View Full Version : I want to get a motorcycle for price range of 3 - 6k

Any ideas what would be good? I just need something to get to and from work. It is about 85 miles round trip. Therefore I am looking to get something to save a ton on gas. I don't care what type as long as its reliable and decent. Obviously it will have to be used. But , what are some brands and makes I can look into? No I won't ride a scooter or vespa that crap is really horrid looking to me.

buy a Yamaha R1 or a Yamaha FZ6-N S2.

Im driving a KTM Superduke, but it cost more then 3-6k, but are alot of cheaper bikes to get, and are you thinking of a new one? or you going to buy one from a private person?

i made my motorcycle-licence last october and was debating scooter vs bike for 6 months.

afterwards, last spring, i testdrived a ducati 796 for a whole day together with a friend with his superduke (btw he won a contest this year for the best looking superduke in austria). yes, it was lots of fun etc but i was still undecided.

vid i made that day:
http://www.facebook.com/v/1312490109585

the next day i tested a vespa and after half a mile i never looked back. no stress, easy to use especially in heavy traffic and believe it or not, faster than a bike in the city

i might have thought different if i lived somewhere outside cause that monster was the shit

you can find honda rvt1000r between 3-5k. a cheaper option is his younger brother, the vtr1000 for about 2-4k. more sensible shocks for street riding, and a little more tame of an engine.

benefits of a vtwin over an inline engine is more usable torque in the rpm range you will be riding in the city. goldwings are for old men. scooters are for the gays.

Didn't read this thread.

Would suggest Yamaha - go with 600cc. Don't be a geek and get a Ninja if you're a big white guy. Harleys are too expensive to be in that price range. Also don't be a jackass or get 1100cc or something ridiculous like that. You will kill yourself before you even figure out how to pedal shift.

Have you taken the training yet?

I skipped getting a bike in LA after I got into a wreck out here (which would have easily killed me had I been on the bike). If I still lived in Texas, I'd own one.

Get a Triumph. British engineered. Unique bikes with history. They make crotch rockets AND cruisers. The harley riders appreciate them, if that matters, as do the sport bike crowd.

http://www.triumphmotorcycles.com/

New they are spendy, but if you are lucky you can find one used from a guy who never rides his and wants to get rid of it. Friend of mine bought a 95 Thunderbird in mint condition for dirt cheap and its a real head turner.

I'm a big fan of some of the European bikes. Once I graduate I'm thinking of getting like a 60s or 70s triumph bonneville. Crotch rockets are cool too - but having laid one down before (a GXSR750), I don't trust myself to drive one responsibly.

But ya, the British style 60s and 70s bikes are really cool imo.

I'd get a cheapo 600cc Japanese bike. The 900+cc ones just have worse handling and gas mileage, besides you will probably never ever run out of speed on a 600 anyway - unless you just need to go 200MPH and die.

Meh, my first bike was a 08 CBR1000RR. Been riding it for three years now and no accidents. Just cause your bike -can- do 200, doesn't mean you -have- to do 200.

No matter the size it's all about your respect for the machine (Scooter or Motorcycle, Crotch Rocket or Cruiser). Get cocky or arrogant, and your likelihood of going down goes up, period. On any machine.

Stay safe, stay aware, stay alive. Remember, throttle all the way back is generally -not- a good idea on the street, no matter your skill level.

Personally, in that price range, I'd look for a CBR600. It all really comes down to taste though. You've said you want a motorcycle. So, you want a cruiser or a rocket?

Even tho I think your a complete fag, here is some advice.

If you get a cruiser, dont be yourself (complete fag) and get a pre-2003? harley sportster 1300.

If your a man, and under 35, get a GSX-750R, post 2004?

Oh, and helmet + cargo shorts + tshirt + flip flops. Thats the getup you want.

If your doing serious riding tho, like where you will be melting the sides off your tires, there is a motto "Dont dress for the ride, dress for the crash".

