Hi! I’m searching for research papers suggesting detrimental psychological effects gaming has.

Anyone have suggestions of some interesting recent ones?

Yea the only detrimental effect would be like an addiction/withdrawal scenario which can happen in other non-substance activities like watching pr0n or gambling

All other effects seem they would be positive to me in terms of brain activity

Sorry not basing on any research tho

Playing video games generally involves being sedentary. Even if it stimulates your brain development, your brain is useless if you die from a pulmonary embolism from a 16 hr minecraft sesh or whatever.

Therefor, my thesis is that only video games that involve physical movement are actually good for your brain. This includes titles such as: World class track meet for the NES powerpad and that's pretty much it.

You ever pick up a game some boomer was playing as a kid, never having played it, and just dominate them?

My wife was being groomed for the Ivy League so she had virtually no exposure to games or TV growing up. It doesn't matter what we play, even shit like scrabble, she *never* wins, she just can't pick it up as quickly as I can or understand whatever 'meta' underlies the game. And she's generally more intelligent than I am.

There's definitely something about playing games from a young age that enhances some forms of abstract reasoning, you can tell when someone has 'gamer brain'.

Exhibit A: (tho!)

With LV machines and a Tool Forge you are able to craft a respectable TiC Crossbow, though you still shouldn't shoot every mob you come across. One of the traits that Infernal mobs can have is called Vengeance, which deals equal damage to you as you dealt to that infernal mob. It can no longer reflect back more damage than a mob has health remaining (if this is how you learned Return to Sender deals 10K damage, congratulations. Also ouch...), but you can still easily kill yourself shooting at the wrong mob. Especially if you don't have a lot of extra hearts from eating because you rushed the Healing Axe. Finally, be especially careful of spiders that have a red X on their back. These are Witch Spiders, and they fully reflect back any ranged damage dealt to them. OP TiC crossbows can deal in excess of 200+ damage with the right configurations, so barring an insane amount of extra hearts and armor (and Runic Shielding for good measure) you're not surviving a hit like that reflected back in your face.

Small note: Chisel Concrete gives a bigger speed bonus than GT concrete, although certain types of GT concrete have the property where mobs cannot spawn on them. The latter mention this property on the tooltip. Also Dark Concrete has the same appearance as the Concrete Plates that can be used to hide GT pipes and cables.

It's worth noting that the slime blocks (or slime balls/the glue it produces) can substitute most if not all Sticky Resin in recipes, so absolutely grab a slime sapling if you can. Alternatively craft an Electric Tree Tap to farm Sticky Resin more easily without having to constantly craft fragile and annoying regular tree taps, or invest in IC2 crops and try to get Stickreed. In any case I do recommend getting a better source of rubber pulp going, since you will be using it until IV most likely. In early LV it's also worth shooting for a Chemical Reactor and Fluid Solidifier, to make rubber sheets much more efficiently.

Something to note is that a lot of these early recipes have more efficient alternatives in LV machines. It's obviously worth switching over to those when possible, just remember to check and keep using them. It can be difficult to remember after so long using the regular recipes.

There are now Crop Managers that are able to work very well with IC2 crops, but Forestry multi-farms still have their niches for farming Forestry tree fruits or the more esoteric things like a Peat Bog.

You can avoid using one steam turbine per machine if you use cables to send power from one turbine to multiple machines. The downside of this is that lossless LV cables aren't available until after the EBF, and if the machines (and cable loss) consume more power than the turbine can generate everything will go to hell. Generally you'd pair a limited amount of steam turbines with a battery buffer and thicker cables to compensate, but making good batteries requires a few more machines.

I've recently learned that you can avoid solar boilers calcifying by feeding them distilled water instead of regular water. The problem is that there's very few ways to create distilled water this early on, and long story short it's better to use fully calcified solar boilers than it is to set up a system to create distilled water to feed into your boilers.

For your first set of LV machines I would absolutely recommend the Wiremill first, and the Bending Machine second. After that it's mostly a question of what you think has higher priority, but I would suggest upgrading your steam machines to LV last. Instead upgrade them to their (much cheaper) High Pressure variants, which are as fast as LV machines and consume the same amount of steam - actually less, since HP steam machines don't have to content with the 85% fuel efficiency of LV steam turbines. HP steam machines can also process some MV tier recipes, but none that they can process are at all relevant. When you're ready to start removing your steam pipes and either replace them with power cables or a proper fuel line it's time to retire your old HP steam machines and craft LV/MV replacements for them.

