df general, discussion? anyone play? this is my current file, an attempt at making the ultimate fantasy text file generator. medium world, short history 125 years. 129 x 129 map grid, sparse metals world.
focus is on library/tavern gameplay and hoping random number generator does its job. took a peak at legends mode before starting to make sure enough dragons,titans and crazy shit was still alive to count as "age of myth". i am using dfhack commands but mostly to reduce lag and skip to the part that's actually interesting to me the "fantasy aquarium" part

50 dwarf hard cap limit set in .ini so should promote visitors and citizenship petitions.
tested so far and had 65 "citizens" with 15 living in rooms assigned to the tavern,
so of the 50 dorf slots we have 3 combat squads of 10 each and the other 20 dwarfs being assigned workers/library/tavern jobs

pretty basic setup, we have a stream, three roads that meet at the entrance, a long hallway. parts of it before the tunnel turns have fortifications carved into them so dwarfs on the other side of the wall can jack idiots up thurgadin style. further up is 4 draw bridges, when retracted make what i have decided to call "what the fuck is this David Bowie's Labyrinth?" the only means of entering or that matter leaving Shotquills. im going to have to actually sit down and unfuck it to make all 4 drawbridges up/down combinations actually matter but its mostly for looks. it will also be the only means of accessing the underground cavern layers so all the visiting adventurers will auto path through it or attempt to anyway before dying of thirst

for the tavern i mined out and floored over a small section of the underground cavern layer. walls and floor are clear/green glass blocks, the entry way to the left is a artifact wooden door and gem windows, the pink things in the room are actually trunks of underground trees growing up trough the bar they and the ceiling goes up quite a ways and the cavern floor below the bar is 6 z-axis levels down so a kinda kelethin vibe but indoors like a snowglobe... the ceiling isn't secure either its continues up connecting to other parts of the cavern so flying monsters could attack people at some point

outside the glass enclosure is the monster aquarium / battle arena, currently we have 4 goblins a giant and a minotaur caged up. room is glass and the hallway leading to the Library

just kinda just went for it. the room on the left side is the dungeon master noble's room im not sure if he actually does much yet with the intrigue system, it has a basement floor also with a area for goblins to live and i got a room full of Guinea pigs rofl. in df they are called "Cavy Boars" and i saw cavy boar on the animal list and was like alright a boar that likes caves whatever lets order 10 on embark so...

we now have a tentative agreement with the minotaur to work and live in the labyrinth.

this shit is kinda sketchy.. i didn't even know you could tame minotaurs without hacking. and now i can't assign him to a chain or something like i was planning. he wants a room and access to the dinning room n shit, i didn't even notice until half the fort started doing bucket brigades to keep this fucker fed and supplied water while he was sitting in the cage stockpile LITERALLY CRYING. this fucking minotaur is acting like hes people and i won't stand for it.

man... everything for going great for about 30 seconds he was even on his way to the Duchess to petition for citizenship or to "reside" as a mercenary monster hunter only thing that "attend meeting" could of been unless the "meeting" was a meeting with this bard to fuck him up... this dip shit comes strolling out of the dinning room while our new Minotaur friend was walking towards to throne room and well, that predator/prey behavior kicked in and Purog "The fuck you lookin at?" Licdungda had to choke a bitch...

I'm no good at this game. I'll admit that but I do have pretty funny memory of playing RP mode drunk one night and getting into like a wrestling match of sorts with hand to hand and thinking what the fuuuuuck?...

Dwarf fortress is hard. The best forts have a metagame tho. Like farming mermaids and exporting goods made from them.

The death of the Fort is at least as important as its foundation and peak. The game itself is unpredictable enough your Fort will eventually die. Very few forts get to a point where the game engine stalls. It does happen tho.

So best to let the fort fall. Then reclaim it later )

here's the fort entrance/kill room... i haven't built a 2nd retractable bridge at the bottom part yet, but basically gonna wait until the bulk of the goblin invaders walk 2/3rds across then raise both bridges at either end trapping them. on the right there is 4 solid gold 2x10 bridges currently raised, concealing behind them 8 Ballistas that once manned by dwarfs the 4 gold bridges can be lowered and the goblin invaders killed.

this is just the local area the entire world is much bigger but i won't interact with any of it from this fort. my fort is the red circle

the blue color tiles directly below my fort aren't water but actually "Good biome" areas so its a dense enchanted forest that can spawn unicorns, fairies n' shit.


and hopefully this is the one, THE FILE, THE WORLD. the plan is to populate it with like 5 forts or so... fully built then retire them so they auto play, then play the actual adventure mode game that's a rogue like and use the forts as bases of operation

i think they live forever by default idk if that requires eating or not i gotta learn how to mess with the creature raw files to change stuff like that, currently the world always gets overrun with goblins if you run it for hundreds of years apparently saw a reddit post asking what people change the default values to on everything and changing goblins is something i was reading about yesterday. "what happened to the first fort?" first fort i still have saved but it's like a 24x24 world or whatever and this new one is 256x256 squares with a fuck ton more civilizations and megabeasts i ran the simulation for 150 years instead of 100 or 5 years like the previous 2 forts, 150 years still isn't long you can run it for 1250 years i think but it takes days or something, but this is all about the "age of myth" part and won't turn into the age of legends till enough dragons and titans n shit die

15 z-axis drop on either side, most things get fucked up falling 1-2 z levels. imma dig it straight to the magma sea though to be sure. i plan to fight solid metal titans and dragons on that bridge

I made a hot desert world once with Glassworks and dug through a sandy aquifer once. Almost 10 years ago.

I am very bad at hacking so mostly use defaults. On a potato computer. It used to take hours to grind history. I bet my modem comp would be crazy good at it.

yeah I've always wanted to do a desert or tundra fort. i tried a evil biome but the second you butcher like a animal to make a meal it turns into a zombie so i gave up pretty quickly

and yeah music was Girl Talk mostly those 3 albums own

yeah its a mess, i'm super hopeful though.. it was finally coming together feature wise for the shit i care about before he started working on the steam release. next update to taverns/library/ off map battles stuff and it will be more than i already hoped for at that point

That's some sexy ass organic design. My favorite build was an Ironforge-esque ring.

Basically a large circle underground divided into four quarters, with an outer ring, a moat, an inner ring, walls with fortifications to fire on outer ring, and an inner citadel in the center. Each quarter separated by gates and each ring by drawbridges and gates. Outer ring was shops and industries, inner ring was several levels of homes / dining halls, and the center had a palace complex with buildings and offices for nobility, a dungeon with jail cells and an arena, library, etc. The one entrance to the outside terminated at a large above-ground castle that housed my military.

Was a glorious game until it suffered FPS death while trying to engineer a lava-pump upgrade for my smelters, bringing them closer to the city. Hopefully they've improved that for the steam release.