Skid jackets tend to fly apart 55mph+. Get a quality harley leather. Always wear some nice boots, I use military jump boots. Gloves are a must, even if its hot (if your riding hard), as fingers and toes are the easiest things for the pavement to grind off your body.

Roanoke
09-11-2011, 10:08 PM
For your first bike you DO NOT WANT ANYTHING WITH POWER. PERIOD.

Motorcycle riding isn't a joke, and it's not to be taken lightly. You can be the best rider in the world and you are still in as much danger as a guy who's been riding for a week. By getting on your bike each time you are accepting the fact that between here and your destination there are an infinite number of ways to kill yourself. Most if not all will be accidental. Spend the money, get yourself good gear. A leather jacket costs $200-500. A skin graft that probably wont be covered by insurance will set you back thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars.

Reality is, you WILL down your bike in the first year or two. If you have taken the precautions and hopefully a class (seriously, take a fucking class, a lot of states require them and a few of them highly suggest it) you'll react properly and walk away with a few bumps/bruises. This is also assuming that the first time you go down on your bike is a single vehicle incident (in other words, you took a corner too fast, or hit gravel. Not involving another vehicle)

The people who say "Ninja 250's are gay" should shut the fuck up because they're clearly ignorant on this subject. Ninja 250's are one of the better bikes you can have as a first time motorcycle rider. Low maintenance, great gas mileage, enough power to get you going but not enough power that you'll be popping wheelies on accident in second gear. They are light and controllable, easily maneuvered, but large enough to not be mistaken with a moped. Anyone who tells you to buy a bike bigger than 600cc's or so may as well tell you to buy a box of razor blades and a noose.

There's a VERY good reason that other countries have graduated licensing programs. In Canada (correct me if I'm wrong but this is how it was when I was first researching motorcycles a few years ago) you have to spend the first 6 months to a year on a bike no larger than 150cc, then you can move up to the next engine size and so on. Of course you'll never find a 150cc bike in America that you could buy at the dealer.

There's nothing cool about whipping down the freeway at 120 mph unless you think skinning your entire body with the highest grit sandpaper in existence is something you do for fun on the weekends.

Wear a FULL FACE helmet. Wear gloves. Wear a LEATHER, FULL COVER jacket. Wear boots. Wear heavy duty pants. The day my bike went down I was in full gear except I was wearing jeans. Guess where the most damage was? It definitely wasn't on my torso or head. And this was at 20mph on an empty road. Had I been going 40+ I would have needed to be taken to the hospital without a doubt.

Motorcycles are a ton of fun, but you have to respect them for the beast that they are and the dangers that come along with it.

A 600cc is only OK as a first bike, you DO NOT want anything bigger.

If it sounds like I'm trying to scare you, good. All of the squids who whip around town in their flip-flops and cargo shorts don't live long. Anyone that tells you otherwise has only been lucky thus far.

You only get to die once.

a 600cc supersport is a pretty retarded first bike. a stock GSXR600 runs a 11 second quarter mile. for comparison, thats roughly a second faster than a lamborghini murcielago or porsche 911 turbo. would you hand your 16 year old son the keys to a lamborghini as soon as he passed his drivers test?

what kind of bike are you after?

Cruiser = feet in front of you
sport bike(crotch rocket) = feet behind you
dual sport(think BMW) = feet right under you

not knowing your riding experience it's hard to suggest what type of bike you should get, they all handle, feel and ride different.

