Look on the item ID on this thing - it is way out of timeline, no?
https://eqdb.net/item/detail/22761

Currently it is in the catch pool for Erud's Crossing (and maybe Erudin or S Qeynos? I was fishing a while on that boat).

Please delete this unclassic filth (and fix the fishing tables in the needful zones).

Thankyoubye.

Trying to rob people of their fishy meals right after the food change got put in. What a pirate.

Here is a link from 2001 listing the fish, so it's at least in the timeline.

I don't think Weary Wrass are obtainable on P99, unless it's been fixed already.

From Nilbog's link we see mention of a Bloodfin Trout fished from the Lake of Ill Omen. That one is missing from the P99 database query.

Reeled in a ton of bloodfin trouts in Lake of Ill Omen; they sold for a little over two times as much as fresh fish.

Re: New Fish Found

Some of these, (like the gunthak makeral) have been around for a while, but most are new. Also, A new fish i just caught in the Lake of Ill Omen is the bloodfin trout, sells for 4.5 silver each to vendors with 70 charisma, is edible and i caught them every time with a skill of around 140 (can't remember exactly).

It was apparently removed from the lake in summer 2002 (https://web.archive.org/web/20020811041601/http://eqtraders.com:80/location/fishing_zone.htm), but should be fishable in P99's timeline.

Zone items reeled in
...
Lake of Ill Omen none (Bloodfin Trout used to be available in this zone, but now appear to be extinct)
...

A fair number of the zone-specific fish were added in Mar2001, a few others in Sept2000. Do any have era flags set?

-----

The Salt Minnow shouldn't be fishable on P99. It's part of the long-broken Hollow Skull/Skull of Torment quest.

Salt minnow was not in game for a long time, however popped up on test early May 2003 ( mboards.eqtraders.com/php...3057#53057 )

The May 14 2003 patch included this info, at this time Salt Minnow was thought to have entered the live servers.

- Added Honey Mush Bread to Cabilis Vendors - This is an item needed for a quest that was unavailable.
- The Skull of Torment quest - This quest, in Kurn's Tower, should now work.

I can confirm that Salt Minnows are live - I caught two of them on E'Ci today after the patch.

I already had some Zombie Skin and a Bixie Honeycomb ... however the combination of:

Zombie Skin
Zombie Skin
Honeycomb
Salt Minnow

was a DNC in the Cabilis oven. I'm still looking for "Zombie Flesh" ... anyone ever seen it?

Our per-zone fishing implementation currently has no functionality for 'rule-basing' eras. I'll work on getting this added.

Itemizing fish per zone (and rules) would probably be a good crowd source/research project due to the limited scope.

If there are any changes needed, for example an item wasn't able to be fished until X date, it can be reported like:

butcher Saltwater Seaweed Sep2000.

This one caught my eye because I believe that is used in dyes, and possibly needs a rule attached.

The fishing system itself was in bad shape, and I made many other changes while I was working on this. Those will be reported in other threads.

I was working through some merchant items, so I just made a new sheet:

As far as I can tell, there were 3 main eras of fish expansion: Apr2000, Sept2000, and Mar2001 (+PoM). Zone-specific fish were first released with Kunark. Sept2000 saw the addition of the tackle box, lure and fish egg recipes, and a few fish (salmon/mackerel) used in those fish egg recipes. Then in Mar2001, we see unique fish being added to a number of Old World and Velious zones.

From Allakhazam's early fishing page:

As far as I can tell, you can catch one of four things: a generic fish (worth about 2 silver pieces), a fish scale (worth about 4 copper pieces), a rusty dagger (worth about 1 ½ silver pieces) or a tattered shoe (worth about 1 silver piece).

Some of the Kunark dungeon fish were added to EQTraders over time.
Nov2000 - https://web.archive.org/web/20001119180700/http://www.eqtraders.com/location/fishing.html
Mar2001 - https://web.archive.org/web/20010306023001/http://www.eqtraders.com:80/location/fishing_zone.htm

(You can browse later captures using the Mar2001 link)

I suspect they were actually released with the launch of Kunark though. We see more or less what we would expect to see in terms of discovery: fish found at entry points to the continent (Timorous Deep, Overthere, and Firiona Vie), Iksar starting areas (Cabilis, SoNH, Warslik's), and the first 50+ leveling dungeons (CoM and Karnor's). Nurga shows up next. That Sebilis and Chardok appear last isn't too surprising.

