View Full Version : What starting stats for Shaman in duo with Warrior?

My friend and I are starting the game soon and will be duoing as Barbarian shaman and warrior. He's an old EQ vet, and I'm totally new to the game. I've read up on initial stat allocations, and it seems like people are torn between WIS and STA: http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27581. Then there's CHA...

Questions:
-does WIS have any effect other than boosting your MP pool size? I.e. will it make my spells stronger? I don't care too much about tradeskills.
-if the answer is no, then isn't STA clearly better? My friend says that he recalls (10 years ago) there being a lot more WIS-buffing items.
-Any other considerations? Like what his starting stats should be since we always play together and he'll be tanking.

Thanks!

(And thanks for good posts like this: https://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14274)

Wisdom just adds to your mana pool (and makes your spellcasting skills increase faster, but this is completely unimportant) and doesn't make your spells stronger or your mana regen faster or anything. Mana pool size generally isn't that crucial, especially to a shaman, but if you're starting from scratch with no gear at all, it might be nice to have. It's one of those cases where you can go wisdom or you can go stamina and neither will be a bad choice, but wisdom will help you more in the beginning and stamina isn't worth anything until later. There are a lot of wisdom items, but shamans generally don't focus on them, and since shaman races typically have low base wisdom, you're not likely to max it anytime soon if you put no points in it. Also, if you'er always gonna duo with a warrior, you might not need the extra health so much. Really just do whatever you prefer, they're both fine choices that won't hinder or help you to any particularly noticeable degree.

it doesn't make a big difference at all. as a shaman you have the best stat buffs in the game and your mana pool is endless come lvl 60 with torpor/canni that you can dump your points into cha and it wouldnt matter.

For the love of God don't put a single point in CHA.

I think at 60 shaman get just under 3hp per sta, so putting 20 points into it will net you 60hp at most.

Putting 20 points into WIS will get you 240 mana at level 60 [(20/5)*60].

Not having 60 hp or 240 mana is not a game-breaker. You can't go wrong with either, or some mix of the two. You will probably end up carrying around a hp/ac set, a wisdom set, and a resist set anyway.

alot of people tend to dump wisdom, not only does it have an effect on your mana pool, it has an effect on the chances of spells being "resisted"
being a generally larger race. as all shamans are. you don't have the most base wis to start with, as far as gear goes. you can always max out wisdom eventually with items, then start switching off to +HP +STA +AC items or w/e works in the end. but for now. being a first run toon. that extra mana will most certainly make the world of difference in difficult fights.
with a shammy/warrior duo, you're obv going to spend more time dpsing from afar with your ass on the ground for the most part. imho,

That's not true...Resist rates are entirely unaffected by wisdom.

But put as many as possible into wisdom. Once that stat is maxed, you can get hp/sta/mana items.

No....sounds like an old wives' tale from Live.

It's the same as any other place on the internet. There is always a ton of misinformation, a good amount of truthful or semi-truthful information, and methods for those who care enough to find out what's real and what's not - over time.

Wisdom also affects most skills your shaman will be using. Meditation, Channeling, Alchemy, etc. all go up faster with a higher Wisdom. Once these are capped, Wisdom does little for you, but it will ease the journey.

people parsed the hell out of charisma on shammies and found it did nothing.

Main effects of charisma are for charming, secondly for things like mezz or lull.

For everyone else, it helps you buy/sell in a small way.

Splitting your wis/sta on the shaman I think would be best. 10/15 (you can decide for yourself which you want more).

For the warrior, as a barb you should just load all 25 into Dex. You'll be ahead in Str/Stam over any other non-large race and on par for agility with any of them as well.

Thank you everyone for your responses! I logged in and made my character, put in 15 wis/10 sta because as barbarian I have extra sta anyways. Seems like the lesson to learn is not too worry too much about it!

Now I just gotta wait until I get approved to play on the same IP as my roommate. Boo.

I would put at max 10 points into wisdom. The rest should probably be put in stamina. You should max out wisdom with not much effort, so don't waste the points.
