View Full Version : Noob questions about MAG before I play as one.

I know that is suboptimal, but I wanna play anyway. So here is some questions

1 - IS easier to do the epic quest in Blue or Green?

2 - Is easier to get focus items in blue or green?

3 - HOw to deal with enemies with high FIRE and high MAG resist?

4 - Does the pet magical shields bypass resistances?

** Similar spells in other games, depends. Fireshield in BG2 bypass, I nnwn2, it doesn't bypass.

5 - What about the average time to kill in different levels?

For eg, takes about a minute to kill an "blue" forest giant as an lv 31 necromancer. How much time would take to do the same as an magician? And in high levels? Is truth that takes eternities to kill lv 55+ mobs as an mag?

6 - IS the Sword of Runes proc working in everything in BLUE??

https://wiki.project1999.com/Sword_of_Runes

This item.; I found information about it in green but not in blue

7 - IS the rain spells bugged?

8 - IS better to speicialize in conjuration?

1 - If you really want to do an epic quest I'd highly recommend NOT playing a magician.
2 - Probably about the same, if you wanted to just buy the pieces probably cheaper on blue.
3 - fight something else, or use fire pet with its unresistable DS.
4 - ^^^
5 - if using a fire pet about the same as your 31 nec example I'd guess, slower later of course as HP scales into the devils anus.
6 - procs on summoned mobs only as it should.
7 - no longer bugged i hear but it has a high resist chance.
8 - probably, specially if you solo exclusively and chain summon pets.

8 - IS better to speicialize in conjuration?

1. I'm not sure, I wanna say Green, but I don't know what the Hate situation is like on Blue right now.

2. I would say this is the same, they are easy to get on both servers. Do the quests for the minor ones and join a raiding guild to get the water/air staves.

3. Let them die to damage shield, chain summon pets, this works best outdoors but can be done indoors creatively.

4. The fire DS is unresistible so yes.

5. Mages generally kill mobs faster then necromancers because there's no dots or fear kiting. I think a mage levels to 55 a bit faster then necro, but 55+ necros are way faster mage. 55 + sucks for sure, but it doesn't take eternities to kill the mobs, just eternities to level.

6. Sword of Runes only procs on summoned mobs on both servers.

7. Rain spells work fine are excellent choices in the right circumstances.

8. Generally yes, but it depends on how you're going to level your character, what you plan on doing later. If you use the pet reclaim method to level then absolutely go conjuration there would never be a reason to do evocation. If you plan on nuking/using DS for 51% of the mob's hitpoints, or for doing mostly group content even at 60 then evocation would make sense. Your biggest cost spells are all conjuration though, CoTH, mod rods, pets etc.

Afid's mage guide on the wiki is really good for low levels, I used that one on my first mage and it was a blast following what he lays out.

Human. Why? Gnoll Fangs in Qeynos. Most people suggest races with higher INT.

Gnome mage is the only choice, honestly.

Wallhacks and being small in general is god tier.

Seems like the only choice unless you want to carry out shrink potions to do coth wall stuff.

I know high elves get a nice Tunare item. But not sure of any other racial advantages.

Yeah really hard to beat gnome for perma shrink. Stats wise it just doesn't matter any race does fine.

Shrink pots work just fine if you're willing to pay for fashion. Gnomes are fugly, for a coth bot always choose gnome. For an actual character, choose what you like, all the races are similar. New players don't need to min max.

Fixed that for you

I used to always recommend Qeynos area for speedy leveling, but this was the before time, the long ago :(

between gnoll fangs, rabid pelts, and finally bandit sashes you could get fairly quickly into the 20's on a fresh toon with at least 1k plat banked.

Nowadays rabid wolves and bears have placeholders and quest exp for all the above have been nerfed into oblivion. RIP Qeynos, you were too beautiful for this world.

.

Even after the nerf in Qeynos quests, I found extremely easier to get into 20s in Qeynos than getting into lv 12 in Freeport as an human necromancer and I'm playing now as an MAG in blue. Reached lv 6, almost 7 in about 4 hours of play and only suffered a bit to get to lv 4 and my first pet.

And BTW, I chosed Karana as an deity. I know that is suboptimal to be human mage worshiping Karana, but he remembers me of Adanos in Gothic series. I just wish that I had cold based offensive spells...

Qeynos was the one part of EVERQUEST that really felt it got the time and detail the game, by name, deserved. It feels like the devs put EVERYTHING into getting the first 8 levels there right and then rushed out all the other areas/levels.

I’d love an Everquest where everything was as thought through as that.

I personally go Dark Elf as I like having hide as a marginal ability, not super important on a mage but it's nice for AFKing. You are also "neutral evil" depending on your diety and can get into a surprising number of places without being KOS (not as good an evil diety human / gnome / erudite though).

Even after the Gnoll Fang quest nerf, it's still decent.

I want to say 300 fangs will level you to around 16, instead of 20 like it used to.

It's still an enjoyable way to get to 16. Seeing each fang icon when you loot something is like a splash of sweetness and euphoria. I can picture it now. Close to a cocaine rush.

Yep. I tested a bit in 4 diferent starting cities. Qeynos due the fang quest is by far the best starting city. In TLP the quest is far more nerfed than in p99 but in p99, is possible to get into lv 20 in a day, if you get lucky and an high level player to buff you... I'm not joking. An high level(50+) shaman buffing your elemental + his damage shield is probably enough to kill some lv 14 mobs there while the PC is at lv 4.

^ that's assuming there's no one else in Blackburrow camping the gnolls lol

but yeah Qeynos is OP starting zone. I beg for a port to SFG on all my new good chars and run there like a baby turtle running towards the ocean

If you're twinked, the best start zone is Warrens.

Highest ZEM and free hole key if you stick it out til you're clearing the throne room area around level 22-24.

Hope this helps.

Warrens

Don't forget to bind close by and have some form of crowd control otherwise your nickname is gonna be finger-cuffs.

Hope this helps.

This is a good point but also don't forget the level cap was level 20 originally, and when you look at the commonlands area through that lens it's much much better. It's one of the reasons level ranges are weird in certain parts of the game, think Najena.

Theres no reason to go anywhere but warrens until near 25, place is just dumb exp with the bonus and the bat cave in back is dope area to pull to. While you are there you get hole faction. Move to MM after that get ros faction and hit near 40. faction +exp=way to go.

Would someone mind explaining what that faction is good for and why you would want it?

Its convenient if you want to farm the guards or hunt in the hole.

Bank city right next to druid and wiz portal. City has only one faction so easy to stay friendly to everyone there. Easier access to hole. Vendors for dumping trash after hole runs. No faction hits on guards so easy money in zone.
