View Full Version : Was there a game that got you ready for EverQuest back in 1999-2001?

For me: Tribes RPG.
https://tribesrpg.org/
I played Tribes, the team-based FPS, and fuggin loved it as a kid. Disc Launcher OP. Shazbot!, etc.
But then I saw this mod for Tribes RPG. You WHAT mate? First person RPG? Playing with others on the same server? Sign my 12 year old self up. The graphics were awful. The gameplay was terrible. But there were quests, monsters, and a character progression system.
When Iksars finally made it to EQ (my friend showed me the box art for Ruins of Kunark) I migrated to EQ - and haven't looked back since.
But if it wasn't for Tribes RPG wetting my whistle, and showing me what was possible with RPG games - I would probably not have had the itch to play EQ.
What game was it for you?
anytime someone mentions it, i shall repost this.

didn't play on the rpg servers tho
edit:
to the actual question, not much i only heard about EQ because it literally took over the small gaming shop i played magic at, i bought ultima 9 a couple months prior to EQ coming out strictly off the box art from it sitting on the shelf and the only MUD experience i had prior was like 20 minutes of playing around with LORD inbetween downloading wolfenstein/doom mods from a bbs a couple years prior
and DnD proper i guess, was playing that there so that prepared me the most i'd say for systems and stats and fantasy cliche stuff, like i already knew what a half elf was n shit

Diablo 1 for sure. First game I can recall doing a lan party with. Dying and losing all your crap and having to corpse cannon back to pick it all up. Losing your ring of Jordan and having it rot before you could get it back. Fun stuff.

I remember thinking someone wanting to play Ultima Online instead of going to a birthday party was insane.

Now that brings back memories :) Except, when I started that series it was still called Hero's Quest.

It was basically a cross between a traditional RPG (it had random monster encounters, classes, levels, etc.) and a traditional Sierra adventure game, eg. King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, etc.
The original name was Hero's Quest, to match the Space/King's/etc. Quest games, but Milton Bradley forced them to rename it to Quest for Glory.

Oooh, I forgot to mention some other games which primed me for Everquest - Fighting Fantasy books. They were goood stuff! I think Crossbows and Catapults also primed me for the visual vibe of Everquest - lots of ruins and rotting siege equipment knocking about in Norrath!

Any of you do the Lone Wolf books? Big recommend, way better than sudoku if you haven't ever heard of these and like EQ.

I think I read/played one (Plague Lords of Ruel), but it's been so long I can't be certain. Did it have a grid in the back, and you had to put your pencil randomly somewhere on it to "roll the dice" ?

It had lots of different dungeon crawl expereinces and character sheets you kept track of so it might be, there was no dice rolling so with just a pencil and the book you could play alone under the bleachers was super immersive and awesome too with rad art.
There is some republished ones out now I might try to re get into them.

I'm not sure if I did any of those. Some fighting fantasy books would have a couple of dice on the bottom of each page, so you could flick to a 'random page' as a way of getting random dice results on the go. Not quite as true randomiser as dice, but a good solution nethertheless.

Lone Wolf is kind of in like world of its own. I’ve never seen anything else quite exactly like it and I also meet so few people who have experienced it. I recommend at any stage of your life. I mean reading a book is great so if you like Everest, I strongly recommend picking up book one.

UO for me, god that game was fun during vanilla and the first expansion. Second expansion totally ruined the game and luckily EQ was just about to launch so I ebay'ed my account and never looked back
