Hi Everyone!
Looking to start P99 for the first time! Worried about selecting a "right" class with a "limited" player base especially as a lv 1 no twink no friend start! Any tips?
Thanks in advance!

most people go with starting a druid (can eventually start porting other players for plat) and then using funds acquired w/ said class they will twink out and gear other classes to play. You can achieve similar results with other easy farm classes (nec, mage) but they don't have the luxury of travelling whenever they want like druids / wizards do.

druid can get you from rags to riches faster than other classes, just join dial a port guild. leveling will suck until 14 (charm), and becomes easy at 34 (quadding). even if you don't want to continue leveling a druid past, say, 44 (all teleports), the character will be useful forever for item transfers, camping certain items, buying spells, using harmony, etc.
for soloing hard stuff without gear being a factor: shaman/enchanter

Clerics aren't great plat makers but you'll never be short of a group (if you like grouping) and you're also an undead wizard if you want to go that route :)

Starting a class to make plat is common and terrible advice. This game takes way too long to grind a druid up to 34 (for ports) when you can match that income with any class by simply xping your mid 20's in a good vendor trash zone like Solusek's Eye (Sol A).
Druid - The most convenient class with run speed spells, ports, heals, solo gameplay. Lots of tools and raid support. Mediocre XP/Farm class.
Necro – One of the stronger solo classes. Can DPS for groups. Lots of tools. Strong pet. Not really the best at anything outside of convenient soloing.
Enchanter - #1 solo and plat farmer. Glass cannon. High stress gameplay, can’t leave PC for long without prep.
Cleric - Best duo class to go with ench and best healer. S-Tier in any situation outside solo.
Warrior - Best tank, can dps, most underrated and underplayed class. Needs others
Rogue - Best melee DPS, relaxed gameplay, groups and raids want you. Needs others
Monk – OP melee class. Can DPS and tank with lots of tools. Needs others
Wizard – Best burst DPS, they also have a lot of utility for raids. Weak sustained DPS. Groups don’t like too much. Not great for farming or XP.
Shaman – Second best solo class but has lots of spells and items to get before realizing it. S-Tier duo with Monk. The gear and spell journey can be fun.
I would strongly advise against Pally, Ranger, SK, Mag, Bard for new players because they are gimps and nobody wants them outside of their niche. You would be upset end-game unless you have the experience to know you want one.
If you are new to classic EQ be warned even the best solo class (Ench) will be slow and boring compared to other games. This game is made for groups. Melee classes, even the monk will struggle to solo without twinking.

I retract my statement that Bards are gimped. I would still not recommend them to a new player for many reasons.

An undead-only Wizard ... that can't quad kite. Big difference.
That being said, I've soloed not one but two Clerics into their 50's using the "anti-Undead Wizard" approach, and it is certainly a viable (if a bit slow) alternative to grouping.
Also, it doesn't require much in terms of gear: like any non-Int-caster, a Cleric can benefit from a Fungi, haste item, and low-level-proccing weapon (eg. Velium Crystal Staff) ... but Clerics don't actually need any of that to solo. It just reduces downtime, but a fresh Cleric can easily do without them (and to group you really don't need anything except the clothes you loot).
IMHO the Priest classes (Druid, Cleric and Shaman) are all awesome for new people, as are Magicians, Wizards, and Necromancers. Enchanters aren't bad, but require more skill, and melees are just generally rougher to start fresh (although Monk/Bard are somewhat viable).

If you tell us what playstyle you like mostly solo vs mostly group, caster vs melee, chill vs high APM, people can narrow it down even more. Have fun

Good choice! I started with a shaman - completely self sufficient class.
Drowsy is your best friend.
