Well, I just relived mine tonight. I feel asleep in my reclining chair again, notebook computer on my lap, headphones still on, slightly entranced by the sound of thunder and rain...and the occasional howling beast in the distance.

Well all of a sudden I am woken by the soft approaching rumblings of a Hill Giant... before I could come to my senses, that big basturd was pummeling me into the ground while shoving my pet neatly into a space he doesn't belong... anyone know a good proctologist??

I spent a day or two as a level 34 feeding my pet Iron Rations every 20 minutes upon the advice of Transcendence. Thanks guys.

I remember at some point getting a Mistmoore group and running through Lfay and getting owned by some camp on the south end of the zone. I ran all the way back (from Freeport), got an invis in Mistmoore, and then went and looted my corpse in the exact spot I found it. I got to run back again and learned my lesson on that one.

I'm such a noob, I still do all kinds of dumb shit. I didn't even know how to remove someone from group until like 6 months ago. When I wanted someone out of my group I would always just reform it without them.

*edit*
I also deathlooped in KC on the third day of Kunark and accidentally looted 3 of my 5 naked corpses prematurely. Pretty stupid.

My very first death in EQ was drowning in the tiny Kaladim fountain on my newly-made level 1 dwarf because I couldn't figure out how to swim out of it. I seem to recall frantically pushing random keys and looking through the manual as my character's breath ran out.

You mean like lately or ever? I do dumb stuff all the time, ask any cleric that knows me.

Yesterday morning I clicked the white shield spell and ran into KC, but aggroed the Drolvargs. After zoning I realized I had cast "see invis". Sorry anyone who was at zone, TT.

And then followed it up by "camping" at KC zonein, but forgot to hit camp or something. Six hours later a guildmate posted on the forum that I was online and my corpse timer was almost up. And I was bound in DL, at a spot without roamers but not necessarily safe. For all I know I was deleveled back to a noob. And I was stuck at work irl on top of it and helpless. Thanks to Uthgaards help I don't appear to be any worse for the wear.

For me, way back when I first played in 1999, I discovered autofollow....in Kelethin.

A friend of mine joined EQ in 2000, and made a Wizard. He got to level 12 and got Bind Affinity. He thought it was a good idea to bind himself in the middle of an EC orc camp. Later that night he fell asleep at his keyboard. He woke up level 8 getting a few rusty short swords shoved up is a$$ by some orc centurions.

Other kind of dumb shit I used to do, when POP came out, my brother and I found a way to get to the very top of that tall castle in POK and we bound ourselves up there. Sometimes after being killed, Id return to that bind spot, forget to throw on lev and run off to go do a corpse recovery...doh.

Other times using the Mage lev rings, my bro and I would play levi bungee jumping. Basically we would run off the roof of the castle and try to click the levi ring before we went splat. To make it more fun, we would try to distract eachother while doing it. Still to this day on live, our main characters are still bound on the top of the tall castle in POK lol.

You know what, this just gave me a cool idea. Whever someone does something stupid or has something bad happen to them on EQ, go post about it on fmylife.com lol.

It was a nice evening. I had just gotten home from work and I logged into the everquest. My guild was raiding Solusek Ro's Tower. The guild was doing to rather long process of ghetto porting the un-flagged folks into Sol Ros chamber because a lot of my guild couldn't be bothered with silly things like flagging. Anyways I found myself in plane of fire where I had logged out after kiting tables (as a bard). I made my way over Sol Ro's tower and hit the beautiful beautiful song, Selo's Accelerating Chorus. Clicked into Sol Ro Tower, saw a few of his troops up and laughed as I ran right by them. As I expected, they took off after me and gathered quite a few friends on the way. I made it up to the port up, hit Fading Memories (beautiful) and told the raid leader I was there.

About 15 seconds later someone yelled train. I laughed at whatever idiot was about to get a ton of mobs coming down on his head. They were coming straight for our raid though! This couldn't be good. 20ish mobs against an unbuffed mostly afk raid force wasn't gonna be good. especially when our main tank had already ported up. then I saw it. I was oom and had been when I clicked FM but i didn't notice the "no mana" message because bards don't care about such things. Wiped the raid, set us back a half hour. /idiot off.