Mar2001

The primary source I found for the March2001 additions was a thread on the EQTraders board. Three pages captured:
- https://web.archive.org/web/20020116131401/http://pub13.ezboard.com/feqtraderscornerfrm55.showMessageRange?topicID=18. topic&start=21&stop=40

A helpful check that these were in fact new (for some of Velious zones at least) comes from another thread. CodFest2001, three pages captured:
- https://web.archive.org/web/20010409210538/http://pub13.ezboard.com/feqtraderscornertailoring.showMessage?topicID=816. topic
- https://web.archive.org/web/20010422115818/http://pub13.ezboard.com/feqtraderscornertailoring.showMessageRange?topicID =816.topic&start=21&stop=40

Tradeskillers were looking for Cobalt Cod to make the oil needed for Arctic Wyvern armor, so they fished all over Velious and reported their findings. No cod or any other unique fish was caught (late Feb2001 and again in early Mar2001).

Misc

This thread (https://web.archive.org/web/20020128020424/http://pub13.ezboard.com/feqtraderscornerfrm55.showMessage?topicID=131.topi c) documented zones without any unique fish.

Also, I saw in the research comments about requiring a specific skill to catch certain items (i.e. >= 100).

If these are documented anywhere, would be useful. We use a placeholder value, but have the ability to differentiate.

On that note, we also have the ability to provide a 'chance' per item, which is calculated when deciding the weight chance to produce the item vs the total of the 'pool'. So, if something was known to be exceptionally rare to catch, we can do that.

FV Fishing Trip (Fetid Bass Findings)

I burnt through 7 stacks of bait in FV yesterday at skill 168-175, and thought I'd post what I found about the fish there.

It looks like there's one fetid bass there for every weight from 0.1-2.5, plus the rare Fresh Fish and that No Drop fish (Sewer Catfish?). The tiny, large and giant Fetid Bass were much less common for me than the others. About 15% of my catch were feast-classed fish.

Here's how they're named and how sustaining they are:

wt 0.1 = a tiny Fetid Bass, snack
wt 0.2 = a 2lb Fetid Bass, meal
wt 0.3 = a 3lb Fetid Bass, meal

Subject: RE: What can you get fishing?

You get many interesting types of fish from the waters in Kunark. You get many different weights of their fetid bass, while pretty cool can be quite a pain cause they dont' stack unless they are the same weight. Also Sewer Catfish, Timorous Tuna, small fetid bass, and the usual fresh fish, daggers, and sandals happy.gif I hear you can catch different stuff in OOT too.

Using Lures, i was catching Fetid Bass that actually showed the weight,
ranging from '2 lb Fetid Bass' to '17 lb Fetid Bass'. When i used regular old
bait or foraged grubs i got a less descriptive Fetid Bass like 'a small Fetid Bass'
or 'a large Fetid Bass'. I wonder if the Lures give you a different fish or if this
was just coincidence.

These are the only two comments I could find that reference it though, and there would still be a question of how much it weighed.

Also, I found a live capture of page 3 of the "New Fish Found" thread (https://web.archive.org/web/20040117160304/http://pub147.ezboard.com/feqtraderscornerfrm55.showMessageRange?topicID=18. topic&start=41&stop=60) on a different ezboard subdomain. It confirms a couple more fish added (Grotto Bluegill, Hatch Dace, Red Roughy).

A few small notes

- Fishing is indeed capped by level. Makes sense doesn't it? I mean we don't want any lowbie twinks powerfishing our salmon, do we?

- I haven't found any catch that really requires skill. As far as I've seen, all catches are just percentages in whatever areas they appear at all.
My smith is a level 5 human and fishes all the saltwater seaweed in pretty decent time - about 1 catch in 10.
The only things I think skill affects is how often you catch anything at all and how well you succeed with the tackle box.

- The only plausible effect of using exceptional baits is as a bonus to skill, i.e. it makes you catch more faster. The increase is pretty small though.

- Cenlad, Bertoxx

I believe the equation for level-capped skills is (5 x Level) + 5. If so, that would cap a level 5 character at 30.

You recieved it while fishing - I fished one up while boating from Kaladim to Freeport - nobody in the game has any idea of what it is or what it does. It is a Lore item, and no drop. When you fish it up you get the message "You caught a fish" - I got it when I reached 20 skill in fishing.

