have seen him back in 2002. He's an artist doing multi-media based projects and incorporating himself into it. I liken him to "The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black", "Captured By Robots" or hell, even Gwar and Green Jello. Music was only a part of what those bands did (and for the most part the music wasn't all that great). The difference is that this guy, like pro-wrestlers in the olden days remains kayfabe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kayfabe).

You can argue all you want about how much you dislike the music he is making (be it now or in his past incarnations) but to simply compare him to a reality tv type personaility is a bit harsh in my opinion.

I know I'm not going to change any minds with this post but I for one really enjoy watching artists span multiple art forms and completely immersing themselves in their work. It's audio/visual/video homage and satire all rolled into one and frankly, I don't think there's enough of that these days.

wha..? what is this thread?

He's actually not that bad, and the music is quirky enough. It might be too weird for me, but I guess that's kind of the whole idea.