Back in the original days (99), me and a few friends had the very real belief that the angle you had a mob lined up in your viewport in first person view affected your hit rate.

My dumbest moment was as a level 5 ranger, jumping on a convo with a higher level char (15 or so, who was a god at the time) for a march from Qeynos to Freeport. Getting lost, losing the group, running into Neriak thinking it looked interesting, and losing my corpse forever. That was a delete and restart the char. :)

I was a wizard with levitation, and there was this gaping hole in Paineel, begging to be explored...

Hah! This!!!
The day the hole opened was the day I was moving from Western Canada to South florida and we were driving down (4 day drive). I wanted to have a quick look in the hole so I cast levitate on my 50 wizard and stepped off into the void. As I entered the hole, levitate was gone and I splattered at the bottom. I tried a few times to fix this issue (like casting right after loading into the zone, etc). So I died many times. I petitioned, explaining that I was moving and would not be able to get online for quite a while. The guide who responded would not help (I understand why). So, I lost my corpse.. (goodbye mana stone, guise, Box of AbuKar, etc). Yeah.. that... sucked.
A year later I was chatting with the server GM and mentioned to her what had happened. She said I should have petitioned again as they would have restored my corpse but too much time had passed since then.. (double-doh).

I just recently got the spell Cure Disease, a level 5 cleric spell. I'm 56.

My first character on Live was a mage, and I'd summon 20+ water/food because every time I camped for the night the next morning all of my food and water was gone. I thought my character was eating it all overnight.

I turned in 160 Red Wines to the dark elf in Neriak Library by clicking the stack, deleting the numbers and replacing it with 1 to get one out of the stack at a time. You can do the same thing by holding CTRL and clicking the stack. >:(

As a noob on Live I remember thinking that Clerics could cast regeneration spells, and I was sad that they'd always ignore my requests for it.

Also on Live, I thoroughly believed the myth that if you talk in /say in Plane of Sky too much, the crazy Halfling and his band of wild Pegasus would reign death upon you and your raid.

In Velious, for the majority of my time playing I was under the assumption that it was called "Siren's Ghetto" and not "Siren's Grotto."

Every time you ate a muffin manually by clicking on it there was a .002% chance you'd find money or a prize.

This one is true: If you go to the chess board in Butcherblock after 18+ sleepless/non-caffeinated hours, the woo-woop-woo-woosh sound is actually saying "Play-Ev-er-Quest" over and over.

I had the usual moments when Dr. Kevorkian channeled himself through me - clicked DE mask next to guards, tested out a PBAoE next to the guards, drowned because I was ducked and wtf why can't I swim up?

My biggest duh moment might have been the time I ran 7 zones including a boat ride to get to a zone my cleric was already bound in.

One time my guild was raiding the Hole and we were taking a break at the big swimming pool in the city. Our guild leader went AFK but put himself on autofollow to a paladin in case the raid moved. The paladin then decided to do a few laps of the pool....

wow, I have more dumb EQ moments than I can count. I remember fully looting my corpse at level 60 before receiving a rez three times in one night when I was grouped with some people from TR. Guess they made me nervous. I lost my level because of that and spent a while getting it back. I think that was my dumbest EQ day. I also once trained the spiroc guardian on my guild accidentally after our raid was over. Oh, and once in an AE group in the North wing of HS, I stupidly gave my key to someone before I teleported back to the entrance (after pulling a train of about 30 mobs), so when I came back I was locked out and a massive train of mobs slaughtered me in the zone-in room. Oh, also every time I've drowned in Kedge after a rez. I should probably stop now.

corpse in Kentucky...clever.

I recall once we raided sky and the raid leader warned us repeatedly not to talk to Sirran, he would kick anyone who did. Me and my buddy started conning guild newbies 'hey, give you 1000pp if you hail Sirran', etc. We finally got one guy to do that and he wiped half the raid. It was pretty dumb in retrospect as it took a lot for us to get there.

Stayed up exping for the better part of 40 hours straight before attending a raid, then falling asleep during the raid and dying. Then being killed 3 more times at bind point. Came back to 4 corpses with rez timer run out, all 40 hours of xp completely gone. This was ~2 weeks ago and the day I decided I'm never caring about xp again.