I have fished up a number of these items, this saltwater seaweed. It is No Drop so you can't sell it (though if info is correct and this stuff is used to make Sea Temper which is for Human cultural armor, then maybe you could sell the sea temper for a decent amount, seeing as how most people don't take up fishing). My fishing is at a 98 now, and i'm catching more and more of these No Drop items, the saltwater seaweed. I keep destroying them as I am a Dark Elven Necromancer of the 23rd season. They take up too much inventory space as they don't stack, and you can't sell them as they are No Drop. I will attempt to make this sea temper to see if it works (though not till much later when i can actually hunt seafury cyclopses to get the mugs of sea foam). We shall see what happens, though i hate losing bait to something that is seemingly worthless.

I myself went to brother island to start making fishing lures (made 1 already), since I didn't have any skill in fishing (as of yet) I decided to do just that. I bought 40 bait and pole and started to catch Gunthak Mackeral, Fresh Fish, Scaled Fish, Daggers, Sandles and the Saltwater Seaweed. Too bad it cost U a bait to catch something U can't eat (I have 8 of them already). My suggestion is if brewing is required, then start doing it. Get the other ingredients from other players (if u can) and try to make the end reault from the previous posts then sell them to the Blacksmiths. If U don't feel like putting in the time, then just destroy them and venture on to other things. I myself am going to destroy them so i can put something else in the vacant slots. Makes more sense.

Yep, gotta agree with this. Pre 100 I have caught a lot of "not-fish" specials, particularly in OOT.

In Kunark, with 80-99 skill I have also caught all 3 of the "special" Fetid Bass, and the Sewer Catfish.

I did email screenshots to Niami for inclusion on the page. That was a while back though, and they are probably on her pile of things to do still.

Come to think of it, if Niami or anyone who looks after the page wants/needs screenshots send me an email.

What do i get at (200) fishing skill?

EverQuestsDaBest
Sep 18, 2001, 6:45:31 AM

I am assuming the skill max for fishing is 200, if not, assume my question
means the highest skill for fishing.

I just recently started fishing, and got my skill to (9), and i seem to catch
something 1 out of every 5-10 casts. Im curious, i caught rusty daggers, fish,
somethin called timorous tuna, not worth much, but cool to get for free.

My question is, what kind of things do you catch if your skill is the highest u
can get in fishing? Thanx
GP
Sep 18, 2001, 3:29:26 PM

from a post on my guild board:

Like foraging, fishing only counts if it's 101 or better, before then
you can't get rares (like the Seaweed for Sea Tempers, or the Cobalt
Cods for Cod Oil, or the Iceclad Cutlassfish for the Shawl quest). For
those that don't know, normal races need 101 or better foraging to
forage rares (like Oak Bark and Drake Eggs), except for Iksar who can
all forage, have 50 skill that never goes up and can always forage rares
(though they fail to get anything at all lost of times, due to low
skill).

The above comment suggests that the "skill >= 100 to catch special fish/items" misconception may have been informed by zone-specific foraging mechanics.

Hi!
What is the EFFECT of increasing your fishing skill? More catches per cast, more expensive catches, larger skill numbers (lol)? I have read several articles on Fishing and most seem to concentrate on lures or be written for "Old hands" so there are no details.

Re: I have to ask. I have only been fishing one day

As far as I can tell, it's more catches per cast (I rarely don't get anything at a skill of 200).
Possibly there are also less "trash" (sandals, scales, rusty weapons), but I'm not sure about that (it's been a very long time since I caught a rusty weapon though).
It would be nice if increased skill increased the chances of catching "rares" (like the sea weed in the Ocean of Tears or the salmons in the Karanas), but I haven't seen much support of that hypothesis.
Verdandi Snowblood

Re: I have to ask. I have only been fishing one day

My own experience has been that as your skill increases, you have less casts that don't catch anything, you get less shoes and rusty daggers, you lose your bait less, and you get more of the rare fish in zones that have more than one possible fish. When fishing in Firiona, I also seemed to get more of the bigger sized ones than I had with less skill.

