View Full Version : Character names in wiki pictures

Hello,

I am an avid Wiki user and I sometimes contribute a little bit. One thing that irks me is the inclination to use pictures of a character with the character name included to show an item's graphics. I get it: you're proud of your character and you want him to have all the glory he deserves for his heroics. Now, a wiki is supposed to be an encyclopedia and an encyclopedia is supposed to be neutral (not sure if its the best word, english isn't my first language). There is a place to say what character was the first to obtain this or that item, and I might be fine with (although I would not prefer) a picture of the first character to have obtained an item on a server used for the item's page.

I know I can be a bit rigid sometimes, especially in things concerning knowledge. If the majority prefers to include names, I will be happy to accept that. Has there been a poll or something about the subject? I have no idea how to add a poll to a thread and Google has not been helpful.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Yes, I know I have a picture of Nadoom with its name in the wiki for the Arch Mage's Robe. I will change it ASAP.

Cheers!

IMO include your character or don't, but make sure the item is priorirized visually, like product placement. A lot of weapons are shown at a distance and/or from the front. Can't see shit. Work those camera angles, emote if you must.

If there isn't a picture of the item graphic at all, IMO something is better than nothing. If we ever get to the point where all items with graphics have a picture (good or bad), we can maybe get pickier.

I personally don't really care if the player's name is visible or not. As Ennewi said, try to frame the item graphic as best you can.

Many Luclin/PoP items still have the player graffiti on them.

Anyone who does this is a piece of shit and should be jailed for life.

I don't mind it as long as you don't put the weapon on something dumb like an Iksar Shadow Knight.

It's part of EQ history, I don't mind it.

I don't think anyone enjoys the player-name aspect other than SirEdgeLordWhoPostsIt but this is a free server and a free wiki, so I just deal with the names. Be nice if they all got scrubbed, but unless someone decides to start pushing them all into AI for a good scrubbing, this is unlikely to occur.

Also unless they try to make it look like they were the server 1st (if they werent) for that item, it is OK.
User took the time to supply the piccie afterall.
Itsallgoood.
Also, i dont care about server 1sts, but some do. Let the babies have their bottle.

I completely forgot about the historic part of this. It has indeed always been a part of EQ.

I will continue posting pictures without names, but will also try to be more tolerant of the practice.

Thank you for your input :)

ZAM vanity posts 26 years ago were on-brand as they were building an information database and some of the first info/photos of the items.

The p99 wiki is a blend of a quality corrections/content, humorous ones, and vanity grabbing/propaganda for predominantly sad middle aged men. Pick a lane, just look in the mirror and occasionally check if what you are doing is pathetic.

i think the website emulating the informational database from 26 years ago, should accurately emulate the informational database from 26 years ago. item image graffiti included