I just remembered my most retarded EQ moment.

Finished up a 20 or so hour long EQ bender (I was 14, it was summer time, I needed the platinum) and talking on the phone with my friend, I logged off of my 43 Dark Elf warrior and for some reason, deleted her at the character select screen.

I paused, then laughed.

A GM was able to restore it right away, with minimal (no) loss.

About 6 months into playing EQ back in early 2000, I remember having some noobie begging people in the zone for money. (something i despise) When he approached our group, one of my friends told him about the "Beg" command and how he can use it to get money from NPCs

didn't happen on P99, but I think my all-time embarassing EQ moment was getting CoH'd to our rivals raid in NToV. I didn't recognize the anchors name at all, and he wasn't guilded, so before I knew it i was hugging the wall preparing to engage Aaryonar with 40 people who couldn't have possibly disliked me anymore.

meanwhile my guild had our mage bot parked on the left side drake wall and were bypassing Aaryonar altogether. I missed the entire raid and had to get my corpse summoned in the morning....before school :X

edit: also due to this I missed a 4 AM ish Sleeper's repop where a Primal Spear rotted (i was a rogue on live also).

I remember when the Hole came out and on my Druid kept trying to get in from the top, sooo determined to do so -- I would float over with Levitate and zone in, didn't realize it would strip your levi, being that I'm not the brightest color in the box, I did that a few times until I realized I'd need to figure out a different way. When I finally managed to fall right into the pond and happy for my accomplishments, I was summoned and killed instantly. Had to get a Necro to summon about 6 or 7 corpses ofc the last one was the one with all my shit on it!

Oh! And beyond the world of Classic EQ, I do recall getting lost in the round room in Bastion of Thunder, but we could always blame the weed for this? I try to water down the fact that I'm just really that directionally retarded!

Remember when you could drop coin on the ground? A high level Druid did that to me as I was walking through Freeport I kept seeing copper coin on the ground (kinda like "Oh! A piece of candy...Oh! A piece of candy!) and picked each one up until it led me to the arena and then I was killed -_- wow I have a lot of stupid moments...

it wasn't the entire raid, just the couple of groups who didn't have the flag to get up to his room that were waiting for ghetto port. less than 15 people. Fortunately a cleric was AFK (and out of range) and lived and started ressing people immediately. It was kind of a best case scenario wipe.

Back in the original days (99), me and a few friends had the very real belief that the angle you had a mob lined up in your viewport in first person view affected your hit rate.

It does. You will deal an average of 15% higher dps from behind the 180 degree line due to lack of secondary mob defenses like dodge, parry, riposte, etc.

I think he means "I'll hit the mob for more if I angle my screen to the left so my weapon doesn't have to reach so far".

Atleast, that's what I used to believe! That, and that distance mattered (ie being closer made you hit for more / get hit for more, further back did less).

I was in an all rogue guild on Mithaniel Marr called Silens Dauthus. One day a few of us were messing around in the West Freeport arena and a wizard from one of the high end guilds invited us to a group. We joined up and before we realized what was happening he managed to bind a few of us in the middle of the arena. Many, dumb things from live ...
But the one that comes to mind first is one day not long ago I jumped in the water in Neriak on my DE Necro shortly after getting the DMF spell. I tabbed out to read a webpage, not realizing it had been a while since I'd cast DMF on myself. When I heard the sounds of drowning I thought to myself "Why is this dumbass drowning just to inspect me or whatever the hell he's doing?!"
I tab back in to find myself naked in EC Tunnel where I'm bound scratching my head for about 10 minutes before it dawned on me what I'd done, and who te real dumbass was ;P

As a wizard, accidentally hitting F1, not noticing, and repeatedly nuking myself until dead in a fight.

As a necro, AFK dying to lich, but as an IKS, it was something that you could usually get away with.

Getting drunk in kelethin and falling off loseing my corpse and re-rolling.

Did that on my first char on live! She lasted about 8 levels, total.

The rest of these are on my chanter on live...

