Early gear for iskar shaman

Hi everyone. A couple of years ago I stumbled on a playlist of old videos of someone playing an Iksar Shaman and I've finally convinced myself to just bite the bullet and start playing one myself on P99 green.

My only other EQ experience is a short foray on Quarm as an enchanter but I found the camera bugs and overall feels felt a little 'off' for me. I like the feel of longevity (and Iksars) I get from P99 Green.

At the moment I'm trying to figure out the best way to get some early gear for leveling. A lot of the older guides are awesome with lists of weapons / armors however a lot of these drop from high level mobs and are very expensive. I'm wondering if anyone has a list of cheap or early quest gear that I might be able to aim for?

I don't mind grinding out whatever I need to over the next few months to build up a good low-level base before I start grinding in earnest I think it'd just be fun to have some short-term goals while I do.

Set of banded is very fine AC for the first 20+ levels and costs nary 100pp.

Gold, platinum and velium fire wedding rings also are very nice and suit various price points.

For weapons this server is spoiled - it is easy to find a 1:2 dmg delay weapon (or better) for 100pp or less. The meme choice, accordingly tad more expensive, is the poison wind censer.

Only pick up your key spells which you’ll use plenty without replacing. Something like snakeskin is more trouble than it is worth!

If you need something even more basic, look up bristlesilk, scaled curskin, padded, reinforced rhinohide and burynai hide. You’ll have access to these early levelling up in field of bone and kurn’s tower.

Forest hammer commonly rots in warslik’s wood.

Iksar berserker club is a decent weapon for a starter in kurn’s tower.

Is selling bone frags still a good way to get some early plat for this? My only issue with this is I'd need buyers to come to me as Iksar I think

Being in kunark will definitely work against you, when it comes to trying to sell bone chips. Most people arne't gonig to want to travel too much to obtain them.

Early kunark zones are lousy with skeletons. Kurns tower is 90% Skeletons. And the only people that are going to need them are NECRO/SK, and others leveling in the region will likely be flush with bone chips before level 20.

I would personally collect them for later sale, and as you travel through the region, keep an eye on who is in the zone with you. When you see gnome, human, dark elf necros etc, message them and let them know what you have.

The first and most important thing you should do is join Ancient Blood. It is an all iksar guild filled with some of the kindest people on the server. They are a wonderful gateway to establishing your shaman.

Would strongly recommend rolling ogre over Iksar. While Iksar has nice regen, the shaman class has access to as much or more regen as any class in the game. Additionally Iksar cannot wear some good shammy gear, most notably the JBB (Jaundiced Bone Bracer), one of the most useful shaman items in the game from 45-60. Additionally their frontal stun immunity makes ogre shammy best in class at lvl 60 where regen doesn't really matter once you obtain torpor.

I bring that up because it also addresses your concern regarding location. Trading between players is done in east commonlands in the Tunnel on this server. The benefit to going there is that you will often find people willing to give away lower end gear for free to new players and this is where you can find cheap items to buy as well.

Generally the best way to raise funds are to sell common items that are used for low level exp quests. I'm not familliar what that equivilant is for Iksar but some common ones are the belts/shoulderpads in crushbone or the deathfist belts that drop off the orcs in EC and other nearby areas.

I did consider the whole race thing quite a bit but what drew me to playing EQ in the first place was how cool Iksar are I can't betray my lizard heritage

It's not highly debatable. It's quite easy to see how much benefit you get from racial regeration mathematically.

The difference between Ogres and Iksars at level 60 is 8 HP/Tick standing up. Topror gives you 300 HP/Tick. 8/300 is 0.026. You are getting a measly 2.6% increase to your Torpor regeneration as an Iksar. You are trading JBB and FSI for that. Not a good trade.

Torpor Shamans will Torpor + Cannibalize back to full HP/Mana if they want to be efficient, rather than sitting and recovering. Effiency is what we are measuring when looking at what is best, not preference.

People can read the guide in my signature for a more detailed explanation as to why Ogre is the best Shaman race. The posters that argue racial regeration is the best for Shamans at level 60 with Torpor have no such equivalent detailed explaination.

Not really. I am just reposting the appropriate information for new players. The only people who get taunted are the trolls, as they don't like peole discussing the game in a factual manner. That's why you're here I imagine.

DSM is correct, however I like the extra regen and don't mind spending the extra time getting to 60. If you're smart you can work around when a mob might stun you and that's good enough for me.
