Not technically a screenshot... but close enough. Some dipshit nodded out on a bunch of painkillers and crossed the interstate and hit me head-on.

I don't know why the thumbnail doesnt work. But if you click "View All" the album comes up.

I'm fine. I didn't even bother going to the hospital. I didn't brace myself, and I had just rowed a half marathon so my body was relaxed. No injuries to speak of, except maybe a cracked rib.

People are stupid but this is just unreal.

Glad you're alive, also glad you didn't have a passenger with you as I don't know if they'd have been as fortunate as you were. How many people working on p99 have nearly been killed since it launched? Jeez.

The payout on your car should be the actual cash value and its a totally separate payout from the medical portion of your claim. You need to get that rib checked out though, serious internal dmg could happen with a broken rib.I'm glad you are alive Uth.

any hematoma you might have could grow a Thrombus that might kill you . if you are a smoker or in any other kind a risk patient , you might go and let a doctor check you up . also you might get a trauma even weeks after the accident . go -> doctor . :)

I'm betting 20 crying petitions that Uth is rethinking the going to see the doctor part. You don't feel anything the first day, it's the next day that kicks you in the ass and knocks you upside your head.

I've had parts of my body I had no idea I had sore from a car wreck. This looks like it wasn't just a slight bump either! Not many people walk away from wrecks like this on both feet.

Even if you think you're fine, you should still go to the doctor. His insurance will cover it 100% and you'll get more in the settlement. I got a concussion from being rear ended and got $750. A cracked rib should be worth even more. Most importantly, you want to make sure that nothing is wrong.

Glad you're ok!

Your car looks alot like mine did after a similar crash. Similar injuries too, although I couldn't walk away. No air bag = hit head on steering wheel (or something) and was knocked out.

But as a tip from someone who has been there before: take it easy on your recovery. Your body just went through a beating, give it time to recover before going full-bore again. It may take a month or more before you feel normal again.

Glad you're safe and sound!

I rowed 5k yesterday as a little test to see how I was doing, and after that I was convinced I should get checked out. Xrays came back fine. Nothing looked broken.

I appreciate the kind words. I definitely feel fortunate that it happened how it did. If it had been someone else with a passenger, or a less sturdy person who didn't know not to brace for the impact, it could have turned out much worse.

The unsettling part is that there really wasn't any time to do anything about it. Still being alive is pure luck, being completely uninjured is good fortune I can't even wrap my mind around. Not to sound trite, but all I can say is make sure you don't put off living the life you want for yourself.

BTW... Some of those cans were in a bag in my trunk. I was going to recycle them. My toolbox and spare tire knocked the rear seats forward, and they weren't the kind designed for trunk access.

You were convinced *after* rowing... Right :p

Glad you're okay! That was a nasty crash. Can you tell us about the situation in which it happened? Like... who was moving in what direction, street scene setup?

I always try to learn from other's experiences besides my own.

I was headed westbound, he was headed eastbound. He came at about a 45 degree angle from the road, the road wasn't turning. So he probably slumped over and his hand brought the wheel over with it. The only thing you'll learn from it is how little you can do. On the interstate you don't even have time to estimate a point of impact. All you can do is relax and hope for the best. Never, ever brace for any impact. It doesn't matter if you fell off of a building or are about to get mowed down by a VW Golf. Roll if you can, relax if you can't. Swerving is just likely to put you in an equally bad situation if not worse.

Prevention is the biggest thing. Know what your vehicle can handle and what it can't. Drive it in a way that minimizes the weaknesses. The jeep I'm driving right now makes me nervous as shit because its maneuverability is zero. I've flipped it by just slamming on my brakes before, so I stay in the middle lane where I don't have to worry about idiots who cant merge onto the interstate, I can keep a clear view of everything around me, and I keep a safe distance from anyone that I see driving like a retard. They might only hit the people in front of you, but guess where you'll be in less than 2 seconds. Right up their tailpipe - with no lube. My driving habits have changed drastically. Instead of trying for the fastest possible route, I go for the safest possible route and on an hour drive it honestly only adds like 5 minutes that i'd just waste when I get home anyway.

Dying in a wreck wouldn't be the worst way to go. It's quick and painless, you don't hurt until afterward. The important thing that I didn't do was check to see if I was bleeding. You don't have a lot of time to get a shirt or belt tied down over an artery if you are.

The first thing I did once I realized I could get out of the car on my own was walk up to the first car behind me and make sure they were ok. I didn't even start limping for about 15 minutes. My ribs didn't hurt until the next day.

I was talking to a friend of mine today about a wreck he was in. He had his knee broken backward and walked on it. Didn't realize what had happened until he looked down and saw it, and then passed out.

As an ex insurance adjuster, if i had a case like this, i would be treating you
very kindly, heh.
i dont recommend legal rep as they really take a good part of any settlement but if the insurer isnt behaving, make sure you get the treatment you need,
so to say.
PTSD may be a consideration here reading your new driving habits.
Hope you are on the mend

Uthgaard

Yeah, I prepared settlements for a few accidents when I worked for an attorney years ago. I don't think it will be worth it to involve one, and I can probably handle it all myself. I try to be reasonable with people as long as they're reasonable with me, but he's not learning very quickly.

I really do appreciate all of the advice. Having some direction really helps.

insurance people are the fucking devil man.. they get paid to try to not pay people..

I've had several really strongly worded conversations with geico and other big name companies when i was 100% not at fault and they didnt wanna do shit like cover a rental until the other company settles and shit....

all those damn commercials acting like they are out to help people but they are just trying to fix their bottom line.

Ow. There is indeed little to be done in this :(

Never, ever brace for any impact. Wouldn't that somewhat depend on the situation? Like... If someone is gonna hit you from behind, if I saw it in time, I'd at least try to get my head back to the neckguard/head cushion for support...

Prevention is the biggest thing.

I'll sign that. I have a couple of precautions, including some of those you mentioned, and then also a self-teaching of patience: Every now and then, when I want to get off the highway, I don't overtake "just that one more car" but instead get on the right lane and slow down early. Just to teach myself that the few extra meters aren't worth speeding / doing last second lane changes.

And then I always expect the worst possible behaviour from other drivers / even pedestrians, and drive in a way that would reduce the impact if they really behave accordingly.

Thanks for sharing!