- Walking into Befallen @ lvl 40ish thinking I was badass, falling through the well and dying.

- Charming an SG in Oasis @ lvl 50ish since that's what all the cool kids were doing, buffing up my pet, "so I could kill all the other SGs", having charm break almost immediately and getting beaten into a bloody pulp.

- Forgetting to re-cast illusion on zone and dying. (Cabilis, Felwithe, Qeynos...)

- One of the first to die on my own PoFear raid, and almost losing the shissar head because I crashed on zone during rez back.

I'm a klutz. What can I say?

My friend was playing with a mid level mage at the time, and I decided to play that char for a few minutes, to summon some bandaids and whatnot. I get on, peruse his spells, see he can summon weapons too. I decided they were awesome, summoned up a bunch of Swords of Runes (pre-nerf when NPC's couple proc) and handed them out to the Orcs and Skellies in W Freeport so they noobs would have some decent weapons...

3 dead guards, 15 dead noobs and an angry gm wiping the zone to reset the rampaging lvl 1 mobs later, I got his account temp banned...

This is amazing. And to think all I've ever done was forget to re-illusion zoning into Neriak 3rd gate!

Forgetting how rain AE spells work, sitting in the center of a group of mobs (in Chardok), casting it a couple times, banging my head on the table as I appear at my bind point realizing what I'd done.

On live, as a level 30ish dark elf enchanter, I was working on my JC in FV outpost using High Elf Illusion. I was there all day clicking away. Later a friend asked for help somewhere so I bound myself really quick and helped. A few days later I gated. I had bound myself right in front of the FV banker. Death after death later, trying to run away from the bankers/guards, I got a mage friend to CoH me to LOIO zoneline. It took a few tries timing my respawning with CoH going off. Finally got out of that death loop about two levels lighter.

One of my favorite dumb moments was on live on my necro. It was so long ago I have troubles recalling the exact zone but I'm almost certain it probably happened in surefall glade. Now I must not have had an expansion or something because when I tried to click to port into jaggedpine forest from surefall glade my character suddenly appeared in the sky at the top of zone limits, still in surefall glade. Now I was freaked out for a moment. Here I was up in the sky and falling fast and I watched as trees came rushing towards me and I panicked - I didn't know what to do, I had harmshield memmed and even to this day I don't know if it would have saved me because I instinctively hit my FD instead...

Worse part is, I first went for harmshield and paused in 'wtf why is this happening' terror and then went for FD instead.

ON P99:

Just yesterday, I saw Amelinda broadcast that the patch had introduced some issues with the boats, and to send her a tell requesting a TL if you were at a dock. I forgot this helpful information almost immediately, since I was (and planned to stay) in Kunark. (No, this isn't the really stupid part yet.) Later, Faydedar popped and as the big guilds were completely focused on Trakanon, my guild decided to move to TD and give it a shot. I dutifully sent Amelinda a tell, and got her afk message, which was something like "I'm afk making dinner now, so please petition if you need help with the boats!" We were 16 or 17 people at that time, and I will admit that it did briefly cross my mind that sending in all those petitions at once was probably overkill, but sending in one petition asking for a GM or guide to TL all of us together seemed kind of presumptuous, so I decided that it was probably best to each send in a petition when we reached the docks. (Yes, we're getting to the truly stupid part now.) About 60 seconds later Uthgaard popped into our guildchat to let us know that WHOEVER HAD THE BRIGHT IDEA TO SPAM THE GUIDES WITH 20 PETITIONS ALL FOR THE SAME THING AT ONCE had better think twice before they repeated such a stupid stunt. The truly idiotic part? At the time that he popped into our guild, I'm 99% sure that I had just set our MOTD to something like "LEZGO SQUISH FISH! Go to docks an' den send 'tition fer gets help cuz boats is BROKENDED!" I know that Uthgaard's temper is the stuff of legends, but you have to admit that he probably deserves a gold star for not suspending my account on the spot.