This is what i ride:

http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t341/v8killers/m109/060.jpg

this won't fit in your price range.

don't know how tall you are or how much you weigh, which will be a factor.

if you're looking for a reliable commuter that sips gas stay with a 250CC Japanese cruiser if you can fit on one and ride comfortably.

suggestion: Honda Rebel 250, you can buy one NEW in your price range, they handle great, reliable and great on gas mileage.

oh btw: when it comes to gear, like others have said, wear proper gear. i buy my gear from leatherup.com . great prices, good service and massive selection.

leather jackets "can" cost 300-500 like someone mentioned, but only an uninformed retard would pay that much for one.

never walk into a store to buy motorcycle gear. walk in, get sized for your jacket/helmet/chaps/pants whatever then go online and order it for much much less.

you don't "need" to wear leather, textile is just fine. however you do need to wear a full faced helmet (stay away from modular helmets too) and be sure to cover every part of your body that has skin ...

that means no shorts, no short sleeves, no fingerless gloves. must wear boots (exhaust pipes get damn hot and if your ankle touches the wrong spot you wanna be covered).

you need to (at a minimum) take a basic riding course, often times upon successful completion they will also give you a waver to get your motorcycle endorsement without having to take the state riding test.

No, you do not want an SV650! It's slow as hell, and V-twin engines sound seriously lame - like a damn tug boat. You really want an inline-four.

This is actually yours truly, on my first bike. It's a -94 CBR600, 100 bhp. Dirt cheap, great reliability, and at that time it felt like unbelievable performance...like 10 seconds 0-120 mph.

Lol, you dont have to wear a fucking skid suit to go through town. Some of you are just fucking clowns. I'm not saying be like my friend, and do standups in flip flops, but having on a full skid suit, and racing boots when going to the store is going to make you look like 1 thing: a fucking clown.

1 thing nobody has mentioned, and prolly cause they either dont know or havent thought of it, is a riding bell. There are some rules to it tho, you cant buy it, and you cant ask for it. You have to be given one by another rider etc.

Btw, naked (and I mean fully fucking stripped of all electronics and plastics) 07 GSX-750R is about as sexy as they come.

Oh, and dont buy a vtwin... if your gonna get a vtwin, just get a damn sportster.

Oh shit, and I forgot, another thing only 1 person has mentioned: take riding classes. Most riding classes are really shitty, but there are some fantastic riding schools out there.

The most important thing you will learn there, is how to crash or lay down your bike. I've low sided mine 3 times, and I cant say I would be better off not having had those riding classes. Took them 3 years before I ever really rode a bike (was in highschool, dad wouldnt let me ride his w/o going to a 3 day course etc, and he had not ridden in 20years, so he wanted to go. It was a pretty good time.).

Another saying: If you ride long enough, your going to crash. And its true, I have low sided twice, and been in 2 wrecks.

Rock those flip flops imo*

I don't know about other states, but a motorcycle class is required to obtain a motorcycle license, which you need to ride anything above 49ccs in New Mexico.

Scooter's are fly, someday I'll upgrade mine to a baller looking Vespa.

are you people retarded? v twins are the shit- super torquey and lots of power for a new rider. telling the op to get a (first) bike similar to yours because yours does a 10 second 0-120 just speaks to how bad the advice is that you're giving.

I suggest an 04-07 GSX-750R.

Its easy to strip, not new so when you low side it you dont go broke, light so easy to flip for corners, pretty quick, ideal track bike, fairly cheap, easy to add shit to it, common so easy to get parts...

Meh, it's not like 100+ bhp is uncommon these days. You get that kind of performance (in a straight line) from a cruiser too. And V-twins sound like tug boats, sorry. My favorite tug boat is a late 90s TL1000R. And comparing it to my fav late 90s ZX7R (I like the 90s...) it's really no contest. Even when comparing it to, lets say, a Ducati 1198 which is really beyond Visage pay grade.

The nicest tugboat of them all:

Not a tugboat:

Like I said, the power in those two is pretty much what is expected of a modern cruiser. I bet you're just pissy cause your first bike was laughed at :p.

