This place is beautiful. Can’t believe it took me so long to come visit. I highly recommend checking it out
I’m buying property here for sure. I’d post picks but I’m 57 years of age and don’t know how to do that

Yeah. All of earth should be like that. Except medieval levels of technology. And it would be straight up GG best IRL mmo ever.
Y did I pick this modern era server.

Alaska would probably be bad with medieval technology
Also an otter attacked one of my dogs in the shallow part of a river. Dog is fine but damn, this place is wild

I think the whole world was still pretty wild back in mideval times. I guess europe was pretty much exterminated of all life besides humans.

It's minecraft except the otters r zombie pigmen.
Anyway the most dangerous animal in Alaska is probably 99% sure the moose. This coming from someone who spent like a year in an Alaskan ER.

Just saying winters up here would be very bad before modern heating and snowplows / planes / transportation. Maybe Iceland and Norway would be analogous, but Fairbanks gets to -50 in winter

Igloos! Innuit! Lots of whale fat. Dried shit. U can burn that for warmth.
It's not a death sentence rly. Starvation is the main concern. That's why salmon is a big deal.

Maybe it's cuz I grew up in UT as a kid. Cold doesn't super scare me.
Maybe it should.
The biggest one is do not overdress because sweat kills. Of course you are not going to die of hypothermia being overdressed and sweating waiting for the bus in Toronto. But in a remote setting, this is important.
The Inuit caribou parka is an amazing bit of technology even though it is low tech. Caribou hairs on the inside of the parka and the hide to the outside. Caribou hairs are hollow and your body heats the air up and it is retained. A good hood with a full ruff that makes rime frost instead of structural ice.
More modern Inuit parkas were typically anorak (pullover style) because you eliminate the cold spot of the zipper. They are two layer construction. Wool duffel inner (felted wool) with a cotton or poly outer. The poly outer is windproof and sheds enough snow because it is not wet snow. Goretex and other waterproof breathables are useless at subzero temps because they lose the ability to push moisture to the outer layer.
This was something I learned early on when I first went to the Arctic. In fact, throughout my time there I would always get comments like aren't you cold wearing that?
Of course I never wore huge, heavy Canada Goose Parkas or expedition boots. Unless out on the land. Never wore a Canada Goose ever.
For years I wore a 200 weight fleece and a synthetic insulated parka and changed my closest to skin layers for the temp. Never wore windpants or insulated pants except while out on the land. And I walked everywhere.
You think it should be easy putting on enough clothes to be warm, right?
But there is a difference when you are standing still and moving.
You really want to be just on the edge of feeling a chill was what elders told me.

So tldr essentially everything modern we do to stay warm will kill u in cold weather.
Also fish caught in cold water keep u warmer because of the type of fat. And adding fat to that to reach like 8000 calories. Genetics play a role too.
I was the person who just didn't feel the cold in my platoon. The heat used to wreck me tho.

Ya sweating will kill you. Also the water kills quite a few folk. I’m only 38 but I’ve lost more friends to the water than my fingers can count.
Alaska is amazing, lived in the south east, south central and interior area. Fairbanks at -50 is really fuckin cold. -20 not bad tho, 0 in winter is shorts and a T-shirt weather.

Alaska is terribly boring. TERRIBLY BORING! We live in one of the largest cities in the state, but this, of course, still cannot be compared to the same New York. The "new places" ended on the second day when I arrived here in 2008. And I've been here for 14 years. I exaggerate, of course, but I probably, however, am not adapted for such places. It was very difficult for me to adapt to the cold. I remember how long I got used to the cold, my tall radiator always worked at full capacity, if you are experiencing difficulties with the cold now, then look at this site for a tall radiator (https://www.radiatoroutlet.co.uk/designer-radiators/vertical-radiators). I feel like another year at most and I will leave here. I'm 24 years old, I want something new all the time!

How bad is the grizzlybear lime and rock joint disease?
Could you homestead in Alaska if you're a vegetarian? I'm thinking probably not? I'd have to start eating fish again I think to make it work...and ugggh that sounds gross and terrible! But I cannot imagine you'd be able to grow much of a garden there but maybe with a greenhouse it's not so bad?

Whats the rain like? Some places have big rain with big fat drops, some places have small rain with itty bitty teeny drops, and some places have medium rain with little regular drops.
Im curious what alaska has because that is about as exciting as my life is.

Everyone here grows rhubarb and squash and carrots and shit
Idk, if I post up for retirement I’ll have some sheep and hunt moose and bear and caribou. I’m definitely no vegan and I love tracking and bow hunting. Been doing this shit since I was a boy back in Iran
Seems likely you’d need a green house. The summer sunlight definitely makes farming productive (temporarily) in some areas. I think most of the farmers are in the MatSu valley north of anchorage

So houston rains more BIGLY. Houston rains 5 inches at a time and you get to watch all of the Louisiana people come save us in their swamp boats
Anchorage has been raining for three straight weeks but rarely half an inch a day. Mostly off and on sprinkling, but a few days have rained more (like an inch). I’ve been consistently hiking this entire time and I’m not exactly young with great knees or a mountaineer type, so the trails aren’t saturated if that gives you any indication

I liked savage alpine trail in Denali National park. Seeing mt McKinley, even from a distance, is breathtaking. Plus we went at 0700 and there was no one there. Awesome piece of nature
My wife liked Grace ridge that you have to take a boat to from Homer. That was really cool as well but the first two miles are 8 foot tall ferns and mosquitoes so dense they’re on your eyelids. I thought I was in Jurassic park. Once we cleared that (9 mile hike), it was stunning.
Neither of those was close to anchorage. In the anchorage area, I’d say eagle and symphony lakes

Theyre those flares you see off the sun, explosions like 100 times the size of the earth or like even bigger I guess. Pretty crazy to imagine but sometimes they explode in a way that make the shockwave hit the earth, and it creates cool visual effects in the sky.
I like to keep updated on them because Im hoping one knocks down the power grid and sends us back to the stone age.

Bring some of that to NJ. We are in a drought here. Barely any rain at all this summer. Could actually go down as the driest summer on record.
Not that I'm complaining about sunshine day after day after day lol but we need rain.

There are tons of isolated, removed from society types (by choice)
The guy I’m going moose hunting with takes his son along every year. They’re originally from Idaho and the son flies up, but the dad moved here a decade ago because Idaho was “getting too crowded.” I feel like there’s a lot more people like him than preppers but still a relatively high number of preppers hah