This is all based on just my own observations so it's possible that it may have just been my imagination or the whim of my RNG. But I started fishing at level 5 and just hit 196 fishing the other day at level 54, so at least it's been plenty spread out :)

I think it's safe to say that a minimum skill level was not required for zone-specific catches. It's unclear whether skill increased the chance of a zone-specific catch, however. If higher skill increases the chance of successful catches generally and decreases the chance of catching junk, as seems to be the case based on the other fishing bug threads, then a higher skilled character would likely end up with more zone-specific fish caught than a lower skilled character for a given number of casts. That is to say, skill level wouldn't need to directly influence the chance of a special catch to end up with more special catches.

Currently each DB fishing entry is set to a base skill of 50+. This affects everything that is not common junk/fresh fish.

Based on your researched posts, this doesn't seem to be correct, so I guess the question is should there be a minimum skill required for any fished item.

The above post about fishing using an ice hole in the tundra reminds me of a p99 bug - you can fish on any of the floe, you don’t need to use a hole in the ice. According to the above that isn’t right. Holes only for fishing!*

I've not seen mention of particular fish/items having a specific skill requirement to catch.

Shadaria was able to catch all of the items in Ocean of Tears starting from no skill using 40 bait. I don't how many skill-ups they gained in 40 casts, but it probably wasn't many (maybe 4-5 at most?). They do mention experimenting with lures which can raise your fishing skill, but had they skilled up making a bunch of lures beforehand, they could have fished with those instead of buying the bait.

EverQuestsDaBest also mentions catching a Timorous Tuna, the special catch in Timorous Deep, by skill level 9.

Catching specialty fish with a 14 skill!

Last night I went fishing to replace my plummeting supply of muffins. At the docks of Erudin I caught fresh fish as one would expect. However, when I went fishing next to the bridge over the river in Toxx, I caught nothing but Greengill Salmon. No daggers, sandals, or scales, just salmon. The weird thing is my skill went from (14) to (15) in this time. I thought you could only catch those other fish with over (100) skill.

Thought fishers might like to be notified. Oh, and this happened on Xev.

Greengill Salmon is the standard fish in Tox; I've never caught anything else there at any level of skill. Many zones now give you some named fish instead of Fresh Fish. Kinda makes it hard to make those Fish Rolls while adventuring :(

I caught at least 6 saltwater seaweeds while sitting on the docks on the island in OOT where the tackleboxes and hooks are sold, and my Magician had a Fishing skill of around 20 (possibly less) at the time. Since they're No Drop, I was forced to destroy all of them.

Re: 43 in Fishing

It seems that your fishing skill only effects how often you catch something... not what you can catch. Someone who went into PoV to catch me a valorian discus went in with 0 skill and had no problems catching it, but it took him an hour to get one (had 18 skill when he caught one). Higher fishing skill speeds up the process of getting a special fish, but there's no minimum skill to catch them.

Hello all,

To all appearances, there is no minimum skill level for catching the zone specials, at least not as a group -- I caught some myself with fishing less than 50, and have seen reports of some caught much lower than that.

That said, it's possible that *certain* zone-specific fish actually require a minimum fishing level; I don't think that's been convincingly established, and I don't remember seeing any official word from anyone at SOE.

As a tailor, I've taken several friends and guildmates with me to fish for Cobalt Cod in Cobalt Scar. At least a few of these had never fished before in their (EQ) lives and still managed to catch Cod and Dragonbay Snapper.

So, at least in CS, there is no minimum level required.

Also, as alluded to in the comments from Albavar and mcdermit, it appears the special fish introduced in the Sept2000 and Mar2001 fishing expansions actually replaced the Fresh Fish on the table. This seems to have lasted until the Nov. 7, 2001 patch. Do you want me to collect what I've found on this, Nilbog, or do you want to leave it as is?

If you want to post the research, I will review it. One issue/risk I can think of is, if the 'special' db items replaced fresh fish, we won't know what % chance modifications were made against catching the items vs junk during this timeframe. Our server code won't look anything like what existed or exists on eqlive.

Saltwater Seaweed is certainly fishable in OoT from what we've seen. The earliest evidence for it appearing in Timorous Deep that I've come across so far is from Nov2001, shortly after the Nov. 7 patch.

Saltwater Seaweed now in TD...?

Was working my SK's fishing up while waiting on the Kunark boat, on Ogre Isle, when what appears on my cursor but a Saltwater Seaweed! And then, with a full stack of bait, I proceed to fish up 3 more (!) Egads! Now I have to hold them, get my brewing up and then get some Seafoam to make temper for my Human Cleric.

