I got the message at the char select screen to update files. i did. now every time i try to open the EQ game shortcut, i get an error message:
"eqgame.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience. if you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost."
i logged out of the game entirely to DL the files, and even rebooted my computer. what can I do to solve this?
edit: I am able load to the char select screen even with the error message up, i just drag it to the bottom corner and do not click "close" - when i do, it shuts down immediately. despite downloading and extracting the files several times over, it still tells me to come DL them on the char select screen. what am i doing wrong? never had a problem with your spell file updates in the past year.

Having the same exact problem.
Windows XP
Service Pack 2
Eqgame.exe will load with just the new spell file to character select where I receive the P99 DLL error. Eqgame.exe will load with the new spell file and eqgame.dll to character select where I get the same P99 DLL error. When placing wsock32.dll into the Everquest directory Eqgame.exe will refuse to load with this error:
Error signature
AppName: eqgame.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: eqgame.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00002483

What OS are you running? Windows XP? Vista? 7? .....dare I say anything older than that? =)

Exact same problem here, Window's xp sv pack 3. Never had a problem before this last patch. If I don't click to close the "eqgame.exe has encountered a problem" window I can get to the character select screen to be told to download the new spell files.

Same problem - fatal error with eqgame.exe upon load. Win XP SP3, Radeon 9800 Pro.

I'm also using an ati card. I've noticed that the shutdown error has something to do with the wsock32.dll file that someone mentioned in another post. If I delete that file, the shutdown error goes away, however it still tells me my spell files are out of date when I get to char login.

I am running XP, Kobias. not sure what service pack but im pretty sure its SP2.
my video card is from 100 years ago, im running a Nvidia Geforce 4400, or possibly it is 5200, regardless it is extremely old. doesnt really give me issues with EQ tho, still very playable.
thank you unbreak, gonna try deleting the wsock
edit: aye, confirmed, with wsock32.dll removed, i get no fatal .exe error, but as unbreakable said - still the DLL error at char select.

I'm still having the same problem after v13. I've noticed, however, that if I delete wsock32.dll, I can log in and play on other servers.

Problem persists after V13 hotfix. I've cleaned the dir of all files needing to be updated and manually moved them over, no go. Installed EQEmu Launcher for the first time - it found and identified a good amount of files to update, including those with the v13 patch, and the errors persist. Fatal error with eqgame.exe upon launch, and a DLL-2 error code if I leave the dialog box up and load into charselect.
I'm re-downloading Platinum now to try a completely clean install using emu launcher. It's rather strange that EMU overwrote the v13 files even after I'd installed the hotfix - is there some reason they would be reverting back to pre-v13 file states when I launch eqgame.exe?
Still unable to load after V13. I have AMD / XP / `NVIDIA 4 MX 440. Hope I don't have to reload. Error shows as soon as it begins loading but goes to faulty Character Screen. Thx

Some of you will need to get a hold of me in IRC and we can try trial and error to troubleshoot this problem. I obviously can't reproduce the issue you are experiencing and there are 800+ people online without the same issue as well.
If you are going to help me figure this out please be somewhat computer savvy.

Okay, those of you with your client immediately crashing after downloading the new files. Please download the following file.. rename it to eqgame.dll, and put it into your EQ Directory (replacing the one that is in there). Let me know if this fixes your problem or not.

Yes Rogean, the new dll file fixed the problem. Was having the same issue with the game crashing immediately(but if you didnt click ok it didnt close) and saying I didnt have the right spell files.
For your reference I am running Windows XP service pack 2 on an ancient AMD Athlon XP 3000+ with 512 MB sdram and onboard graphics card haha.
THANK YOU for fixing the issue! I hope it helps everyone affected.

The fix posted above works on my system. Make sure you rename eqgame-v3.1.dll to eqgame.dll when you place it into your Everquest directory.
Anyone else that the above fix does not work for I would suggest posting your operating system and processor:
Windows XP SP 2
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+ 2.08 GHz