For the record: HP steam machines run 2x faster, making them as fast as LV machines, but consume 2x the steam/s. They don't overclock inefficiently like most electrical single block machines do, and also don't catch fire and explode when exposed to rain like electrical machines do...which really makes you wonder whether technology is going forwards or backwards 🙃. Just make sure your pipes are able to handle the increased steam throughput HP steam machines need, which is another argument for making an Assembling Machine to open up the Twilight - Lead Dust opens up Potin, which is a very cheap fluid pipe material that's over 2x the capacity (and throughput) of bronze fluid pipes.

You can obtain Lithium to make Lithium batteries in LV, although it's a bit more involved than simply electrolysing clay dust in MV - find Lepidolite and Spudomene in a Salt vein. Ore Wash the Crushed Lepidolite for a chance at lithium dust (this is where a small setup to produce distilled water is great, as it'll make this recipe faster and cheaper), and centrifuge Purified Pile of Spudomene dust for the same. NEI will show you how to process your ores, though keep in mind that macerating does not yield byproducts until HV (use a forge hammer before than, as it's much cheaper and faster).

A note on cells: There's two different versions of basic cells, regular cells and universal cells. Regular cells can only a specific amount of fluid (144mb, or a full ingot, for things that have an ingot form, 1000mb otherwise) and thus will always stack, but hot liquids will burn you if you don't hold the hot cells in your pizza glove-d hands. Universal cells can hold any amount of fluid up to 1000mb and won't burn you, but won't stack unless they hold the same amount of the same fluid. In addition there are various tiers of large cells, which are effectively upgraded universal cells to hold up to 131072000mb at the highest tier. Learn to love these cells and use them wisely, because early game you're going to be using them a fair bit for fluid storage and transport.

The steam grinder multiblock is very worth going for, even if it means enduring GT++'s endless adoration for all things alloy. In terms of performance the steam grinder consumes a comparable amount of steam to steam macerators (during testing it consumed 1650 steam per ore, which is slightly more than a steam machine's 1600), but works significantly faster. Somewhere in the neighbourhood of 5x faster than a HP steam macerator. This is dependant on the specific recipe, but macerating ores is by far the most common thing you'll be using steam grinders for. Do note that the steam grinder's special output buses do not auto-output like proper output hatches, so you will need an external hopper to output items automatically. Yes I know the output buses use a hopper in the recipe but still need an external hopper anyway, that's just part of the GT charm.

Also, you can wallshare steam grinders, like the BBFs, to save on some materials. Not really crucial in the age of bronze and brick machine casings, but a habit that's worth picking up early.

The chance to get a sapling from a silverwood tree, because they can contain nodes, is abysmal. There is a quest to buy silverwood and greatwood saplings in the coin chapter if you prefer to skip that particular bit of RNG (though of course you will need silverwood logs in Thaumcraft itself).

Spawners in GTNH are nigh-indestructible, in theory to make things more challenging but in practice it's just a giant waste of time. There are faster ways to dispose or spawners, but most of them are gated behind magic. The rest are too expensive for early LV, so honestly just break the chest and leave the spawner behind. It's not worth breaking.

The Twilight is a great place to look for fruit trees, especially the swamp and firey swamp for tropical fruit trees. Of course accessing the swamp requires doing twilight boss progression, so come prepared.

You will reach a point where keeping coke ovens fed on wood is so much easier than coal that it's worth switching over to charcoal for the BBFs. Just consider whether you might need another pair of BBFs to compensate for the slower speed, especially if you've got LV machines to make crafting them that much cheaper and easier.

There are IC2 crops for brown and red mushrooms, but you have to breed for them. Alternative you can explore the Twilight Forest and hope to run into a mushroom tower structure/biome(?). It has no loot in it, but if you want a couple 'shrooms...

This is ur brain on gaming. I mean... would u profferrr a law degree??!! )))) LALW

I get a little disappointed when in my work parents confess to me that their kid around the age of 10 had complete unrestricted access to porn for a long time before being discovered

It's hard to prove it because anyone who would do a study on it is a liberal gamer nerd, or an authoritarian luddite.

But either, something is making our entertainment more and more violent every year, or our entertainment is making us want it to get more and more violent every year.

And schools are having the same problem, so something is correlated IMO.