Or maybe I missed the addition... I certainly missed the boat...

The patch did mess with forage and fish tables, so there's a good chance it really was added then. Timorous Deep was one of the original zones with special catches. It seems odd that Timorous Tuna would be documented for so long, but not the seaweed.

As for it being fishable in Butcherblock or Firiona Vie, I've seen no mention of that in-era. Really the only thing I found, even out-of-era, was from the live Allakhazam page for Saltwater Seaweed (https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=5618). Interestingly, there is further comment of it being fishable in Timorous Deep, but still no player comment of it coming from BB or FV.

The oldest archived version of the page I could find that included all four zones was from 2002 (Last updated: Thu Sep 19 18:52:47 2002 (https://web.archive.org/web/20021104063831/http://everquest.allakhazam.com:80/db/item.html?item=5618&start=0)). The page also includes the following:
Fished in any ocean zone.

This is definitely not true and calls the zone information into question, in my opinion.

A modern capture of EQTraders (https://web.archive.org/web/20220701163025/https://eqtraders.com/items/show_item.php?item=5247&menustr=110055000000) (the live site has been having db issues) only lists Saltwater Seaweed being fished in Ocean of Tears and Timorous Deep.

Anyway, I've been hanging out in Erud's Crossing a lot the last week helping a friend with the plague shark for her Ro Vambraces, and have done some fishing there both to get scales and to pass time. Besides catching a lot more junk than I used to (sandals and daggers), I have caught two kinds of fish there...Fresh Fish and Timorous Tuna. I have not gotten any Barren Flounder, the fish that is listed on the zone-specific fishing page for this zone. It appears the recipes were patched in a bit earlier, as players started to discover them through experimentation (https://web.archive.org/web/20020713223240/http://pub126.ezboard.com/feqtraderscornerbrewing.showMessage?topicID=754.to pic). I think the book itself was added in the May 8 patch.

Note: This was originally posted in the Pottery forum, it's a list of essences from a new book, read more about it in his post over there.

Edit: It's got those barren flounders that were a guess for the Odus essence on the list! Where the heck DO those things come from?!?

I'm not sure this is worth recreating given that it's sorted out by the end of the timeline, but this is what I found.

That may have been true a while ago, but Verant is adding all kinds of
'specialty' fish. Now, most zones do NOT drop fresh fish, they drop something
like Surefall Carp or Thunder Salmon or Bony Fish. Currently, many of these fish
are NOT directly edible and do not work with known recipes. Plus, there is the
advantage of being able to get experience by hunting bears, cats etc while
getting food, while fishing is a void.

Re: Hello and Questions

Well met!

Special fish are zone-specific. At one point, it did seem that your chance of catching zone-special fish was determined by your fishing skill, but this is no longer the case.

Many zones now have special fish. In many cases, those fish seem to have totally replaced fresh fish. You can find a list of what zones have special fish now by going to the Trade Supplies section of the site. There's a link there for the zone-specific fishies. :)

Hound Pike in Black Burrow

Hi All! I've been enjoying and gleaning info from the message boards here for a few weeks as I learned the game, and finally mastered Fishing and caught my first special fish!

While attempting to complete the Monk Orange Headband Quest, I did some fishing in the bowels of Black Burrow and caught Hound Pike exclusively with a skill of 101 to 103.

Hit rate seemed to be about the same as fresh fish elsewhere. On the other hand, I was able to sell the Pike for about 1/3 more than ordinary fresh fish. I didn't try baking with them.

I also caught some humorous comments from those getting aggro'd by gnolls as I sat there calmly fishing! Heh heh!

Got my headband, so packing up the fishing gear and looking for new waters in the Karanas ...

Good Luck to my fellow fishing fanatics!

You can also add a Rygorrian fish (can't remember exact name at the moment) that is fished in Eastern Wastes now. I fish while medding there and never caught one before and as of the last patch it is the ONLY type of fish I can catch there.

Hmmm. Does anyone else find it odd/ill-advised to not have these unique fish -- which are otherwise quite cool -- not work in all ways as fresh fish do? (OK, maybe not the fetid bass. Yuck!)

I'd have starved if all I caught during my youth were Ak'Anon Koi, it seems.

Hopefully that'll be stage two of them adding these new fish to the game.

