Is it me, or is the UI not at all what it was back in 1999?
it's the best that can be done to replicate it. The original client can't be used anymore.

Also, most people didn't press F10 (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3473114&postcount=95), so they didn't know about the "alternate UI" (which is what the Green UI is based on).
Now, that being said, some intrepid modders have re-created the stone UI (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=404059), so if you're particularly hardcore/masochistic you can load that up for the non-F10 UI (or something closer to it at least).

Many things in P99 aren't original, or close. But still lot more enjoyable than playing Live TLP server.

make a 4:3 viewport for better view and also more classic.

I run a standard aspect ratio screen, don't like living room ratios.

It's not perfection but it is pretty darn good.
Can't lie, I still go around eqclassic.org every year to see if they've made any progress on the classic client. I am only reminded of this because you bring up the UI. :)
I remember a time when it was p99 vs eqclassic which would use that old client, but alas I think eqclassic is vaporware.

But yeah the UI being different was due to widescreen monitors, 16:9 aspect ratio aka the living room ratio, becoming standard. Everquest was designed during the era on the left side of this photo, for a standard aspect ratio (4:3/5:4 CRT Monitor) while P99 runs on hardware from the right side of the photo.
Windows Vista, Widescreen TVs/Monitors, Smart Phones, Vista/360 Standards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Games_for_Windows), STEAM taking over. It was the end of the desktop era but it still lives on in RGB-lit racer chair dreams.

edit: Some might not get the photo.
Left: The founders of Looking Glass Studio back in the 90s, one of them is talking with Chuck Yeager. They were from the MIT-Hacker
ethos of "just making cool stuff" but were not a financially minded group.
Right: Kevin Levin, founder of 2k studios. He was a member of Looking Glass during their dying days. He expresses his love of being there, getting to experience making something just because you thought it was cool. But he was also nervous there and afraid of where his career was going with a company that didn't pay so much attention to the dollars.
He founded the Bioshock series (2K Studios), which was the supposed continuance of the System Shock series (Looking Glass). The series remains the poster-boy of the downgrade experienced during the shift over to the Vista/360 standards being imposed on Windows Desktop Computers. Everything has a price as they say.

p99 isnt classic llol it's like 'luclin light' + a bunch of rules lawyering that never existed on classic because gms didnt really get invovled and when they ddid they just suspye veryone for 7 days

well the lawyering rules is more because people have been playing the game for 20+ years and have memorized every pixel and timer so disputes arise more frequently then back in the day. that and content is limited to velious so no new content for our avatars to explore and forget about our past pixel hoggishness

be careful those ultrawides out there can be addicting when properly supported by the game

Will not be an issue for me. https://hardforum.com/threads/got-my-westinghouse-lvm-37w3-37-1080p-display-today.1088497/ , already did a big screen when it was something novel for a desktop.
Wider screens will not help my interest when the console-developed games today barely warrant a look.

P99 is definitely not classic. And velious is a terrible expansion.

The fact that people dont pug in that guardians armor zone would indicate magna is right about velious being a terrible expansion.

Skyshrine should be full of crawling raids of level 40-55 players working on their guardian / sentry armour and rare no drops imo.

The classic stone UI was so good.
I loved the 'face camera' when you inspected your equipped gear

Did EQ allow zooming camera out in 3rd person when it first came out or no?
Jibartik
10-16-2022, 08:52 PM
No, I used to do 3rd person camera a lot but by tapping the change camera key on your keyboard. But a few of the camera angles were not in the original, the 3rd person one that mouse wheels out wasn't, and the like, periscope one or something, one of those.

Yeah! After I read this I was like "there's basically only 2 different cameras that I use anyways.."

When I first started to screw around with the F function keys and found out I could go full screen and third person, EQ really became the game for me. I hadn't seen anything like that before. Fast forward a couple decades and I would totally love going back to the original look and UI of EQ in 1999 but I can't live without mouse wheel camera zooming. I've tried it recently and it sucks. I've been spoiled by it.

That moment when you hit F10 for the first time and got your mind blown. 23 years later I'm still playing it.

A lot of my friends want to play P99 with me and they never played EverQuest back in the day, but I don't want them to play until a new server launches, because I want them to get a better feel for how the game when it was teeming with masses, and most zones were super packed.
But even still, it'll never be the same. I remember Qeynos Hills, and Qeynos being super populated people, players just randomly adventuring in every nook and cranny, and you really never see that anymore, and may never see something that replicated in any future MMOs either due to the internet and how easy it is to share and access information.
I guess one solution for future MMOs would be to have every server a little bit different. Like the servers could have all of the same zones and cities, but have them randomly generated so that each one is a little bit different and thus, harder to navigate or know for sure where the rare spawns / camps are.

That's how technology moves forward, and the game is no exception. But I can still pick up hints of the initial launch.

Ya it’s sad no one just adventuring around really at all in any form of eq anymore like 1999-2003
Used to just find people figuring stuff out being level 8 but fully decked out in nice looking bronze armor for bartering with people and whatever. Different world and different perspective. It lives in our hearts. A level locked new server will be a decent replica as people will have a reason to go through all the level appropriate quests because there is nothing better to do other than level an alt which itself will keep the zones busy and interesting.
Here’s to hoping, but there won’t be people just role playing near the bard stage in Qeynos like the old days with 50 people wandering past them wondering if they’re an NPC or a player