ON LIVE:

My first character was a wood elf. (For some reason I thought that Kelethin was cool, instead of seeing it for the maze/exercise in frustration/deathtrap that it was.) When I was level 3 or so, I was invited to my first group. The group leader very patiently explained where to find the button to push to join, and then how to speak in group, and a number of other things that I had never come across before, since EQ was the first online game I ever played. While giving me a tour of GFay, he picked up another true newbie who was just as clueless as I was. He asked us to follow him once again, but the other newbie didn't budge. He explained again how to follow him, and when the other player still didn't respond, my gratitude and admiration for our benevolent guide were crushed when he announced that "the guy is probably LD". I mean, just because he was having trouble figuring out how to move his character was no reason to say, right to his face no less, that the poor guy was probably learning disabled!!

Most of my nutties were on Live during the first couple of weeks after release.

Ran up over a hill to come face to face with Froon and Choon. I literally shit a diamond. On the CR I got the brilliant idea that I could sneak up behind them, you know, because they couldn't see me since they were standing there facing the other direction. Yeah, no. That was a re-roll.

I used to think that if you were standing on the spawn points, mobs wouldn't spawn. We also used to leave rooms in Blackburrow in an attempt to entice them to come back sooner. We never understood why that never worked because it made perfect sense to us at the time.

Splitpaw. The original one. I would go out there and solo the surface gnolls for hours, even days, collecting up rusty drops for cash (Gold pieces! Holy shit!) and literally walking back (heavily encumbered) to Qeynos because I thought the only place you could sell was in cities. Let's not stop there. I got the bright idea that I could probably run to Qeynos and back twice in the time it took me to walk once, so I figured I could hide half my bags in a tree and then come back and get them. I spent an hour finding a tree I could get up into and dropped half my bags (full of coveted rusty loot) on a pixelated limb. I was right about the run, and I thought I was really something for my ingenious idea. I got back and couldn't find my bags. I raged and raged thinking someone had stolen them. Petitioned and waited for hours, raging more.

That was when I found out from a guide about what they called "decay".

I think that was my first of a half a dozen rage quits.

All during classic on my first char
- Rolling a mage and putting all my points into str due to my friends advise (he was lvl 10 so obviously he knew his stuff)... I believe his words were "Mages are like battle wizards, with str it means they can do even more damage!"

- With the same friend we decided HHP sounds like a good place to go, we cut right through the middle of Kith at night time and proceeded to be feared and killed. We spent almost a whole week trying to find our corpses.

- Killing the AC and then camping after a long session, when I logged on the next day I notice I never looted the ring off him...

That's about all the big ones I can think of!

prabobly my brightest newbie dumb idea memory is following:

So I am on my first char ever level 5 warrior, running around Qeynos Hills, and having hard time fighting wolves and bears.
Suddenly, I see this large Rabid Grizzly on top of the hill.
"Aha!" - I say to myself- "Its a Rabbit grizzly! That means its a non predatory bear that only eats rabbits! Look, I will prove it to you! It will not attack me!"

And I swiftly run up the hill, never thinking twice about conning the creature...

SPLAT!
LOADING PLEASE WAIT...

This is how learned a new word - "rabid" :D

My very first death in EQ was drowning in the tiny Kaladim fountain on my newly-made level 1 dwarf because I couldn't figure out how to swim out of it. I seem to recall frantically pushing random keys and looking through the manual as my character's breath ran out.

Two of my RL friends did that very same thing.

On live when I first started before Kunark launched, I attacked Ember the fire beetle twice. Once before I knew he was a halfling's pet, and once shortly after when I forgot.

Instead of absconding to zone in in SSRA and inviting folks to join our raid which was about to jump into the Emperors room I decessed the only mage we had. Hopefully you don't remember that painful zone but it really was quite a bit of work to get all the way up to the emperors port in spot, esp as a monk who needs to drag a mage corpses from the zone.. I used to thank the Kelethin guards when they saved me from orcs. I thought there were real people behind them. Totally in roleplay style, too.

"Thank you, valiant Guardian Fayfear!! I really appreciate the rescue." /bow /thank /hug /cheer

/tell friendonlive Why don't the guards ever move or talk back to me?

