View Full Version : Necro: Gearing and Leveling

I never played a necro outside of occasionally boxing guildmates chars on raids on live and I'm wondering if anyone can give me a few tips on gearing, leveling, and the interaction between the two. Are there any must have/buy/camp items that would be a valuable time or money investment? The only one I can think of at the moment is a circlet which would increase mobility and survivability.
Currently pushing lvl 41 and would like to know if I should be doing anything other than molesting mass amounts of yetis. Would be nice if I could kill two birds with one stone, even if the exp isn't quite as good.

Honestly dont even worry about gear until your 46+ and yet 50+ and getting into the planes, leveling as a necro really wont be any different with better gear. Gear with necros comes with time. If you really want to get gear/farm just go down to lower guk and start there, kill every undead frog and you might be able to hit a couple nameds (sage, savant, etc) but just focus on EXP, lower guk is a good place to start though, great exp with a chance at nameds.

All you need to win as a Necro is: Jboots

Roger that. I've got about 4k to my name so I'll probably drop some cash on a jboots MQ when I have enough. On a related note if any guilds would like to add a necro I've played MMOs at a top level (eq, wow) and I play nightly after 7 EST until I fall asleep.

get some 5 ac 55hp rings, get some jboots, get a stein. Best items for the money. You can prob solo ac at 34 easy enough

Sup Space,
I camped the Jboots with my Nec at 34. Took me a total of...wait for it....3 hours to get the AC to spawn in Sro. Was I lucky? Perhaps, but it's not hard.
I believe HP is a must so the rings are a good suggestion (I have 2). I went to SolB for the first time and found some good xp and won the roll for a mithril runed bracer. Check out that zone =)

Agreed, Necros can be played well pretty much naked. Gear will come in time.

Jboots and CoS are the two must-haves that are relatively easy to buy / camp.

Forgive the ignorance bit CoS = Circlet of Shadows? Why would it be a must? I understand it saves mana on casting and it has resists, but must? Love to hear your feedback

Damn thing has a 0.1 casting time. Along with FD you'd have to be a moron to be able to die while surrounded by non-undead.

Has this already been nerfed? And, if not, when will it be nerfed to the 5.0 second cast time?

Oh, and get the shadowbound gloves and boots. Both decent pieces for under 500p each.

Go erudite or human, get flayed skin even. Sometimes its cheaper hell people even give it away for free and its not bad stat wise.
Get a sacrificial dagger for melee until you hit 12 its a good weapon. After 12 you shouldn't be meleeing anything anymore.

Regarding the CoS, I waited until I could camp it myself and now I can't believe I lived so long without one. You can literally fd on top of a mob spawn point, stand up and click CoS before anything agros. You basically have permanent invs until you drop it to summon a pet. It saves a spell slot, saves mana and is also handy for breaking charm. It really is indispensable.

Get to 44 (Spectres are good if you want cash, Bloodgills are good if you want to do it quickly) then head to OoT and camp the AC there. Pull the other cyclops on the island or drag a seafury over between repops of the PH, I'd recommend dropping 100p on a 10shot SoW pot if you don't have any. Xp, money, jboots. The trifecta.
CoS is great because you never have to worry about invis dropping in a random spot. You can run around an area you're KoS in and just click-invis whenever it starts to wear. Makes doing corpse recoveries in Chardok super easy as long as no dogs are up.
However, don't feel rushed in having to go out and get one now. I've posted the patch notes for the CoS nerf many times. It is 6 months after Velious release, you have well over a year to get your hands on one.

Can cast while running, if social aggro works the same way as on live it's insanely useful for pulling mobs long distances through other social mobs without aggro and can be used after a fd before mobs aggro. Incredibly handy item that is very useful. Innate camo on live was amazing for survivability and training people :P
Thanks for the info. I'll get a couple more levels and see what I can do about jboots and a circlet. Thanks for the gear lists too, will give me a good jumping off point.

Could probably trio it around that level but not solo. Could handle single pulls with a 40 + 41 necro but nothing more than that.

You'll want to be a bit closer to 50 if you want to camp it easily. There's a lot of caster mobs in close proximity, including healers through walls, and the bodyguard himself is a shadowknight who will HT the shit out of you or your pet. It seems to go for like 3-4k in EC and you might just be better off farming the money. It's the rare drop of a rare named mob, and while it can spawn in more than one spot, it tends to take about 5-6 hours on average to camp a CoS. It's also a bullshit camp because it's fairly contested and is split up weirdly so that multiple rooms with 2-3 mobs in each count as separate camps that people can claim, and it can spawn in any one of them. You risk sitting there and having someone show up, claim part of the camp, and having your chance of getting a bodyguard significantly reduced.

At 44 with some care you can probably hold the bodyguard spawn near the ramp up to the Chief, at 41 it would be super risky and I doubt your pet would have the damage output/tanking power to deal with it. At 44 you'll have pact & Ignite bones (time it to start casting when the mob is at 43-44% so it lands, interrupts their heal cast, and hopefully also puts it into flee mode).
Often times the chief is camped and people are usually willing to let you take a body guard camp, and will probably also have the camps cleared or help you do an initial clearing. Having mobs chain healing your mob or any adds will get you killed swiftly.

Cheers everyone, good info. As to having 3-4k, not really an option. I haven't camped plat in 10 lvls so I'm low. I honestly prefer camping as it gives me a chance to explore a new zone and adds risk. i'll wait till I'm higher level to give it a go.
Cheers.
