View Full Version : What EverQuest slang would completely confuse modern gamers?

Was randomly thinking about how different MMO language used to be back in classic EQ days.

Stuff like “train to zone,” “camp check,” “twink,” “CR,” even just yelling “INC!”

If someone who only played modern games jumped into P99, what phrases do you think would completely confuse them?

Curious what old terms people forgot about.

the everquest meaning of twink would be very confusing to a modern audience

Yeah that’s a good one. In EQ it was just a low level character stacked with high end gear funded by a main.

Now if someone hears “twink” outside of old MMOs they’d think something completely different.

Funny how the same word can evolve like that depending on the community.

I always thought it was funny that wow players got into the habit of saying "DING!" when the level up sound doesn't sound anything like the EQ ding :)

Was there a name for the trumpet noise? I keep trying to think of general EQ phrases I don't even say anymore but i cant think of any.

I got banned on Quarms for calling a weapon a BBC. Thats how I know their mods weren’t true believers.

Yeah I forgot about that one. Haven’t heard baddie used in that context in forever. EQ had its own little dialect that doesn’t really translate outside the game.

I think MMO's like WoW still use the term DKP for their internal guild currency. MQ, FTE, and Petition Quest are certainly more Everquest/P99 specific.

I brought a few friends recently into the game and it's really just the sheer volume of abbreviations.

But in terms of like, what they mean, I mean everquest is pretty fuckin simple. It wasn't confusing to them to understand that camps are a thing and people do camp checks to see who is where.

The biggest hurdle is not knowing what all the abbreviations mean and what is/isn't common courtesies such as announcing trains. That and the / commands. And the settings menu.

There just isn't really any resources in-game that explain them and you can't access the settings menu without knowing the incantation to do so.

Twink is still a really popular term in WoW. We just clipped a friend a couple of weeks ago because he was talking about how much he loves twinks :D he sounded... fruity as hell. Ding is also very common in WoW.

I think one word that was really popular back in the EQ era... that I don't think I've ever seen anyone use since then would be... "WOOT." Now for all I know maybe Woot is still a commonly used term or phrase, and I'm just out of touch, but from my perspective it's something that went away almost entirely. For a social experiment I'm tempted to just start saying it again to see if my friend group adopts it. A lot of them seem to copy my boomer phrases and words already.

You beat me to it :p kind of glad, I don't want to be that annoying nerd who shows up and tries to fact check everyone. DKP is still very much a thing in WoW unfortunately. It did get banned in Classic WoW about a year ago (https://www.wowhead.com/classic/news/gdkps-will-be-banned-in-fresh-wow-classic-hardcore-servers-350549), but a lot of retail guilds still use it.

I can't believe other gamers use "ding" in games that dont ding (https://www.myinstants.com/media/sounds/everquest.mp3), and don't know where it comes from.