A little embarrassing 'cause this happened to me just a couple of weeks ago, but oh well:

I made an Erudite Necro and leveled him up to 3 in a jiffy, picking up a ton of bone chips and my level 1 pet spell along the way. Once I hit 3 I figured it was time to venture out into Toxxulia Forest and see what it had in store for me - maybe there'd be some even conning MOBs out there to make my quick transition to level 4 even quicker. So I left the Paineel newbie area and zoned into Toxxulia, and what did I see when I got there? 2 Skeletons directly in front of me, parked right in the middle of the path. Now, this was the first evil character I'd ever made, and I was still getting used to the idea that Undead NPCs could sometimes be friendly. Sure, the Skelly guard in Paineel gave me a key for the elevator, but he was clearly labeled a guard! There was no way these generic Skeletons could be friendly too...

I selected one of the Skellies and immediately saw a red outline appear in my target box. Not bothering to read the contents of my chat window, I zoned right back into Paineel in a panic. 15 minutes later I zoned back out into Toxx to see if some higher level character had come along and killed the evil skellies - nope, they were still there. Damn! It wasn't 'til my 3rd trip out there that it occurred to me that they would never put a camp of level 7 KOS MOBs right outside the only entrance to a Newbie city with no guards nearby... I finally bothered to actually consider them, saw that they WERE, in fact, guards, and I immediately lost whatever faith I had left in my own intelligence.

When EQ first came out, I was exploring Butcherblock with my level 5 Half Elf bard. I climbed up to extreme edge of a steep cliff in a remote corner of the zone. I was stuck...I couldn't go back the way I came. The only way down was to go over the edge. I petitioned for help, because I thought I was going to die due to a bug. I waited for a considerable amount of time for a response. The guide patiently suggested that I try to go over the side. I felt like a fool when I saw that I was able to get down the cliff so easily.

On live... I may have accidentally sold a jade mace to a vendor because I thought it was a fine steel one. And it didn't appear on the vendor table either so I couldn't buy it back.

Waaaay back in classic live (I was like 13):

As a level ~12 half elf warrior, I decided to journey all the way to Tox Forest (since I was a badass level 12, doubted much could hurt me). This was about a 12 hour endeavor, since I died in highpass (and bound in freeport, had a long CR), then I died in North Karana and had to find my corpse, and then I finally made it to Qeynos. Of course, I didn't bother getting bound (since I didn't know anything about how binding worked), and I decided to take the boat over to Toxxulia.

Once in Tox, there was a roaming NPC enchanter that found me and charmed me. I dont think I ever ran into him again in my future playing, perhaps someone knows what level/where he is, but he kept me charmed for the better part of an hour. I was scared shitless that I would die in Tox and never find my corpse, much less have to make the run, AGAIN, from freeport all the way over to Tox. Eventually, after constant recharms, I was able to get away and zone in time. I still remember the anxiety of that day.

And I might be able to top it with my next story. You have to realize this was "back in the day", and I made it to level 17 or so on my half elf warrior. I had hardly even seen anyone around who was higher level than me, and I was getting some pretty sweet XP for the past 5 levels from killing the barbarian fisherman on the short in North Ro. Of course, I had no idea what it meant when my freeport militia faction went down every time. Nor did I realize what would happen when I died, and was bound at the freeport gates.

So, inevitably, I died at some derv camp or something and spawned at the freeport gates.. and died instantly.. confused, I waited for it to reload.. and died instantly, again and again. Finally I made a level 1 and petitioned, waited for GM help, and the guide that showed up was just terrible. He said he'd summon me to elsewhere in the zone when I logged in, so I logged in. I died instantly a few more times, finally was summoned away, only to have the agro'd guards come hunt me down elsewhere in the zone. This happened a few more times until he finally summoned me to another zone. Oh, and he didn't rez me at all. I bet I had 3 or 4 days played on my character to get to level 17, and I dropped all the way down to 12 again. Worst day in EQ ever. :(

I think nalkin already outed me on one (five) of my dumb EQ moments but here's another.

When I first started on P99 (completely new to EQ) I was running through Nektulos on my DE mage and I wanted to say /wave and say hi to what I thought was another player. Then he killed me :( When I went back to get my corpse, I /shouted asking why he killed me when someone proceeded to tell me he was a bard.

I was like, "What does that matter?!? :("