Hole is nothing but special fish

This thread (https://web.archive.org/web/20040117142104/http://pub147.ezboard.com/feqtraderscornerfrm55.showMessage?topicID=193.topi c) provides some good discussion on fishing in Cobalt Scar before and after the patch.

From the Nov. 7, 2001 patch:
Foraging and Fishing will now result in a wider variety of items, especially in zones that have unusual items available to forage or fish (such as quest items). Quest and unique items were too common in zones that had them, often making it hard to use those skills to obtain items such as food and drink. These quest and rare items will now actually be rarely foraged or fished, as they should have been. Such items will still be available, even to those with low foraging skills, but they will be more easily found by those who have practiced the skills.

While not exhaustive, the above list provides a decent sampling of zones between Mar2001 and Nov2001.

The fact that these Old World and Velious zones were now producing unique fish exclusively also casts the effort to document which zones still produced fresh fish in a new light. No doubt players were making sure they didn't miss any new additions, but they also wanted to know where they could still find fresh fish that would work with existing baking recipes.

Kunark Zones and Ocean of Tears

It seems these zones were largely unaffected and had both Fresh Fish and Zone-specific fish after the Mar2001 patch as before. The exception may have been zones where an additional unique fish was added.

Re: Broken poles at higher skill level

I fished lastnight for about 5 hours while auctioning. I was able to catch:

194 Fresh Fish
21 Danak Grouper
4 Ruined Sandel thingies
2 Rusty Daggers
2 Fish Scales

Then my rod broke. It seems like fishing is based on rolls. It's a set delay. You have the chance to:

Very Bad Roll - Break your rod
Bad Roll - Lose your bait
Low Roll - Spill your beer and not catch anything
Medium Roll - You caught something (Scales, Daggers, Sandels)
Average Roll - Fresh Fish
High Roll - Zone Specific Fish

My skill is maxed at 200. I rarely break a pole, but sometimes I break them quite often. I blame it on low rolls. It's just like when you're a master of baking and fail on a low trivial item. As your skill increases, poles breaking happens less and less.

What do i get at (200) fishing skill?

I am assuming the skill max for fishing is 200, if not, assume my question
means the highest skill for fishing.

I just recently started fishing, and got my skill to (9), and i seem to catch
something 1 out of every 5-10 casts. Im curious, i caught rusty daggers, fish,
somethin called timorous tuna, not worth much, but cool to get for free.

My question is, what kind of things do you catch if your skill is the highest u
can get in fishing? Thanx

Doh, Nannek beat me to it. Spent some time in City of Mist today fishing while waiting for a raid that never happened :( The other fish in the zone is indeed Ikfish (can remove the spelling question mark on the zone specific fishing chart).

From the early fishing page at Allakhazam, we see Ikfish fishable in CoM from Kunark release. This poster's phrasing suggests only two fish in the zone. The addition of the Fogwater Trout may have replaced the Fresh Fish.

Well drat. I posted this on the topic about recipes using special fish and a skinning knife in a tackle box. It also applies here. This is what I got from "skinning" the fish I caught.

My results from tonight (some are repeted entries):

Gunthak Macherel (from Ocean of Tears) - 5 bait
Fresh fish (1, 2, and 3 of them) - nada
Rivervale Trout (from Rivervale. 1, 2 and 3) - nada
Stonefish (from Butcherblock. 1, 2 and 3) - nada
Timorous Tuna (from Timorous Deep. 1 and 2) - nada
Despair Chub (from Swamp of No Hope. 1 and 2) - nada
Bloodfin Trout (from Lake of Ill Omen. 1, 2 and 3) - nada
Evergreen Salmon (from Warslik's Woods) - 2 fish eggs and 2 scales

In Lake of Ill Omen, Butcherblock and Swamp of No Hope I never caught fresh fish.

After 10 attempts at fishing in the ocean on the north shore of the Field of Bone and the Overthere I caught only fresh fish.

The above would suggest that Ocean of Tears, Timorous Deep, and Warslik's Woods did produce Fresh Fish.

I was fishing in the Swamp of no hope (skill of 130) when i realized i wasn't catching a single fresh fish. Instead i was catching a dispair cod and the krup guppy. has all fresh fish left the swamp?

