Unless you're doing a lot of solo work I'd invest more in your armor items. HP/AC/STA type stuff.

Your main role is to hold aggro and take/absorb damage not dish it out. I'd prefer a SK/pally with good armor and an average weapon than channeling all their plat into a good wep but be in rags/bronze :) (as a cleric)

Everyone is DPS. If your tank is killing the target faster, then you are taking less damage in the end. Weapon upgrade makes WAY more difference than an armor piece upgrade. Trying to upgrade all armor pieces costs far more money and leaves you with shitty DPS still, which is crippling in many situations.

OP does need a decent weapon I agree, but you are just plain silly if you think a naked tank with a great weapon isn't going to be dying fairly often. You can't DPS when you are dead. You can get a full set of crusty armor for like 1K, so I am not sure where you are getting this idea that a full set of decent armor is highly expensive. Add in HP rings (+55) and Orc Fang earrings and you are at 2k spent total.

To OP's question, Argent Defender and Ebon Mace would be your best bet for cheap weapons on Blue with good ratios. Reaver is obviously very nice too, but it's more expensive than both of those weapons combined and harder to sell back when you are done with it.

If a group's tank takes 20% less damage because of better armor, but the MOB takes 25% longer to kill because the tank is doing a pathetic amount of damage, you're improving nothing. You took the same amount of damage in the end, while killing slower, which means less progress. That melee character is also crippling themselves for solo/duo by having a shit weapon.

Clerics are not the only healers for groups, C-heal is not always going to be there, so higher HP doesn't necessarily do anything at all. And even with a Cleric in the group, 100 extra HP is a drop in the bucket for a character who already has high HP + Cleric buffs. AC is more important. But most importantly, getting a very good weapon is the first thing a melee class should be doing to level. It's a far more efficient expenditure of money and killing things is what earns exp.

The guy isn't going to be in "rags" regardless, plate armor commonly drops from MOBs anyway as you level up. That should have been acquired by now if he's Level 42 and there are some other free upgrades in places like KC. Getting a great weapon is something you won't find dropping in a normal leveling group though, making it even more essential as the first thing to save a couple thousand plat for.
