View Full Version : Which class do you think would be the most fun Solo Self Found?

I saw another thread where people were discussing the most difficult or challenging solo self found character grind. Most people said Rogue by far. But that got me thinking ... which class would be considered the most fun to do a solo self found run?

What do you all think?

If you were going to do a solo self found character, which class would you go with? And why?

Probably a druid, they're pretty fun to play and don't need a ton of gear. The stuff you can camp as you level would make a pretty good difference.

I think Ranger would be tough but rewarding. Solo self found ranger who tracks, and has all the diverse spells/equipment to hunt for would be fun

Ranger or sk probably. Both get some good QoL abilities and can both fear kite to avoid massive amounts of downtime. Most Casters can level naked after a certain point so I don’t think that would be as fun.

Maybe magician to finally get some use out of all those Summon: Weapon spells
Or a monk for a less grindy way to both be able to solo decently and have a use for item/armor upgrades without being gimped without them. Crafting your own armor is pretty fun.

probably monk or shadowknight because of FD

Enchanter.

Monk.

I'm kind of surprised I'm the first person to say necro!

But necro.

I get enc/monk too. Both good answers. I don't get SK. If you want to fear kite, play a necro.

Necro definitely the least gear dependent class in the game. Even enchanters need to gear for charisma/hp with the current meta.

This is a subjective thread so ymmv but Necros don't need gear, I would think a solo self found build would actually want to really notice and get excited about those gear upgrades. You can go iksar necro and pretty much level with naked/cloth until 60 like it's nothing. A melee is going to appreciate that sweet new weapon/bp much more than a necro would.

Iksar SK's and shamans make for especially good self-found solo runs because of the class quest armors that you can mostly do around the levels they're still good, or at least you could back when more of the server was lower lvl and the stuff you need was being regularly killed. Not sure what it's like now. Shaman has the ability to camp some good gear. SK is going to have trouble finding a good weapon at a reasonable time unfortunately, but if you're grouping and tanking it doesn't matter too much, just use your khukri.

Iksar SK is my favorite untwinked melee to run.

Yeah I can totally see that actually. Iksar necros have the skullcap quest too but that item kinda sucks for the work it takes.

As someone who has tried true SSF (no player trading allowed), melees and tanks are not fun, since you can't buy a good cheap weapon. Even if you are able to get banded as a tank or melee, your damage output would be horrible vs a noob who just joins P99 and runs to EC and gets handed a free weapon.

I would say for true, 100% SSF a shaman would probably be the best choice since all you need is a Gatorsmash Maul and Banded armor (shaman can craft banded armor the best - ogres can earn mad coin from level 1-5 to help fund this) to get to level 50 and then you can farm really good gear to go higher levels. Druid would be harder to farm good WIS gear, but possible (some WIS drops are only level 25-30 ish).

Necros close second

You can't group in SSF, hence the word "solo." But yea, you nailed it when you said it's hard finding a good weapon. As SSF it means you can't accept items from other players which means you can't sell or buy from others. You can only use items you loot, craft, or buy from vendors.

ah my bad, misinterpreted what was meant by solo

Yea, SK would be an exercise in masochism in that case

You first have to eliminate all classes that can solo with zero gear. Cause what fun is it to self find all this gear that is mostly meaningless. Oh boy I got more mana, but I don't get hit anyhow, so yay that makes it more fun.... NOT. Then I think for the majority of folks Warrior and Rogue is not going to be a fun SSF character. So that leaves Paladin, Shadow Knight, Ranger, Monk as your choices. All equally fun in solo self found, I can't rate one over the other.

I personally think a Ranger would make a decent solo-self found toon. With panic animal they have the ability to solo grind most of the way to 60, with a bit more DPS than say an SK in the leveling phase (who can fear kite anything)

My second pick would be an SK.

I’m of the agreement that a solo self found is most fun on a class that isn’t a natural solo class, but as someone else said, fun is subjective. I just feel like, as someone else mentioned, being a class that could solo theoretically to 60 naked, there just isn’t as much drive to camp items along the way that you really need to keep soloing. Melee classes really have to camp items so their gear can keep up with the grind, and that’s part of the fun of a solo self found toon.

Enchanter may be the only class that can realistically complete their spell book...solo and self found that is.