You don't have to wear a skid suit going to the store. You're right. But you'd be a moron not to wear at least a riding jacket and good shoes with heavier pants. Statistically most motorcycle accidents happen on rides where people go less than a few miles. And it's not always the riders fault for getting in an accident, wearing more gear makes you more visible to the people around you. I've seen people get on bikes and crash at the end of their block when they were "just going to the store." Granted they were not the brightest crayon in the box but neither are the people driving around cars.

oh btw: when it comes to gear, like others have said, wear proper gear. i buy my gear from leatherup.com . great prices, good service and massive selection.

leather jackets "can" cost 300-500 like someone mentioned, but only an uninformed retard would pay that much for one.

never walk into a store to buy motorcycle gear. walk in, get sized for your jacket/helmet/chaps/pants whatever then go online and order it for much much less.

you don't "need" to wear leather, textile is just fine. however you do need to wear a full faced helmet (stay away from modular helmets too) and be sure to cover every part of your body that has skin ...

that means no shorts, no short sleeves, no fingerless gloves. must wear boots (exhaust pipes get damn hot and if your ankle touches the wrong spot you wanna be covered).

you need to (at a minimum) take a basic riding course, often times upon successful completion they will also give you a waver to get your motorcycle endorsement without having to take the state riding test.

You wouldn't be a retard to spend money on a jacket. You CAN spend less, hell, you can buy a textile jacket for $75. But have fun replacing it anytime/every time it gets even the smallest tear in it.

I spent $300 on my jacket and I will most likely never have to replace it. If I get in an accident bad enough where I would have to replace it, I'll most likely be dead or never riding again. I enjoy the fact that I feel protected when I get on my bike.

I hear it's especially enjoyable when the hospital has to pull chunks of asphalt ground leather out of what's left of your skin. Enjoy your cheap jacket lmao.

you completely missed the point. i have both a leather riding padded jacket and a textile, point was to buy the jacket at the right place so you're paying for the product rather than markup (which sound like what you paid).

the jacket i have was marked down from $350 to clear inventory and i got it for $119, so does that make it a $350 jacket or a cheap $119 one? ... maybe i should have bought your $300 jacket for $89.99 ;)

Link to the jacket i have (https://www.leatherup.com/site/product?pid=42524)

so the point is: you do not need to "spend" that kind of money (read: retail) to get the right gear.

of course some people will always feel inadequate if they don't overspend/overkill/over-do things :)

I didn't buy my jacket retail. Don't assume. Just because you found your jacket on sale, doesn't make it any different than mine NOT being on sale. Way to take a moot point and try to flame me over it.

And yeah, judging by the picture you should have bought my $300 jacket for "89.99." Road retards can't see black at night. Bright red, on the other hand....

TL1000R is what I was thinking of earlier.

Either way, prepare yourself for a wreck. Cause they happen. My buddy hit the base of a road construction barrel about a month back (ring had gotten in the middle of the lane of a highway) and he is going to have scars from his knee to shoulder from the slide. And that was only at 55mph and in decent gear.

Another guy got hit by a truck around the same time, he had stuck the nose of his bike too far out trying to see around a cage when making a right turn... truck clipped his bike in the front 1/3, and killed him.

Shit happens.

that's a nice bike, don't get me wrong, but for street riding v-twins are superior for certain type of riding condition because you're just not going to see the right roads everywhere to let an inline four sing. my superhawk (firestorm for you guys i believe) is 122 at the wheel last time it was tuned, and it makes peak torque below 5k rpm. 3rd gear is cruise mode, 10mph roll ons is no problem. tug boat? at idle maybe :) http://youtu.be/9w8FwMTsTFw

as far as riding gear is concerned, textile is cheaper but lasts one crash. for street riding, i wear a less than expensive zippable leather jacket and pants set that have been through 3 sub-35mph falls. i've got a komodo one piece that i can still squeeze into if i ever hit the track again. expensive, but worth every penny if you see the track more than once a month. the amount of protection a one piece suit like that provides over a standard jacket and pants combo is amazing (even if the pants and jacket are able to be zipped together).

also don't underestimate the importance of boots. never ride without your boots. never ride without boots. i've seen two people i've ridden with take a slow speed fall and literally rip their foot off at the ankle, dangling by their achilles tendon. doesn't sound fun huh? wear your damn boots, no matter how clownish you think you look.
