Not only have I ever played p99. This is the first time I'm playing everquest. The lack of information the game gives the player directly is indeed enticing and immersive. But I feel lost at the moment dying to low level mobs probably because I have no idea how this thing works. Was wondering if, while I figure stuff out via the wiki, maybe there would be any guild or community that is willing to take me in and show me around. Would love to get to know you guys and explore this world together :D

Welcome! Very cool to hear you want to try out Everquest. Could you give us some more information, like what class you are, and where your starting city is?

As a few quick tips:

1. /con is your friend. I have it bound to C on my keyboard, but I can't remember if that is the default or not. The color of the text tells you a rough estimate of the mob's level compared to your own.
A. Green means the mob is quite a few levels below you, and probably won't give XP.
B. Blue means the mob is a few levels below you, and will give XP.
C. White means the mob is the same level as you, and will give XP.
D. Yellow means the mob is 1-2 levels above you, and will give XP.
E. Red means the mob is at least 3 levels above you, and will give XP.

Generally speaking you want to fight Blue mobs, especially if you don't have a lot of gear. When you are level 1 the starting area monsters will be white (level 1), and there will be some yellows (level 2) sprinkled in. Stick to killing the white con mobs. There are guards you can run to if you get in trouble, and they will kill the mobs that are chasing you.

2. If you are a primary spell caster (Necro, Wizard, Mage, Enchanter, Cleric, Druid, or Shaman), you will want to save your money for spells above gear, until you get enough money for both. Spells are your main source of power.

3. If you are a melee class (Monk, Warrior, Rogue, Ranger, Shadowknight, Paladin), then gear is more important. The hybrid classes (Ranger, SK, Paladin) need their spells as well, but you won't start to get spells until level 9. You should try to head to the zone called East Commonlands. You will probably get some help and maybe items from players there. That is the zone where everybody does trading. Although much of it is done on discord now.

4. Bards are more like casters (you want to make sure you can buy your spells each level), but early game they will be more melee focused.

5. From levels 1-4 you won't lose XP, so don't sweat dying (assuming your corpse isn't in a location that is hard to return to). After level 4 you will lose XP from dying. From levels 1-30 or so, you don't lose a lot of XP from dying. When you get into the higher levels, you want to start asking other cleric players for a resurrection, which will instantly return most of the XP you lost.

6. When looking at which weapons are the best, one quick way to judge is by "ratio". Divide damage by delay to get the ratio. For example, a 5 damage weapon with 30 delay has a ratio of 5 divided by 30 = 0.16666. The higher the ratio, generally speaking the better the weapon. You can generally find weapons with a 0.5 ratio in EC for cheap (or perhaps free). This kind of weapon can take you to level 20. Be advised there are damage caps for weapons based on your level. From levels 1-9, a weapon with more than 9 damage will be capped to 9 damage. So a 20 damage 40 delay weapon would be the equivalent of a 9 damage 40 delay weapon at level 1. The damage caps are different based on class after level 9. Once you are level 40, there is no more damage cap.

7. Be aware that some classes are harder to start with than others. Warriors and Rogues are going to be difficult to solo with when you don't have a lot of gear. If you aren't playing with a group of friends, consider trying a different class. Caster classes are usually easier to play as your first class. Something like a Druid, Necro, Shaman, or Mage.

Good luck OP. Remember, if you die in game, you die IRL!

Welcome to Norrath :)

Also I initially went for dark elf magician, but i found some info about starting out as a wood elf so I switched to wood elf druid.
