Luclin Without Luclin

I had a random EQ thought today: have the staff ever commented on the possibility of extending the Project 1999 timeline as if the player had simply not purchased the Luclin expansion? So that would mean no Luclin zones, no AAs, and no focus effects. It would mean the real Blade of Carnage, Eye of Zomm pulling nerf, Luclin upgrades to Magician Pets, 8th Shawl (minus Zephyr of Brell), Iksar Pike/Cudgel/Shackle quests, FT3 Sal Varae, Sleeper's Ancients, DoT stacking, and immunities rather than full MR raid bosses, plus maybe other things I've forgotten.

It's fuckin annoying transferring gear. Or like, I had a set of decent starter caster items, could not for the life of me remember which account with which character it was on so you have to spend like 40 minutes logging in, getting to character select, getting kicked off because of whatever the fuck that error that always happens is, logging BACK in, waiting for whatever the arbitrary timer is for, finally checking one character, repeat ad nauseam.

The existing agreement involves going through luclin iirc. Problem is the end game velious content already pretty much breaks the game and adding in further upgrades without having more difficult encounters to use it on would be a huge issue.

People are already soloing phinny, ragefire, 6 necks, most epic quest mobs, hate minis, etc. We don't need people soloing full blown raid encounters

Some zones from Luclin, LoY, and even later expansions could be used as is, and many more could easily be customized/adapted to P99

The issue isn't the lack of new zones to use, it's the lack of interest by the P99 team. As far as I know Rogean and Nilbog haven't even mentioned doing anything custom at all in well over a decade.

This, as much as I like soloing stuff I don't think what p99 needs is to be further trivialized. Most zones are already empty anyway I'm not sure we need more zones either.

Prolly woulda been a great server (for tiny baby wieners) if it was free and the devs didnt act like total fucksticks.

I’m all for adding SOL, it would give high level players something to do, plus the AAs. I believe it wouldn’t alter the feel all that much. POP would change the game drastically.

On THJ I pulled all of chardok to the prince spawn and used double Fayguard Bladecatcher (https://wiki.project1999.com/Fayguard_Bladecatcher) with proc every swing and repost every hit and it was pretty fun.

I'm not sure that many do dislike Luclin. By the population numbers, EQ only got more and more popular after Velious ... until GoD (I think) when WoW came out.

However, two really important people (the people that make this emulator) feel that the game fundamentally changed in Luclin. I can't speak for them, but I'm pretty sure it's because of factors like ...


one of the game's primary creators left (Brad Mcquaid, aka Aradune)
the game embraced the "hell level" grind to a far, far greater extent (with AAs)
the expansion left Norath, both visually (the new graphics and the alien world didn't look like EQ) ...
... and physically (Paludal Caverns made it so no one went to classic low-level zones, spires made it so people skipped zones they previously had to travel through, etc.)


Again, I think most players were ready for EQ to "evolve" ... but because of that evolution, it really was a big shift vs. Classic-Velious. People who just <3 classic EQ, like the P99 founders, weren't fans.