This reads as if Krup Guppy and Fresh Fish were fishable prior to Mar2001. The Despair Chub then replaced the Fresh Fish with the patch.

There is some question about Nurga. We see the Cave Guppy being added early on, with the Sponge Mushroom added later. I'm not sure if the mushroom replaced Fresh Fish or not.

Toxxulia Forest and The Karanas

We've seen comments after the Mar2001 patch that mention unique fish replacing Fresh Fish in the Karanas and Toxxulia Forest. Given that unique fish were added to these zones earlier than the others, I wondered if their tables changed in Mar2001.

Here Fishy Fishy Fishy!

Posted @ Mon, Jan 29th 11:53 PM 2001

The fishing frenzy has begun. A minimum of 60 bait have been thrown into each of the following bodies of water. I have had a fishing skill in excess of 150 for all those casts. And yes, yes... I *do* smell awful, and no, no... my guildmates do *not* want any more fish to eat.

Results for Odus:

Local Fish Other Garbage
Toxxulia Greengill Salmon Shoes, Daggers, Fish Scales
Kerra Ridge Fresh Fish Shoes, Daggers, Fish Scales
Erudin Docks Fresh Fish Shoes, Daggers, Fish Scales
Paineel Pond Fresh Fish Shoes, Daggers, Fish Scales
Erud's Crossing Fresh Fish Shoes, Daggers, Fish Scales

Results for Antonica (so far):
East Karana Thunder Salmon Shoes, Daggers, Fish Scales
Rivervale Fresh Fish Shoes, Daggers, Fish Scales

I have also spent some amount of time "hunting" in each of these locations, however fish hunting is a boring endeavor (YOU try to chase tiny little fish using sense animal and/or camping the ever-joyous single Razorfish spawn in Kerra). I'll keep squishing every fish I see, but there are limits to my madness!

I'd love to hear if anyone else has made concentrated efforts in any zones. I did spend about 20 bait in OOT, and did fish up the Seaweed. And yes, I have the meat from Kelorek D'ar. Its just the Roe, the miserable awful terrible caviar!

My current theory is that if I were a game designer, a swamp would be a good place to put fish roe, followed closed by Timorous Deep -- perhaps on those eel-like fishies that lurk where Faydedar does.

Righto! Back to the slaughter...
-= Ashwith Fairfever
-= L59 Luminary, Shadows of the Unseen, Quellious

This comment pre-dates the Mar2001 additions and suggests that the two salmon replaced the fresh fish when they were added in Sept2000. In other words, the Mar2001 patch doesn't seem to have altered the fishing tables of these zones.

Kerra Ridge

The mention of Fresh Fish in Kerra Ridge also raises a question about the Kerra Catfish. It appears it really was added in the Mar2001 patch as suggested in the "New Fish Thread" linked previously.

Interestingly, I haven't found a write-up for the quest requiring a Kerra Catfish anywhere except the wiki: Wislen Mamluk's Catfish (https://wiki.project1999.com/Wislen_Mamluk%27s_Catfish). The page was only added in 2020 and was apparently sourced from P99 itself. I did the quest on P99 and confirmed it works as described.

The earliest reference to Wislen's dialogue that I've encountered comes from Vaslin's Compendium. I used version 2.4.0 (https://web.archive.org/web/20001015174310/http://www.eqcaster.com:80/) (Latest Additions: Feb. 14, 2001). The link on the page lists version 2.3, but the file lists 2.4.0.

Wislen Mamluk says 'Why you bother Wislen? Wislen trying to get fishies. Leave Wislen alone to get the [fish] please.

Wislen Mamluk says 'Fish. Wislen fish. Wislen is mamluk, not just fisher. Mamluk is warrior but they also helps provide for all kerran. This is hadi place in life. We happy doing this. Please, let me fish now.

Notably, the keyword to advance the quest, kerran, isn't bracketed in the transcript, but on P99 it is.

A later comment notes the same:

As there were no further bracketed text items, I left at that point in the conversation.

From the ShowEQ dumps (https://github.com/dbsanfte/eq-archives/tree/master/npc_dumps) we see that Wislen was new with the revamp to Kerra Ridge in Apr2000. That is when zone-specific fish were introduced, so maybe the plan was to add one to Kerra as well. The lack of brackets might suggest the quest was left unimplemented. On the other hand, not all prompts have brackets, so it may have existed but been broken until the catfish was added.