Gustoo

Ranger is fine in velious era with panic animal and snare and swarm caller you can solo to 60 basically in great divide and honestly being a solo ranger deep in velious is a bad ass and lonely experience. I killed many cougars and mammoths in my time in era avoiding PKs on a gimp Ranger. I didn’t believe in the swarm caller though so I didn’t have that, would have helped a lot.

The three hybrids are close to equal with sk on top because of feign.

But yeah you guys do non solo self found and actually play the game right. Finding solo spots for non solo classes is like cool but it’s a very limited way to play the game and unless your doing it to avoid pvp on a popular pvp server it’s pretty deeply pointless

Agree with this. I think the melee hybrids are ideal for SSF challenges. Shadowknight, Ranger and Paladin.

There are single spawn quick spawning mobs for every level range throughout the entire world. It's really not that limiting, if anything it let's you see a side of the game you would otherwise miss.

The bard call seems pretty good to me. So many different play styles, you can swarm or you can face tank. You can fear kite or charm. You have tons of armor and weapon choices as well as complete mobility with spell casting. Sounds like a fun SSF character.

It really would be the best. I think the other classes might be more capable of getting better gear, but those classes really don’t need gear all that much.

Druid, mage or necro but I'd say druid for the mobility (although DaP are never far away).

For a self funded char, you may be interested joining Aug Land Syne although I believe they have extra rules in place you may not like. Best is to contact them, ALS is a bunch of good people.

Im doing a SSF run on red with a troll DK. I'm in my mid 30s right now. I also did one with shaman but i'm stuck at lvl 19 (Hate it, DoTs are expensive. mana regen is a real pain pre canni)

It's got the added difficulty of being an evil race. If I would do another run, it would be with an Iksar monk or necro).

I've detailed some notes on where I went to leveling and gear. Its here below. There are quite some good options to get decent weapons. If I would do a pally run I would get the deepwater harpoon.

1-10 Starting Areas.
*Gear Alert: Gather rusty weapons, buy sharpening stones. Use Tarnished Weapons and raise all weapon skills. Buy Bandages and level-up first aid.

Innothule
1-10 Assorted Tadpole, Mushroom Froglok between Guk and Grobb, last levels Froglok Foragers & Kobold hunters North of the zone.
Do basic turn ins with Tadpole skin/froglok meat and skeleton chips for extra money.

*Buy full set of Leather Armor + A regular weapon (2HS ideally Halberd, 1HS ideally Long Sword or Scimitar)
*If you are a large race, Get a Woven Mantle (Magic 2ac shoulder armor piece) from Frogloks in Innothule. To be able to Slam magic beings.
*Buy Combine Weapons Smith Tv`ysa in South Ro sells to Trolls and other evil races, Otherwise Gypsy camp in Oasis of Marr or Lavastorm mtn.

10-15 EC Deathfist Centurion roamers (3 spots in EC) + Roaming Lions, Beetles.
Deathfist slashed belts for WFreeport turn in for more exp + Militia Faction (with wolf form) or Grobb turn in for lower exp, but money and Grobb faction
Alt 13-15 Kithicor forest Recfek Shralok/Large spiders (gather 8 shralok bags)
Alt 15-18 Najena entrance: Skeletons dropping bone chips and bronze weapons, 2 Ogre Guard dropping Large Ringmail armor pieces. Stop before elementals (Earth ones require Magic Weapon)
Alt 12-15 EC/WC/ Nektulos Wisps Turn in Greater Lightstone Smith Tv`ysa in South Ro for fast plat
15-20 Oasis of Marr - Caiman and crocs (try to avoid deepwater caiman/crocs as they hit harder and got more HP)
Alt 17-20 Orc Alley
Alt 17-20 Dervish Cutthroat WC (Solo/Duo pulls) or SRO (roamers)
Alt 15-20 Befallen (Get keys and Barbed plate from Ogre SK)
Cutthroat rings for turn in in South Ro or WC (Militia Faction), must use wolf form if . Keep 2 rings (1AC, 2DEX)

*Gear alert:

100-150 plat Raise Blacksmith for Banded Armor
21-22 Hukluk's Helm quest (Requires killing 2 trolls in Neriak (Lvl 17-19)
20-23 Upper Guk Gaz Squire (Neck: Undead Collar and Ranged: Fork). Depending on level, might need to split spawns by using HT or pulling to ZL as you might need to kill them 2/3 at a time (sometimes a warrior + knight)
22-23 Befallen Troll SK and Dark Elf SK *Safer to drop down the hole from Female Human SK camp but with last key in hand prior. Mobs on 22 min resparn timer. Must be able to kill 1 or maybe 2 theurgists with pets to get to the Troll SK Spawn. (Legs: Barbed legplate, 2HS: Bone Bladed Claymore - better for Troll and DK due to AGI malus) Troll SK for the sword is only lvl 15 but you need to be able to beat 1 or 2 theurgist with pet on the way there.
23-28 Highpass South camp Hagnis Shralok can be single pulled if he spawns on top on the ridge. (2HS: Shiny Brass Halberd)
23-27 Highpass Gnolls north Vexven Mucktail (Cracked Dark wood Shield) Grenix Mucktail (1HS Polished Granite Tomahawk)

20-26 Kithicor Forest Shralok camp. All named other than Grand Chief Shralok 20-21. Level 22 is a good power boost due to new spells that are mostly buffs and pet. DoT/Snare permits better fear kite
I got to apprehensive with Highpass guards and was able to turn in over 100 orc scalps (was still threatening to Freeport Militia afterwards)
Alt 23-27 Highpass Gnolls north. (Faction to Dubious with HK guards, eases travels West) Turn in scalp for EXP and faction with HK Guards and Militia (eases travel to OOT)
Alt 25-30 Gorge / Beholder's Maze. 2 lower level evil eye lords.
Alt 25-28 East Karanas Crag Spiders. Good silk drops.

26-28 Najena 5 Tentacle terror spawns and Moosh. *Small gear alert: 1HS Tentacle whip drop off the tentacle terrors. They are nice for pets and aren't LORE.
28-30 Najena 3 Skeletons + Giant Black Widows between respawns (Central area)
Alt 28-30 East Commonlands - Guard Tolus and Reskin

*Gear alert
30 Sporali Defender and Moldmaster (1HS: Sporali Defender Blade)
30-35 a Pickclaw Destroyer, Veteran, Battlelord Paluk, Lord Pickclaw (2HS Blackened Alloy Bastard Sword and Long Sword).
35-37 a Pickclaw Foeseeker, Battlelord Paluk, Lord Pickclaw Blackened Alloy Armor + Coif with extra stats

I've been doing Kunark-only Self-found for a while now. The classes that are gear dependent are the most fun by far. You have so many targets and quests and upgrades along the way to break up the exp grind and every single upgrade feels damn good.

Honorable mention to Bard.

That was a solid leveling guide above. Only caveats I would add is that some of these spots (such as crag spiders) will be giving you high greens by the level range indicated. Which makes sense if you're doing a solo melee run, but just adjust slightly if you're following it as a caster.

This game SSF would possibly be the most miserable experience in all of life itself

So I'm going to vote necro or mage since you won't find anything useful for 52 levels minimum

Any hybrid post when the xp nerf was removed. Nothing fun about that.

Caster + melee on non-raid content is just a hoot. Most them have stuff to offer the raid scene but as a self found would be my suggestion.

I'm currently going a slightly different direction, though. Since i'm an Ogre, i can make cultural, so I've been hitting money camps. I'm currently level 13 at Sisters in LFay, saving up so i can raise my BSing and get a full set of Banded. A nice side effect is at 130 BS skill, i can also make a weapon which is magic and pretty good for the level I'll be acquiring it. Other than that, a lot of what you wrote is now on my radar. Thanks

To the overall question of the thread, SSF is supposed to be a challenge. To that end, melee are more fun than non-melee because of the reasons others have stated. In addition to the SK, I have a necro, but i've decided to only level by tap-tanking. To further the challenge, I went non-iksar so I dont have the regen and AC bonuses. I'm HOPING that makes it so I need to find gear.

I fully believe if you're doing this challenge, sometimes an extra challenge is needed. For example, If i was going to make a monk, which is a very strong melee for the challenge, I would limit myself to only fists.

Monk could be fun or necro. Paladin LoH would Also be cluthch for close calls but be a pita non twinked.
